Event Details All children must have a bike and a helmet that is deemed fit for purpose and safe to use for the event. NO HELMET, NO RIDE. Registration Registration is from 8am in the school hall which will be clearly signposted. It will close at 10am. All race equipment must be left in transition and transition vacated by 10.10am. Please make sure that you register your child by 10am. They will be given their timing chip, race numbers, a laminated bike number with cable ties and security bands. A race briefing will take place in the gym at 10.15am or outside in the car park if dry. Once registered your child can then leave their bike and any race equipment in the transition area.

3 When entering or leaving transition before and after the race please ensure you and your child are wearing your security wristbands and the other one is attached to their bike. Only those with wristbands will be allowed in transition. All children should report to the hall at least 15 minutes before their allocated start time for their age group. They should stand under the relevant age group sign at the side of the hall and they will then be escorted to the pool. The start times are approximate and where possible we will swim people earlier if others have not turned up and if the children are there and ready to go. The first wave will go at 10.45am and the following waves will go at defined times to allow each wave to complete their swim. The event will start with the 8 year olds and will continue up through the age groups with the 15/16 year olds setting off last. Parents cannot go onto poolside unless it is exceptional circumstances and it is agreed by the swim co-ordinator. This is to avoid unnecessary congestion on poolside and to make it safer for the lifeguard to monitor the children in the pool. No photos are to be taken on poolside at any time. Approximate Start Times for each age category are listed below: AGE TIME 8 years 10.45am 9 /10 years 10.55am 11/12 years 11.50am 13/14 years 12.25pm 15/16 years 12.45pm Race Distances Age (as at 31/12/16) Swim Distance (Pool) Cycle Distance (Mainly Grass) Run Distance (Grass and Tarmac) 8 years 50 metres (2 lengths) 800m (1 lap) 600m (1 lap) 9/10 years 100 metres (4 lengths) 1.5km (2 laps) 1.1km (2 laps) 11/12 years 150 metres (6 lengths) 2.2km (3 laps) 1.6km (3 laps) 13/14 years 250 metres (10 lengths) 3.5km (5 laps) 2.6km (5 laps) 15/16 years 400m (16 lengths) 5.7km (8 laps) 4.2km (8 laps) The Swim Heated indoor 25 metre pool with 6 lanes. Swimmers will not normally be permitted to swim backstroke or butterfly. Everyone will start the swim at the shallow end of the pool. Children should swim the appropriate number of lengths according to their age (please see table under Race Distances ). If you would prefer to swim next to the wall, just ask the person in charge on poolside. If you get into difficulties during the swim you can gain assistance from the walls or the lane ropes. Just call out if you need any help and raise your hand. There will be a qualified Lifeguard on poolside at all times. No swim aids, flippers or wetsuits may be used. Goggles and nose clips may be worn. Coverings below the knee and covering the arms are not permitted in pool based swims.

4 Transition At the end of the swim children will exit at the shallow end (smaller children will be helped out). Please note that there is a run to the transition area from the pool. All items should be placed in the boxes provided on poolside when instructed to do so before starting their swim. Children must put on shoes at the pool hall along with t-shirts, shorts and race belts (if applicable) before leaving for transition. Swimwear must not be completely removed on poolside. Once children have completed their swim, they must make their way out of the pool (walk don t run) through the fire doors at the shallow end and continue to transition. Children must take ALL belongings (goggles and swim hats) to the transition area after their swim. Children should bring a small plastic tub with them and place it in transition next to their bike with their race number clearly marked on it. The marshals can then place any items in the correct box which will help eliminate items being lost. Goggles and swim hats are not to be thrown to parents on the way to transition as this will result in disqualification. Marshals will help children un-rack and rack their bikes as the racking can be quite high. They will not help them with clothing or shoes or putting on helmets. The transition is on the tennis courts beside the sports centre. The Cycle The cycle takes place on grass around the top school field. All competitors should have a safe and roadworthy bicycle and helmet for the event. The cycle starts at the end of the transition area and competitors should push their bike out of transition and only mount their bike once they are instructed to do so. All children will be required to have their helmet on and done up securely before they leave the transition area with their bike. Children should cycle the appropriate number of laps according to their age (please see table under race distances ). It is the child s responsibility to know how many laps they are required to complete and to count them. Children will be given a BLUE band at the end of each lap which they should wear around their wrist. Children MUST stop to collect these. These will then be counted once they have crossed the finish line to check they have done the appropriate number of laps. Children who do not have the required number of bands will be disqualified for not completing the course. The route will be marked out using cones and plastic coloured flags. Children should always keep the cones and RED flags to their right hand side. There will be marshals around the route; however it is the child s responsibility to know the route so please allow them to walk around it before they start. When you have finished the required course you will be directed back to the transition area where you will leave your bike. The Run The run is on the bottom school field on the running track. Please note: Running spikes are NOT suitable. Children should run or walk the appropriate distance for their age (please see table under race distances ). It is the child s responsibility to know the route they are required to complete. Children will be given a RED band at the end of each lap which they should wear around their wrist. Children who do not have the required number of bands will be disqualified for not completing the course. There will be marshals along the route. When you have finished the required distance you will then run to the finish.

