1 Friday, April 29, 2016 By Tom Leffler and Larry Glenn TODAY S THOUGHT Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going IMPORTANT SURVEY: Let Larry or I know if you would miss The Closing Bell if we quit writing it!! It is time consuming to put together. Below are three options to consider: 1) Stop the Newsletter 2) Leave it as is, because you read it. 3) Make it a 1 page newsletter A decision will be made on May 6 th please give us your input about the newsletter CATTLE and HOGS 14- Day RSI 10-Day 50-Day Futures Net Change Closing Price 30-Year 30-Year Jun 16 LC s Aug 16 LC s May 16 FC s Aug 16 FC s Jun 16 LH s The cattle complex opened lower today, made some new contract lows and closed mostly positive today but well off the session highs The June live cattle has declined $17.45 from the March high to the April low; May feeders have dropped $27.30 and the August feeders down $26.00 Technically the cattle complex is oversold and due for a correction and fundamentally there has been plenty of negativeness already built in. That is until, the close when small lot buy saved the day. It was a session of buying old crop and selling new crop corn contracts. Corn spread traders believe in an improvement in corn export demand and decent conditions of planting in the Midwest. Planting will be interrupted this weekend in the Midwest. Rain passed through the area. Minor delay but dry weather returns in the 6 to 10 day forecast. Trend traders are still net short almost 50,000 contracts of corn according to the last COT report. Some of these traders have old short positions that still have profit. We should be close to 50% planted for corn on next Monday s crop report. The price pattern for the July corn contract shows a short term bullish pattern. It was been a rally month for the corn price. No deliveries posted against the May corn futures as deliveries started today. Larry Glenn Jul Corn today traded mixed, equaled the high of the week and closed slightly positive. The volume of trading was light to end the week. There was a round of buying seen in the wheat market at the close. Sideways trading was the theme for this week in the wheat market. Fresh market news lacking for wheat. A rain event is covering sections of the Plains States. This is a slow moving system and stays around through the weekend. In a large area, this moisture should be enough to finish this year s wheat production. The Kansas Wheat Tour starts next week. Crop scouts will walk in some muddy fields to count production. I would expect to see a higher yield number compared tom recent years. These scouts will see rust problems start to develop. Spray rigs both on the ground and in the air are active here in the northwest section of Kansas. Deliveries totaled 1,680 contracts against the May Chicago wheat future and 1,000 contracts against the May Kansas City wheat futures. This was higher than expected but no instant bearish effect on the wheat price. Larry Glenn 4/29/2016 Page 4 of 9
