2 Two types of Syllable Stress: - is on one syllable in multi-syllable words. Sentences Stress - is on the key words in a sentence. meantime suggestion encouragement Things to remember about : Every multi-syllable word in English has one stressed syllable. This stress can not be changed. Mandarin speakers might put the: same stress on every syllable stress on the wrong syllable Why is so Important? Native speakers rely on word stress to recognise words. Stress makes English clear and interesting to listen to. When we stress a syllable in a word we put all the focus on the stressed syllable. In the stressed syllable we use a higher pitch and we make a full strong vowel. 5 - Homographs Homographs are words that have the same spelling but different meaning and sometimes different pronunciation. 10 Star Joke A new business was opening and one of the owner s friends wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card; it said Rest in Peace. The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said Sir, I m really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying "Congratulations on your new location" Star Joke - business opening owners occasion arrived florist complain obvious mistake sorry imagine somewhere funeral today congratulations location Star Joke - Sentence Stress A new business was opening.... wanted to send flowers for the occasion.
