1 3 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS // 8 SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS // 693 ALL-TIME WINS // 48 FIRST-ROUND NFL DRAFT PICKS // 70 FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICANS // 245 FIRST-TEAM ALL-SEC SELECTIONS Florida Gators // 2-0, 0-0 SEC Kentucky Wildcats // 2-0, 0-0 SEC THE STORYLINE UF s Jim McElwain earned his second victory as head coach of the Florida Gators last Saturday, beating East Carolina, 31-24, in The Swamp. With the win, the Gators are now 2-0 for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons. Through two weeks, UF s offense ranks in the top three in the SEC in passing offense (294.5), passing efficiency (179.8) and scoring offense (46.0). On the defensive side of the ball, UF ranks in the top three in rushing defense (25.5) and total defense (266.5). The Gator defense dominated East Carolina in the run game, allowing -13 yards. However, the Pirates did pass for 346 yards but the Gators forced three crucial turnovers, including a pick-six that turned out to be the difference in the game. With the Gators beating ECU last week, 31-24, Florida downed the same opponent twice in the same calendar year for the first time since it beat Auburn twice in Redshirt freshman Will Grier received the start at QB for the Gators in week two and went 10-for-17 with 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In his college debut in week one against New Mexico State, Grier passed for 166 yards, the most passing yards by a Florida quarterback in his first career appearance since Kyle Morris threw for 213 yards in a 69-0 win over Montana State on Sept. 3, A freshman quarterback (true or redshirt) has now started 70 games for the Gators. Florida is in those games. LAST TIME OUT - EAST CAROLINA The Gators escaped The Swamp with a victory over the same team it survived in a bowl game just nine months ago. Wideout Demarcus Robinson and tailback Kelvin Taylor sandwiched second-half touchdowns around cornerback Jalen Tabor s 39-yard interception for a score, as UF -- with Will Grier and Treon Harris sharing quarterback duties -- won their second outing for new Coach Jim McElwain before a raucous Ben Hill Griffin Stadium crowd. Grier, making his first collegiate start, completed 10 of 17 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Harris, who started the opener, went 5-for-8 for 54 yards, but led the Gators (2-0) on the drive that led to Taylor s touchdown -- and a 14-point lead -- with 6:57 remaining. GAME 3 SEPTEMBER 19 // 7:30 P.M. Commonwealth Stadium (61,000) Sophomore Treon Harris (5-2 as a starter) split time at the QB position with Grier against ECU, and went 5-for-8 for 54 yards and 32 rushing yards. Moving on to the third week of the season, UF travels to Lexington, Ky. to face SEC Eastern Division rival Kentucky at Commonwealth Stadium. UK enters the game 2-0 and fresh off a victory at South Carolina. UF has won 28 consecutive games against UK, dating back to 1986, which represents the longest active winning streak over a major opponent in an annual series. Consecutive Wins Over an Opponent in an Uninterrupted Series (Must have played in consecutive years) Streak Teams (Years) 43 Notre Dame over Navy ( ) 36 Nebraska over Kansas ( ) 32 Oklahoma over Kansas St. ( ) 29 Nebraska over Kansas St. ( ) 28 FLORIDA over KENTUCKY (1987-current) 28 Texas over Rice ( ) 26 Syracuse over Hobart ( ) 26 Tennessee over Kentucky ( ) The Gators are all-time against the Wildcats. Florida defeated Kentucky in triple overtime thriller at The Swamp in Week 3 a season ago. UF has a 37-4 (.902) record while playing in the month of September since the start of the 2005 season. UF is looking to win its first SEC game for the 11th consecutive season. The Pirates (1-1), though, did not go away. Kemp led them on a 10-play, 66-yard drive, hitting tight end Bryce Williams with 3:04 left to draw within seven. UF needed a first down to ice the game, but instead went three-and-out and punted the ball pack to ECU. ECU QB Blake Kemp, who completed 34 of 54 throws for 333 yards, three touchdowns and the one interception, again moved his team, driving 40 yards to the UF 13. But on second and 10, the ball just left the lefty s hand as defensive tackle Joey Ivie was bearing down. There was Alex McCalister to scoop up the ball and start racing for the far end zone. He would have made it too, had linebacker Jarrad Davis not tackled him, thus securing UF needed only to take a knee for seal the deal. 7 FLORIDA S OFFENSE Through two games, the Gators rank fourth in the SEC total offense (489.5 total yards per game) and third in scoring offense (46.0 points per game). For