1 St. Joseph s Catholic Primary School Bristol Road Portishead North Somerset BS20 6QB Headteacher: Mrs E Jackson stjosephs.pri@n-somerset.gov.uk Website: Friday October 23rd 2015 Dear Parents/Carers, Wow, we have done it, the end of a busy first term. Every-one is back from camp and what a great time they all had (even with the injuries and the river dunking)! Watch this space for more information after half term regarding a Year 3 and 4 overnight camp. The children have packed in a whole term of learning and there have been some fantastic sporting events all of which we should be very proud. Lateness May I remind all parents that the children should be ready to line up and go into class at 8.20am. If they come in after that time they are late and must be entered into the late book in the office. The late book is regularly checked by North Somerset Education Authority and if there are persistent late offenders they will be contacted to establish the reasons for persistent lateness. Occasionally events do occur that are out of our hands and contrive to make us late; however it is the regularity that will be checked. PTFA The PTFA have been busy with various activities: Brewery trip, Book Fair and Quiz Night to name but a few. The next event will be a wine tasting evening on Thursday 19 th November and a drop-in babysitting morning on Saturday 12 th December, so you can Christmas shop, child free. More details to follow. Please support the PTFA; they do so much for our children. The PTFA of St Joseph s are also part of the giving machine. If you shop on-line you can go to you will be able to join and then find the PTFA St Joseph s school, Portishead and then you will be able to shop on-line with most high street retailers. The giving machine will make donations to the PTFA as you shop. New Parents If your child is starting school in September 2016 we welcome you all to another school open afternoon on Friday 6 th of November. You will be able to have a tour around the school and get to meet other parents and children. Together we love, together we hope, together we learn.
2 The Harvest Festival Thank you for all your contributions. Mrs Maliphant took everything over to the Portishead/ Clevedon food bank and they were thrilled with our collection. They will be sending us a certificate of thanks in the near future. ST JOSEPH S BEAN BAG THROW AND NETBALL COMPETITION The sports crew with the help of year 6 organised a bean bag throw competition for KS1 and a netball shoot for KS2 children. All children worked in their house group to compete for points. The year 6 children organised and scored the event which contributed to their prefect badges. Well done to all the children involved! The winning houses were: KS1 Winners: St Andrew and KS2 Winners: St David! (Portishead event) Year 6 Cross Country The children went to Gordano to take part in the Portishead cross country. Year 5 and 6 have been working with Chris Millard to develop their technique and pace. All children ran very well. Out of all the Portishead schools we had four children in the top 6. Bertie came 3 rd, Paige came 3 rd, Ben came 4 th and Abigail came 6 th. These children will be presented with medals. BGS cross country Well done to all those children in Years 3, 4 and 5 that took part. The Year 5 girls came first out of 14 schools and the boys in year 5 came second. Thank you to Mr Donavon for organising the event.
3 Reception phonics and reading meeting 4 th November 8.30pm I would encourage the Reception parents to try and attend the above meeting. We will be looking at learning to read strategies that we use in school, introducing you how to encourage reading at home and our new e.books that you can access at home. Reading is a partnership between teachers, parents, carers and children. If we are all using the same methods then our children will become fluent and able readers from an early age. Year 1 phonics talk Friday 6 th November 8.30am Come along to this talk and find out all about strategies your child will be using to learn their phonics this year. You will find out more about the Phonics test in June and how you can best prepare your child. There will be information about our new e books that you will be able to access at home. Handwriting Competition September 2015 list of winners First 2 nd 3rd 1 Marnie Pola Noah Allen 2 Beth Harry Alex 3 Gabriella Caitlin Dawid 4 Benjamin Godfrey Anna Granger Daniel Parker 5 Scarlett Thompson Miriam Kiero- Watson Jacob Venables 6 Lucia Bureo Cristina Sarta Paige Cox We are looking to see all letters formed correctly. Sometimes children try to form o clockwise, and m and n starting from the bottom, instead of from the top. All children are encouraged to join their writing as soon as they are ready. By the start of Year 4, everyone should be joining correctly. Come and see the winners/ work, displayed in the ICT suite. Correct handwriting is important; it is easy to make it look as if a word is misspelled if the handwriting isn t formed correctly. Children will lose marks in SATS/GCSE tests if words appear to be spelled incorrectly. Book Fayre We would like to say a big thank you to all those of you who supported our latest Book Fayre, and to the PTFA for organising this. We have made over 450 commission, which we will be spending on non-fiction books for our library. Daily Ten Minute Read We are launching this initiative in the first week back in November. All children from the youngest to Year 6 will be expected to read aloud to an adult at home every day for a minimum of ten minutes. Reading is such a key skill for life. Older children sometimes appear to be good at reading, but don t always understand much of the text. One way to encourage understanding is to get them to read aloud, pausing appropriately at punctuation. You will be asked to record this every day in your child s new Reading Log. (This is not the same as the Contact Books.) Simply find the day, sign to say you have heard your child, and write 10. We lead busy lives, but you could always hear a child read whilst waiting to pick up another child from a sports
4 activity/waiting for the pasta to cook / waiting for the dentist etc. Reading logs will be inspected weekly by teachers. We are looking for 5 signatures a week. Thank you for your support with this vital area of your child s learning. eschools - School Website and Learning Platform Today our new school website has been switched over from our previous provider. The address you need to use is Going home tonight are letters containing login information for you to access the secure areas of the website and view information about your child and his/her class. Initially we need to ensure parents can access the site and have a username and password. WE ARE AWARE THAT SOME OF THE INFORMATION YOU WILL BE ABLE TO VIEW IS NOT CURRENTLY COMPLETELY ACCURATE AS WE ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF TRANSFERRING SOME OF THE DATA, PARTICULARLY ATTENDANCE DATA WHICH IS STORED ON A DIFFERENT SYSTEM. THE REASON WE ARE ASKING PARENTS TO LOG ON IS TO ENSURE THAT ALL PARENTS ARE ABLE TO LOGIN AND ACCESS THE SECURE AREA OF THE SITE. WE WILL ADVISE YOU AS SOON AS THE SECURE AREA OF THE SITE IS FULLY FUNTIONAL. The login details have been generated automatically by the school's data system; this has generated logins for anyone with parental responsibility but some extra logins have also been created where other friends and family are on the system. Please can you confirm you have correct logins for anyone with parental responsibility and return any extra logins to the school office. The system also has attempted to link all siblings together; if you find your child is not linked correctly to your account, please any errors to the school office and these will be actioned after half term. If you have not received a login for the system, please let the school office know and we will re-issue a username and password. Please search for the ios or Android app for your mobile devices; you will be able to receive letters and messages from school using these apps. You use the same login information for both the website and the apps. Have a safe and happy half term. God bless Mrs Jackson Education is the most powerful weapon with which to change the world (Nelson Mandela) Diary of Events St Joseph s Catholic Primary School Diary of Events ** denotes events when parents/carers are welcome to attend.
