2 From the President Turning the page to a new year brings new and exciting opportunities to impact a world that is becoming vastly more accessible as technology brings us into immediate contact with our global neighbors. According to Franklin Roosevelt, A nation, like a person, has a mind a mind that must be kept informed and alert, that must know itself, that understands the hopes and needs of its neighbors all the other nations that live within the narrowing circle of the world. Keeping pace with our changing world requires a commitment that benefits from connections that we make locally, throughout our state and nation, and with our neighbors abroad. As the technology that allows and maintains these connections becomes more accessible, we must ensure that we meet our neighbors educated, aware, and prepared to participate in a global society. To that end, Atlanta Technical College provides opportunities for education and career preparation in more than 100 programs of study in the areas of business and public service technologies, health and public safety technologies, and industrial and transportation technologies. Rigorous academic preparation is complemented by community and global awareness activities including our Halle Exchange Program with Felix Fechenbach Berufskolleg in Detmold, Germany. photo by Ron Witherspoon We are living in a time that encourages multiple forms of collaboration. As globalization blurs the borders between countries, each of us deserves the tools and education to become a world-changing force. With the resources and awareness that can be found at Atlanta Technical College, each of us can become the global citizen that we wish to be. 5 Halle Exchangea student's perspective I m delighted to have had a chance to experience the Halle Exchange Program as a student delegate representing Atlanta Technical College. My trip from Atlanta, Georgia to Detmold, Germany was a journey that changed my life in many ways. A new-found meaning in my career path: In Germany, I had the opportunity to complete an internship at AFV Production/Media Company, assisting the staff as they produced commercials for various clients. The internship opportunity helped expand my knowledge about the film industry; how to conduct a film shoot and how to edit film in the post production process. The internship also allowed me to build on the skills I obtained through my studies in the Visual Communications program here at Atlanta Technical College. I was asked by the company owner to redesign a new business card and letterhead using the same company logo. Out of four designs I submitted, the owner chose one of my designs and this design has actually become the new business cards and letterhead for the company. I m so excited! My vision of design was enhanced: My Academic Advisor, Mr. Randolph, planned a day trip for the two Visual Communications (VCM) student delegates to visit the Bauhaus School of Design in Dessau, Germany. The tour of the museum, the interior architecture, and fixtures throughout the buildings helped me see how color, line, and shape can come together to produce harmony. I was blown away! I know my graphic design layouts will improve from this experience. Photographic skills improved: As a Photographer, I am always looking for wonderful settings, beautiful landscapes, and great subjects to capture through the lens. Having the wonderful buildings and landscapes around me in Germany, led me to further develop my photographic skills. My lens captured some beautiful surroundings and I learned to use the features on my camera in new ways. I took over 2000 photos while in Germany. Wow! The trip to Germany was incredible! This, indeed, was a life-changing event. Thanks to Atlanta Technical College, I am truly living my dream by seeing the world! Special thanks to the Halle Foundation and Atlanta Technical College for selecting me for such an outstanding opportunity and for showing me that nothing in life is unachievable. 6 Atlanta Tech Students Study in Germany and Gain a Competitive Edge If you visited Atlanta Tech s campus early in the fall, you might have noticed that not everyone was speaking English. In fact, 12 students and nine staff members spent much of their time practicing German. The group was preparing for a two-week educational and cultural experience in Germany as part of the Halle Exchange program. Guten Morgen! (Good morning!) and Wie geht es Ihnen? (How are you?) echoed throughout the college s hallways as the group prepared for its September 17 departure. For the majority of the visit, the group stayed in Detmold, Germany. The students and staff members lived with host families and attended classes at Felix Fechenbach Berufskolleg (FFB), which is Atlanta Tech s sister college in Germany. For much of the first week, the delegation visited civic and cultural institutions, meeting with the Director of the Lippe Chamber of Commerce, the Mayor of Detmold, and the Prince and Princess of Lippe. During a one-day excursion to Berlin, the group toured the Pergamon Museum, Parliament, and the Holocaust memorial, and met with the US Ambassador to Germany. For the rest of the trip, the students primarily remained in Detmold, focusing on gaining valuable work experience with local companies. Each person was paired with a German company in his field of study. After two weeks of cultural exposure and rigorous instruction, the delegation returned to Atlanta with piles of photos, heartwarming stories, incomparable international work experience, and a lifetime of memories. Danke schön, Germany! 6

8 NEWS White House Hosts the First Summit on Community Colleges Community colleges are at the center of Americans effort to educate our way to a better economy. -Dr. Jill Biden US DOE Awards Atlanta Technical College More than $400,000 Atlanta Technical College will receive $419,198 in grant funding from the US Department of Education s Predominately Black Institutions (PBI) program. The award will support Atlanta Technical College s Institute for Males (AIM), an on-campus auxiliary program designed to increase the enrollment and retention of males who wish to develop themselves by pursuing a college education. (Offi cial White House Photo by Samantha Appleton) On October 5, 2010 Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, convened the White House Summit on Community Colleges. The event was organized at President Barack Obama s urging to emphasize the important role that community and technical colleges have played and will continue to play in equipping Americans with the skills and education they need to sustain our competitive edge in the