the seventh time in the last 11 seasons, Florida has scored at least 30 points and won each of its first two games. The Gators are converting 50 percent (14-of-28) of their third downs this season, a mark that is tied for third among SEC teams. Florida amassed over 600 total yards and scored eight offensive touchdowns against New Mexico State, marking the first time since Sept. 12, 2009 vs. Troy it reached both of those marks. The Gators 61 points in the season-opening win over NMSU were the most ever scored in a Florida head coach s debut. Five different Gators (JORDAN CRONKRITE, WILL GRIER, C YONTAI LEWIS, JORDAN SCARLETT, C.J. WORTON) scored their first career touchdowns in their win over the Aggies. Lewis became the first Gator since Ike Hilliard in 1994 to record two TD catches in his first-career game. 8 FLORIDA S DEFENSE The Gators have a new defensive coordinator in GEOFF COLLINS, who joined the UF staff after being a nominee for the Broyles Award (given annually to the nation s top assistant coach) while he was at Mississippi State. Despite the new name leading the defense, UF will look to have similar success. Following ECU s opening drive (8 plays, 75 yards), Florida s defense allowed just 48 total yards, three first downs (with one coming via penalty) and forced one turnover on a fumble the rest of the first half -- the Pirates averaged just 1.85 yards per play during that stretch. MARCUS MAYE s forced fumble in the second quarter against the Pirates was the third of his career -- BRIAN POOLE s fumble recovery on the same play was the second of his career. JOEY IVIE recorded the first multi-sack game of his career vs. East Carolina by notching his second, third and fourth sacks as a Gator. 11 HEAD COACH JIM McELWAIN Athletics director Jeremy Foley announced Jim McElwain as the 25th head coach of the Florida football program on December 4, In his third season at Colorado State, McElwain was named the 2014 Mountain West Coach of the Year and the AFCA Region 5 Coach of the Year after he led the Rams to a 10-2 record with a bowl appearance. McElwain, a 30-year coaching veteran, spent the seasons as offensive coordinator at Alabama, where he played a key role in leading the Crimson Tide to two BCS national championships (2009 and 11). It s an honor to be a part of the one of most powerful brands in college athletics in the Florida Gators, said McElwain. I m humbled, yet very excited about the tremendous opportunity that Dr. Machen and Jeremy Foley have afforded me and my family. I can t tell you how eager I am to get to Gainesville to set a course for who we are going to be and what we will be all about. Coach McElwain was someone we targeted from the beginning of the search, said Foley. The more we worked through the process and did our due diligence, coupled with our meeting and conversations with him and those around him, it was obvious he is the right person to lead the Florida Gator football program. COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS Took over a struggling CSU program and turned it around in just three seasons. The Rams had not had back-to-back winning seasons since and had won just three games each of the three years prior to McElwain s arrival. After going 4-8 in his first season in Fort Collins, CSU won eight games in 2013, its most wins in 12 seasons, including a victory in the New Mexico Bowl over Washington State. The Rams offense arguably was the best in school history in 2014, as quarterback Garrett Grayson, wide receiver Rashard Higgins and running back Dee Hart led an explosive attack. Grayson, the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, ranked among the nation s passing leaders with 4,006 yards, 32 touchdowns and a passer rating. Higgins, a Biletnikoff Award finalist, led the nation with receiving yards per game and 17 touchdowns. Hart rushed for 1,275 yards with 16 touchdowns on the ground. Through 12 games in the regular season (McElwain did not coach the bowl game), CSU averaged a school-record yards per game (13th nationally) and averaged 7.2 yards per play (4th nationally). The Rams passing attack led the way with record-breaking numbers, averaging yards per game (7th nationally) and 9.2 yards per pass attempt (2nd nationally). They also ranked 25th in the nation scoring 35.9 points per game. The 2013 New Mexico Bowl win capped an 8-6 season that saw McElwain s team re-write the school s record book in several offensive categories, including new standards for single-season points scored (507) and yards per game (470.8). The 2013 Rams scored 50 or more points four times and topped the 500-yard mark for total offense eight times, both school records, and