2 Phonics the Building Blocks for Reading and Writing Horsey Jill Leighton Captain Jack
3 American reading research points out that in addition to teaching phonics we should also teach phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. The 5 Building Blocks for reading success 1. Phonemic awareness 2. Phonics 3. Fluency 4. Vocabulary 5. Comprehension ( the goal of reading) NB: These blocks are interrelated. If a children uses phonics to blend j-a-m and says jam but does not understand the word jam this is not really reading.
4 Learning Stars 1&2 Our phonics approach is taken from the new Pre-primary course Learning Stars 1 &2 which I co-authored with Jeanne Perrett. The phonics lessons and activities develop phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and ensure comprehension from the beginning.

6 Phonemic awareness: hearing sounds in words Before introducing the children to letters and sounds get them to hear sounds in spoken words. Children who hear sounds in words will find reading easier. I a-m J-a-ck. L-e-t -s p-l-ay! W-e s-p-ea-k i-n s-ou-n-d-s! Abracadabra! 1,2,3! Let s go to London! Come with me!
7 Play: I spy! Tip: Play I spy with rhyming words to develop phonological awareness.
8 sssstar teddy sssspider ssssocks Play : Odd one out Say the words and get the children to join in. Say, Which is the odd one out? Teddy! The first sound of teddy is../t/.

10 A cumulative Phonics chant is a great warm up activity! We introduce the children to the 26 letter sounds of the alphabet through an animal alphabet. (AAA ant, ant, ant, BBB bird, bird, bird ) The children learn the letter sounds quickly and associate each letter sound with an animal and an action.
11 Flashcards are a great way to introduce new letter sounds and vocabulary
12 Let s look at things beginning with C! Tip: Show how printed language works. Point from left to right.
13 Letter formation, airwriting and tracing
14 Play: Horsey s sound game Cake
15 Play: Match! (revision) Hold up a capital letter and a small letter flashcard. If they match (Aa) The children point and call out the letter sound (a)!
16 If they don t match get the children the children remain silent and fold their arms.
17 Develop a love for stories & get the children to join in
18 Assessment: The children should be able to: Say the sounds of the letters /c/ /d/ Say the names of the letters. Cc, Dd Name the phonics lesson vocabulary cat, caterpillar, car.dog, duck, dish fluently Say the initial sounds of word What s the first sound in the word car? /c/ duck? /d/ Form the letters correctly Follow words or text from left to right with finger Join in, and answer questions about the mini-story. NB The 5 Building Blocks for reading success: In the phonics lessons we have worked on phonemic awareness, developed strong vocabulary, modeled fluency and ensured comprehension.
19 Play: Letter sounds and emotions! Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Uu Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz Encourage the children to say the letter sounds according to the emotion! When they can say the letter sounds at speed, they are ready to read!

22 Blending & segmenting CVC words with a (e.g. hat) Tip: Remember! The ultimate goal of reading is COMPREHENSION. To achieve this goal children need to read individual words and then sentences fluently.
23 Use reading to understand a story: model fluency & check comprehension
24 Bella words & STAR words Make a poster of Star words and Bella words. Use pointers to get volunteers to point to a Bella word or a Star word of their choice and encourage the class to read the words.

26 Assessment: The children should be able to read and spell the phonics words read and spell new phonics words depending on the sounds recognise and read Star words and Bella words read the stories independently read simple stories that are new to them NB The 5 Building Blocks for reading success: In the phonics lessons we have worked on phonemic awareness, developed strong vocabulary, modeled fluency and ensured comprehension.