5 The Finish The finish is situated in the school field. Please do not ask the finish line officials for your race time or place as they will not know it. It will be worked out on the completion of the event as athletes will be starting at different times. There will be water available at the finish. The child s race time consists of their overall time taken to complete all 3 disciplines and starts when they start their swim and ends at the finish line. All children will receive a medal. Presentations Awards will be given to the top 3 boys and girls of each age group. There will be spot prizes given out at the presentation, so please don t rush off at the end as it may be your child that receives one. The presentations will take place as soon after the event as possible (approximately 1.45pm) either on the field, or in the hall, dependent on the weather. Please can all parents collect bikes and kit from the transition area PRIOR to the presentations as the transition area needs to be set up for the next day s event. Useful Tips Your event numbers must be securely attached to your top and visible to the front and back during the race. Please secure each number with 4 pins, 1 in each corner. Race belts can be worn however the number must be visible on your back for the cycle and on your front for the run. Please do not cut your race number down as this could result in disqualification. Attach the laminated number to the front of your bike using the tie wraps provided, so this can be seen clearly. If you use your race belt, place your race numbers back to back and clip it on the belt, so it can be seen if it flips up. Please note: routes may change due to conditions and all competitors will be made aware of any changes at registration. Tips to Parents We ask that excited parents do not accompany their children around the course as this could cause confusion and danger on the course route. It may also result in disqualification of their child. Please read the Athlete s Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct which is enclosed with this pack. Parents are not allowed to assist their child in any way, whether this means helping them put their trainers on or their t-shirt/vest on. Assistance will result in the disqualification of their child. Marshals will be available throughout the course to give assistance if necessary. First Aid will be available at the event HQ. Refreshments including hot drinks, snacks and sandwiches will be available to purchase throughout the event. Parents of children in the 8 years and 9/10 years categories will have one 10 minute window to collect their child s bike from transition. This will be as soon as the last 10 year old goes out on the run and the 10 minutes will start at that point. If you miss this window you will not be able to collect it until the last 14 year old goes out on the run. Please don t ask the marshals to get your child s bike at any other time. You will be told no by the marshals as this will disrupt the entire event. However, if you do collect your child s bike, please stay and cheer on fellow competitors as they complete their race and enjoy the atmosphere.

6 Please do not ask the officials or the results co-ordinator about any times or results as they will not know. They are worked out on completion of the event. Nagging the officials will only hold up the event and the prize giving further. In case of bad weather please make sure that you bring appropriate clothing. In case of severely water-logged grass the cycle may be shortened to avoid the grass. Results will be available after the conclusion of the event at For event queries contact Zoe Harris on For urgent queries on the day only please contact Rules A copy of the relevant British Triathlon Competition Rules is included in the back of this pack. Please read the Athlete s Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct which is also included at the back of this pack. As this is a children s event the race referee and marshals will use common sense within the rules where necessary. We are not there to watch children struggle unnecessarily. The decision of the Race Officials is FINAL. PLEASE ENJOY THE EVENT AND HAVE LOTS OF FUN BUT MOST OF ALL HAVE A SAFE RACE

Athletes must take responsibility for ensuring they complete the correct distances. Parents/Guardians are not permitted to assist athletes during the race. Any assistance may lead to an athlete being disqualified. Help your child to recognise good performance, not just results. Never punish or belittle your child for losing, making mistakes or a poor performance. Only ever encourage in a positive manner. Never pace your child or run beside them. Doing so may lead to an athlete being disqualified. If you intend to take any photographs/video footage at any event, you must familiarise yourselves with the British Triathlon guidelines to taking photos/video. Use appropriate language at all times. Swearing and abusive language is completely unacceptable by athletes and parents, and may lead to an athlete being disqualified. Officials, referees, marshals and event volunteers must not be approached, confronted or challenged during an event. Anyone doing so will lead to their child being disqualified. If you wish to challenge the result of an event or the distances an athlete has completed, the appeals procedure must be followed but not until all the day s races are completed. Appeals An appeal is a request for a review of a decision made by a referee, official or marshal. Appeals cannot be made against judgment calls by officials.