were the only team in Division I FBS to feature a 3,500-yard passer (Garrett Grayson, 3,696) and a 1,500-yard rusher (Kapri Bibbs, 1,741). Colorado State made the second-biggest improvement among FBS schools in scoring offense from 2012 to 2013 (from 100th to 22nd) behind Auburn (from 112th to 12th). The Rams year-toyear improvement in total offense was fourth-biggest in FBS (100th to 24th) behind Auburn (+104), Washington (+84) and Missouri (+80). In four seasons at Alabama, McElwain played a key role in the Tide compiling an overall record of 48-6, serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. His offense led the nation by committing only 57 turnovers in that period and sent two players to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York: 2009 winner Mark Ingram and 2011 finalist Trent Richardson. In 2011, Alabama led the SEC in rushing at yards per game (16th nationally), ranked second in total offense at total yards per contest (31st nationally) and third in scoring at 34.8 points per game (20th nationally). McElwain also had recruiting responsibilities in the state of Florida while coaching at Alabama. In back-to-back seasons, McElwain led the Alabama offense to record-breaking seasons. During the 2009 National Championship season, the Tide offense set a school record with 5,642 yards from scrimmage. The 2010 offense topped that total as the Tide offense set new school marks for total yards (5,773) and total passing yards (3,395) in one fewer game than In 2010 under McElwain s tutelage, quarterback Greg McElroy set single-season passing records with a 70.9 completion percentage, 20 touchdown passes and 2,987 yards. He finished the year fourth nationally in pass efficiency with a rating of His completion percentage that season was the second-best in SEC history. McElwain s 2008 offense proved to be one of the nation s most efficient and productive units. Alabama finished fifth in the SEC in scoring offense (30.1 ppg) and 35th nationally after ranking 64th (seventh in the SEC) in that category in 2007 with an average of 27.1 ppg. At Fresno State in 2007 he made an immediate impact, helping lead the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record, including a triumph over Georgia Tech in the Humanitarian Bowl. McElwain served as the assistant head coach, receivers coach and special teams coach at Michigan State from In 2005, five Spartan receivers had at least 28 receptions and the group combined to a set another school record with 24 touchdown catches. He coached 2004 All-America punter Brandon Fields and kicker Dave Rayner, who led the Big Ten Conference in scoring. The 2003 MSU team reached the Alamo Bowl behind a receiving corps that set school records for receptions (312) and yards (3,510). Prior to his stint at Michigan State, McElwain spent three seasons ( ) at Louisville as the receivers coach and special teams coach as the Cardinals earned bowl bids in each of those three seasons. He coached four first-team All-Conference USA selections at Louisville and also tutored three of the Cardinals all-time leading receivers, including Deion Branch and Arnold Jackson. From , McElwain was the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and receivers coach at Montana State. Under his direction, quarterback Rob Compson threw for nearly 7,000 career yards and a school-record 54 touchdowns. McElwain also coached the Bobcats all-time leading receiver Chip Hobbs, who caught 144 career passes for 2,060 yards and 18 TDs. 12 WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT HEAD COACH JIM McELWAIN Coach McElwain was someone we targeted from the beginning of the search. The more we worked through the process and did our due diligence, coupled with our meeting and conversations with him and those around him, it was obvious he is the right person to lead the Florida Gator football program. -- UF Athletics Director Jeremy Foley TIM TEBOW // PHILADELPHIA EAGLES QUARTERBACK He s someone who has a great track record. He s been in big-time games. He s been in big-time situations. He s been at a school where there s a lot of pressure and at Florida you need to know how to handle big games and a lot of pressure because that s something that comes with being the head coach at UF. DANTE FOWLER, JR. // JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS LINEBACKER He s a great, cool guy. I m not going to lie. He s a winner. He s very competitive and he s confident that he knows what he s doing. He put together a great coaching staff with Randy Shannon and a lot of great coaches. He s going to put the program back on top. They re going to have fun. He s serious, but he makes sure you enjoy