Why Support Us! Barnsley Hospital Charity is a local charity who make a real difference to the Barnsley Community. We fund projects within Barnsley Hospital that go above and beyond. We work to ensure that our patients receive the best possible care, in the most comfortable environment. By supporting us you will be making a very real difference to the lives of everyone in our community, Thousands of people are treated in our hospital every year and every penny that you raise will be spent on ensuring they receive the best care possible and that their loved ones are supported too.

Be a Superhero In much of today s culture, Superheroes are epitomised as having superhuman qualities and skills. However, all around us are real life superheroes In a nutshell, through using their superhero powers, superheroes save lives thousands of them! Our Doctors and nurses at Barnsley hospital save lives everyday so we think they are real life superheroes! This topic asks the children to consider this through active exploration of superheroes. We have made some suggestions as to how this could work in your classroom but you are the experts the superheroes in fact, and so we would love to hear the activities that have taken place in your classroom with your little super heroes! To compliment this scheme of work the charity would love to come into your school and speak in assembly or during class time about the super work carried out by our Doctors and Nurses at their local hospital. During the talk we can let the students know exactly what they will be supporting using case studies.

Superhero Storytime Primary School Personal Social & Emotional Development Communications & Language Mathematics Understanding the World Physical Development Expressive Arts & Design Superhero Story Time & Superhero Story Writing Communications & Language Understanding the World Choose a story that is about a Superhero. Talk to the children about what makes him/her a superhero. What qualities make a superhero? If they could be a superhero what would they choose as their special power? Thinking about the qualities that make a superhero, can they identify some superheroes in their life? Have they been saved by a superhero and in what way? How do everyday people such as Doctors and Nurses act as Superheroes? Ask the children to write their own superhero story. Ask them to think about how they will look, what is their name, do they have a secret identity, what is their super power. What do they do with their powers?

Cont. Superhero Training Camp Cool down: Encourage children to walk around as slowly as they can without touching anything. Child Initiated Activities: X-ray Vision Game This game tests our x-ray vision powers. Put all kinds of items in a box and let the children (who have something covering their eyes) identify them without sight, only touch or smell. This can be as creative as you like Kryptonite Toss Take some cardboard boxes and decorate them as apartment buildings. The "kryptonite" are ping pong balls painted bright green or green bean bags. Have the children throw the "kryptonite" into the "planets" and see how many they can throw in, every time throwing from a tougher distance. Squirt the villain Using washing up bottles filled with water; squirt the villain figures off their podiums. Super Hero Hunt The children are to capture as many villains as they can find. They must locate the superheroes and villains located around the place, tick them off on the clipboard, write their name on the sheet and then when you have found them all collect your superhero sticker. Top Superhero tip Why not have a sponsored event that showcases the superhero skills learnt at training camp? You could do a sponsored jump, a sponsored silence (which helps when being invisible!). How about a sponsored walk to the park whilst wearing your superhero capes and masks and completing tasks at the park in a superhero fashion! It could be a superhero day!.

Superhero Training Camp Primary School Personal Social & Emotional Development Communications & Language Mathematics Understanding the World Physical Development Expressive Arts & Design Superhero Training Camp Physical Development Personal Social & Emotional Development Expressive Arts & Design Communications & Language You have been selected for SUPER HERO TRAINING!! Please report to the super secret training location with the other trainees. You need to use your skill, strength and listening powers to complete all of the superhero challenges. Set up an obstacle course on the grass using anything you can find to create a challenging course. Balance beams, skipping ropes, stepping stones etc. Explain the task is to complete the course as an individual whilst maintaining your superhero persona! Consider encouraging themed movement Run faster than a speeding bullet! Leap over tall buildings Balance over crocodile infested lakes Protect and rescue people you could place something that needs to be rescued a doll, teddy. Once rescued, children could use the biggest superhero power of all saving lives. How could they use basic first aid skills to help?

Mask & Cape Making Primary School Personal Social & Emotional Development Communications & Language Mathematics Understanding the World Physical Development Expressive Arts & Design Mask & Cape Making Expressive Arts & Design Create superhero masks and capes that express the children s idea of what a superhero should be. Create templates that the children can decorate with anything they like. Be as creative as possible and we would love to see your creations! Here is a no fuss way to make your capes! Cut squares out of non-fray fabric Fold over the top of the cape and cut slits through the fold all the way along the top Thread some ribbon through the holes to be the fastener for the cape Decorate the cape with your own superhero identity Top superhero tip why not create artwork with the creations which can be sold to parents to raise funds for Barnsley Hospital Charity.

Superhero Day Encourage everyone at your school to dress up as their alter-ego Superhero for the day. Don t forget, superheroes don t have to super human - our doctors, nurses and patients are all super heroes in their own right! Ask your students to consider what qualities make a super hero and create your outfit to reflect this - how about sporting heroes, historical heroes or even someone they know that is a super hero in their eyes. Everyone taking part pays a 1

Superhero Tasks As a charity, we rely on volunteers to perform super hero tasks by giving up their time for free in order to raise funds for our work. Students could take part in their own super hero tasks and gain sponsorship for what they do. Here are some ideas of what they can do: Sponsored Car Wash Sponsored Swim/Run/Walk/Silence Volunteer at a local community project Odd jobs for a family member Gardening tasks Volunteer at a charity event Ask them to fill in a pledge form which they can display with pride!

BagsofChange Barnsley Hospital Charity are teaming up with Bag2theFuture, a business which organises collections of second hand clothing in return for cash for their charity. These items are then sold to developing countries in Africa, the Indian Sub-Continent and parts of Eastern Europe. These countries are encouraging entrepreneurs to develop import markets and build up business structures, thus creating employment opportunities. Here at Barnsley Hospital we hope to organise regular collections onsite and out in the community and if your school can help please contact us. Through this initiative your school can make a positive change to care at your local Hospital and within your local community, as well as contributing to the improvement of developing communities overseas. Bag2theFuture could also provide import/export education for your school/college etc in relation to Business Studies ie in relation to the recycling, business providing students with an insight to the timeline from collection of clothes through to the goods being sold overseas.

Why Get Involved 10 reasons to get involved! It s great fun and simple to do We have provided everything you need It is a great way of engaging with your local hospital It will generate good will amongst parents and could generate some great PR in your local paper for the school It encourage great team building amongst the children as they work towards a common aim It is flexible you can do as much or as little as you would like It s an opportunity for the whole school to join together as the activities work across the age groups It helps the students understand what goes on at their local hospital and will help them feel comfortable in this sometimes intimidating environment The children will think it is fantastic It raises much needed funds to provide care above and beyond in your local community

How to pay in your money In Person We love to hear all about your activities and so will happily come into school and collect the fundraising money. We can even come along with our full size mascot and giant cheque and make a real fuss of your Super Heroes! We will also happily speak in assemblies and classes about where and how the money will be spent. By Post Please make cheques payable to Barnsley Hospital Charity and send to Barnsley Hospital Charity, Barnsley Hospital, Gawber Road, Barnsley, S75 2EP. Online Donation Pages Any money collected on online donation pages, such as JustGiving or on our website will be paid directly to us Follow Us Like our facebook page Follow us on Contact Us Katie Cartwright - Fundraising Manager Janice Starkey - Fundraising Assistant barnsleyhospitalcharity@nhs.net