global economy. As a precursor to the summit, President Obama launched Skills for America s Future, a program encouraging business and industrial leaders to collaborate with community colleges to create curricula and training modules that prepare graduates to succeed in the workforce. The president urged Americans to enroll in community and technical colleges, stating that they offer viable options for high school graduates, the unemployed, and the underemployed. He set the aggressive goal of having an additional fi ve million community college degrees and certifi - cates awarded by Jill Biden Getting Americans back to work is America s great challenge. And community colleges are critically important to preparing graduates for those jobs. We are here today because community colleges are entering a new day in America, and here s why: For more and more people, community colleges are the way to the future. They re giving real opportunity to students who otherwise wouldn t have it. They re giving hope to families who thought the American Dream was slipping away. They are equipping Americans with the skills and expertise that are relevant to the emerging jobs of the future. They re opening doors for the middle class at a time when the middle class has seen so many doors close to them. President Obama These (community colleges) are places where young people can continue their education without taking on a lot of debt. These are places where workers can gain new skills to move up in their careers. These are places where anyone with a desire to learn and to grow can take a chance on a brighter future for themselves and their families -- whether that s a single mom, or a returning soldier, or an aspiring entrepreneur. And community colleges aren t just the key to the future of their students. They re also one of the keys to the future of our country. We are in a global competition to lead in the growth industries of the 21st century. And that leadership depends on a well-educated, highly skilled workforce. The PBI program supports colleges whose undergraduate enrollment is at least 40% African-American and at least 50% low-income or first-generation college students. The funds can be used for a wide range of projects, including programs that are structured to encourage elementary and secondary school students to pursue a college education and to develop tutoring, counseling, and service programs that improve academic success. In a prepared statement, US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said, This program provides valuable resources to ensure that African-American students are successful in college. Schools funded by this program will play a vital role in meeting President Obama s goal for America to once again have the highest college completion rate by the end of the decade. A total of 23 colleges throughout the US received $10.8 million in grants from the PBI program. Along with Atlanta Technical College, five additional schools from within the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) received grants. The amount given to the six TCSG colleges accounted for 22% of the total grants and was the largest awarded in any state. Our colleges put forth a great amount of hard work to receive these funds, but the result was well-worth the effort, said TCSG Commissioner Ron Jackson. We want as many students as possible to realize the value of a college education. These grants will help us to bring more African- American students into our technical colleges classrooms and labs and, ultimately, help to create a better-educated and more versatile 21st Century workforce for Georgia and our nation. 8

9 PROGRAM PROFILE Pharmacy Tech What is a Pharmacy Tech? A pharmacy technician is a medical professional who works alongside a registered pharmacist. He prepares medications for dispensation, manages insurance billing and claims, labels prescriptions, manages sterile IV preparation, and counts pills. This profession is a great option for people who desire to enter the medical field in a short time. The primary distinction between a pharmacy tech and a pharmacist is that a technician does not counsel patients and must work under a registered pharmacist s supervision. Career Outlook According to the US Department of Labor, the pharmaceutical field is on pace to be one of the nation s fastest-growing industries. Robbie Howard, Pharmacy Technology Program Coordinator at Atlanta Technical College, explains why this field is expanding when so many others are shrinking. The primary reason this field is flourishing is the baby boomers, who are reaching the age when a lot of chronic diseases arise and there is a high demand for people who can properly dispense the prescriptions they need to treat their ailments. Tiffany Stoney, Pharmacy Technology Instructor and Infection Control Coordinator at the college, says that the field is even broader than most people realize. The average person is familiar with the retail options available in this industry. He sees pharmacy techs working in his local Walgreens, CVS stores, and Publix pharmacies. However, many people don t realize that pharmacy techs also work within inpatient facilities such as nursing homes, prisons, long-term care facilities, and hospice care centers. The career options for pharmacy techs are nearly limitless. With the emergence of mail-order pharmacies, our graduates are working with companies throughout the US. Atlanta Technical College s Program Atlanta Technical College offers three programs in Pharmacy Technology. Pharmacist Assistant Technical Certificate - prepares graduates for entry-level opportunities in retail and ambulatory care pharmacies Pharmacy Technology Diploma Program - track for students who desire to work in retail and ambulatory pharmacies or specialty care or inpatient facilities Pharmacy Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree - this program s graduates are proficient in all areas of pharmacy technology. In addition to the medical and operational courses offered in the TCC and diploma programs, students on this track also must pass general education and customer service courses, which prepare them for supervisory positions or advanced studies in the field. This program is ideal for anyone hoping to enroll in pharmacy school or continue his education at a traditional university. Areas covered in the associate degree programs include principles of dispensing medications, anatomy and physiology, pharmaceutical calculations, introductions to microcomputers, medical terminology for allied health sciences, principles of preparing sterile medications, and more.