football. Before he got to CSU, we were missing that. He changed the atmosphere, made it more of a family culture. So Florida football, I won t be surprised if they re battling for an NCAA championship in a couple of years. A.J. McCARRON // CINCINNATI BENGALS QUARTERBACK He was an unbelievable coach for me, not only as a player, but as a person. He just taught me a lot about life, how to act, what to do, what not to do. He means the world to me. NICK SABAN // ALABAMA HEAD COACH First of all he s a real quality person. Players really respect him and like him. He s a really good teacher. He s innovative in terms of things that he does that create problems. And I think he really has the best interest of the player in mind, and the game. BRIAN GRIESE // ESPN ANALYST I think Jim McElwain is a slam-dunk hire. Let s put it that way. He can flat-out coach. From a quarterback s perspective, I love this hire. BARRETT SALLEE // BLEACHER REPORT SEC WRITER McElwain doesn t have the same name recognition that Meyer had when he came to Gainesville prior to the 2005 season, but he has similar credentials. Offensive guru? Check. Proven winner? Check. What s not to like? SHAQ BELL // FORMER COLORADO STATE CORNERBACK He s an up-front guy. When I met with him, he told me he wanted me to be a leader. That s from like 1-on-1 meetings. He ll stay on you about it. He holds everyone accountable. He doesn t have any favorites. He coaches everybody the same. BARRETT JONES // ST. LOUIS RAMS OFFENSIVE LINEMAN Mac s greatest strength is that he s a tremendous teacher of the game. He has a special ability to put things in terms that guys can understand. He s also great at getting guys to buy into the system and understands how to put guys in positions where they will be successful. GREG McELROY // SEC NETWORK ANALYST He s one of the most relatable coaches I ve ever been around. His ability to feature players in game plans and getting players to buy in are a few of his greatest strengths. He s a diligent worker and is fiercely competitive. Florida Gator fans should rejoice. PAT FORDE // YAHOO! SPORTS COLUMNIST I believe the Gators hired a guy who can win in McElwain. He dramatically upgraded CSU and brings a Nick Saban-style organizational approach to Gainesville. McElwain has proven himself as a head coach, and he knows offense. DESMOND HOWARD // ESPN ANALYST What I ve heard about Coach McElwain is that he lets his assistant coaches coach. He likes to get guys who have experience in multiple systems, meaning that you re not just focused on one type of system; you re very flexible. He can get guys to play for him because he s not trying to tailor them just to one specific system. one of the most relatable coaches I ve ever been around. 20 GAME 1 GAME 2 FLORIDA 61, NEW MEXICO STATE 13 September 5, 2015 Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field Gainesville, FL (Attendance: 90,227) FLORIDA 31, EAST CAROLINA 24 September 12, 2015 Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field Gainesville, FL (Attendance: 88,034) After punting on their first possession of the game, the Gators scored a touchdown on five of their next six drives to jump out to a halftime lead against New Mexico State. UF saw contributions by a lot of new faces, as a pair of young quarterbacks (So. Treon Harris, RS-Fr. Will Grier) combined to throw for 379 yards and four touchdowns, while a balanced rushing attack added four more scores. Defensively, the Gators shut down the Aggies in the second half, forcing five punts and an interception while holding them to minus-one total yard after the break. Score by Quarters Score New Mexico St Florida In a back-and-forth game, the Gators held on to beat the Pirates in a rematch of the 2015 Birmingham Bowl. Florida continued to use two quarterbacks, as Will Grier and Treon Harris split time at the helm of UF s offense. Florida secured the victory with 12 seconds left when ECU quarterback Blake Kemp fumbled and the Gators Alex McCalister recovered. UF totaled 373 yards of offense, led by Grier s 151 passing yards and two scores. Tight end DeAndre Goolsby scored his first career touchdown and had 94 yards on three catches, while Demarcus Robinson had five catches for 55 yards and a score. Kelvin Taylor led the rushing attack with 55 yards and a touchdown. The Florida defense stifled the run game, limiting ECU to (-13) yards for the game, the fewest rushing yards allowed by the Gators since Jarrad Davis led the way with 10 tackles, including three tackles-for-loss. Jalen Tabor scored his first career touchdown on a 39-yard return late in the third quarter to give Florida a lead. Joey Ivie recorded a career-high three sacks.
