6 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 2015 Pre-Conference Events Sponsored by 1:00-4:00PM SALON E,F,G,H Ethics and Risk Management in the New Era of Social Work Gwendolyn Spencer Prater, PhD, MSW This session, developed especially for social workers, is sponsored by the NASW Assurance Services (ASI) of Frederick, MD, and describes the most significant malpractice risks in social work today and numerous methods of mitigating and reducing one s risk of being sued for malpractice. Integral to addressing risk management and ethical decision making in the practice of social work are the NASW code of Ethics. This workshop will present the NASW code of ethics as the indicators for addressing ethical decision making in the practice of social work. The presentation is intended for social workers in all settings and positions, not just the clinical, therapeutic mental health setting. The session will cover key concepts in risk management, such as confidentiality and its exceptions, duty to warn, and informed consent. In addition to addressing the NASW Code of Ethics, This seminar will reveal the major reasons why social workers are sued and what you can do about those risks. We will define what constitutes a malpractice case and emphasize important recordkeeping issues, guidelines for supervision, special tips for clinical and private practitioners, and brief you about your malpractice insurance, its special features and implications for your practice. (1.5 CE) A3: Helping Families By Employing Effective Legislation & Intervention: Innovative Change for At-Risk Youth and Families Ronjonette N. Harrison, LCSW-R ALBANY/COLONIE New York continues to be the only state other than North Carolina that prosecutes all youth as adults when they turn 16 years of age. In 2012, New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman stated in his State of the Judiciary address, The adult criminal justice system is simply not designed to address the special problems & needs of 16- and 17-year-olds. Recognizing that NYS had fallen out of step with the rest of the nation, Buffalo City Court & HEART Foundation (HF) developed a specialized court to address the unique needs of 16 and 17 year old adult offenders. (1.5 CE) A4: Shock, Secondary Traumatic Stress and Vicarious Resilience in Social Worker First Responders David Hartman, LICSW and Diane Zimberoff, LMFT SALON B We review research on Secondary Traumatic Stress and Vicarious Resilience as it relates to first responders, including social workers in many work settings. 13 POSTER PRESENTATIONS Patient/Family Participation in Multidisciplinary Rounds Conferences: A Pilot Program in an Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital Kristen Bonistall, MS, MSW; Donna Russo, LCSW,CCM; Richard Novitch, MD; Adina Safdeye To increase collaboration in discharge planning between medical personnel, social work/case managers, and patients on an inpatient Cardio-Pulmonary rehabilitation unit, a pilot program (February- August 2014) invited patients and/or families to participate in a brief round table discussion at a weekly, multidisciplinary rounds conference. Program effectiveness was examined by surveying multiple stakeholders including patients, family members, and staff who participated in the program. Post-discharge patient satisfaction data for the unit was compared between before and after program initiation. Thirty one out of 191 invited patients (16%) patients opted to participate in the rounds discussion. Nine patients and 11 family members completed phone interviews, and 100% of respondents would recommend these meetings to other patients and families. Of the staff surveyed, 94% believed the program supported the discharge planning process. Quarterly patient satisfaction data was compared between the pilot program period to the previous year, however no mean significant differences in satisfaction were found on discharge-related survey questions. Further study will be required to better understand the relationship to overall patient satisfaction, and whether the patients who opted out of this program were statistically different from those who opted in. Linking Families with Community Resources through Parent Communication Boards Kylie Rebecca Head Start is a comprehensive program, which provides services to economically disadvantaged children and families across the nation. The Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act (Head Start Act, 2007), outlines a set of performance standards that all Head Start agencies must incorporate into their programs in order to support growth and deliver health, education, nutrition and social services to families. One of these performance standards is for Head Start centers to offer parents, either directly or indirectly, linkage to public school libraries, child and family agencies, mental health agencies, and other family support programs (Head Start Act, 2007). Another performance standard states that Head Start agencies should promote a partnership with community based organizations. This partnership strengthens the relationship between Head Start families and their community environment (Head Start Act, 2007). One way to carry out these performance standards is to provide Head Start families with information about community resources by posting materials on parent communication Boards. However, at two Suffolk County Head Start Centers, a social work intern found that the existing parent boards were not adequate in terms of the literature that was being presented to families. The parent boards were failing to present current information about local resources, specifically social service agencies. The Attachment Experiences of Women with Young Children in Women s Substance Abuse Treatment: An Exploratory Study N. Lael Telfeyan, PhD, LCSW-R, ACSW Maternal substance abuse is a high-risk social problem that impacts the development of children exposed to early disruptions such as parental separation, loss and abandonment, harmful and chaotic life circumstances, abuse and neglect. Through exploratory qualitative methods, this research investigates the attachment experiences, capacities, behaviors and characteristics exhibited by a sample of 13 inner-city, low-income, ethnically diverse women with children. This inquiry offers insights into the participants lived experience which have been marked by abandonment, abuse, neglect, parental addiction, separation or death; trauma, poverty and /or societal and intergenerational oppression. This study explores the effects of maternal substance abuse and the impact of treatment and recovery on mother-infant attachment. The researcher chronicled the quality and nature of patterns that occurred during treatment as reported by the participants in their own narratives. The narrative inquiry approach (Chase, 2005) has brought forth the life stories of 13 inner city women with young children who were previously and primarily addicted to crack cocaine and in a women s substance abuse treatment program. This study allowed the participants to tell their own narratives in their own words and to offer their insights into their own life histories. This non-judgmental forum of narrative inquiry facilitated uniquely reparative experiences for the women in the study. This researcher asserts that this exploratory qualitative approach has provided valuable data that may help enlighten the field about the personal experiences of women in treatment. Charmaz (2005) highlights the significance of narrative inquiry as an evolving venue for social change in the study of the experiences of women. Twenty-five interviews utilizing the Addiction Severity Index- Lite and in-depth open-ended taped interviews have been conducted with participants who were enrolled in an urban women s substance abuse treatment program. This study explored the effects of maternal substance abuse and the impact that treatment and recovery have upon mother infant attachment patterns. The results reveal that all the participants have experienced a series of traumatic disruptions during early childhood which continued throughout their lives. The tape recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed according to grounded theory methodology with the use of line by line coding. These codes were then categorized into axial codes and finally into 23 overarching Meta-themes that follow the participants lives from early childhood to the present POWER OF SOCIAL WORK CONFERENCE
