This lesson is part of a series of lessons that describes each sense. Using the sense of smell students will try to identify objects placed in brown lunch bags. Additional Learning Objectives 1. None Required Background Knowledge 1. Senses - Introduction to senses 1.F.I Essential Questions 1. What are the five senses? 2. What are the body parts responsible for the five senses? 3. Do you know anyone that does not have one of the five senses? Introduction / Motivation Ask the students about the five senses. Ask the students to identify different smells. Procedure Session I: How we smell 10 minutes Instructor preparation: 1. Photocopy appropriate number of How we smell worksheet so each student has a copy. The instructor will: 1. Ask the students how they smell and what part of the body is used to smell

3 Partnerships Implementing Engineering Education 2. Have the students complete the how we smell worksheet. Discuss how the scent goes into the nose to the brain and then we smell. Session II: Match the smell 25 minutes Instructor preparation: 1. Photocopy appropriate number of the Match the smell worksheets so each student has a copy. 2. Prepare 5 brown paper bags with the following material in each bag: a. BAG A = Orange peel b. BAG B = Tissue sprayed with perfume c. BAG C = Powdered sugar d. BAG D = Glue e. BAG E = Grass clippings 3. Set up 5 stations where the bags will be located. The instructor will: 1. Pass out Match the smell worksheet to the students. 2. Divide the students into groups so that each group is at a station. Only allow the students to use their sense of smell to determine what is in each bag. 3. Allow the students to complete their worksheets by moving to each station. Session III: Mystery smell 15 minutes Instructor preparation: 1. Photocopy appropriate number of the Mystery smell worksheets so each student has a copy. 2. Prepare 3 brown paper bags with a mystery item in each bag for the students to identify. Suggestions: a. Half eaten apple b. Soap c. A pudding cup - 3 -

4 Partnerships Implementing Engineering Education 3. Set up 3 stations with one of the bags at each station. The instructor will: 1. Pass out Mystery smell worksheet to the students. 2. Divide the students into groups so that each group is at a station. Only allow the students to use their sense of smell to determine what is in each bag. 3. Allow the students to complete their worksheets by moving to each station.
