Scope To remove and replace the solenoid valve assembly in the Sievers UPW Boron Analyzer. This procedure describes how to remove and replace the solenoid valve assembly in the Sievers UPW Boron Analyzer and applies to the current revision of the assembly. 3. Responsibilities The removal and replacement of this assembly is to be performed by personnel trained in electro-mechanical equipment maintenance. The successful performance of this procedure requires that you be mechanically proficient with assemblies, tools, and mounting hardware. Please read the entire instruction before proceeding. Additionally, ensure that you have familiarized yourself with the analyzer by thoroughly reading the Operation and Maintenance Manual. 4. Safety WARNING Although you will turn off power to the analyzer, the power cord to the unit will remain connected for ESD protection. To avoid potentially dangerous shock, do not touch any component in the card cage area (upper-left corner) of the analyzer. 5. Materials This procedure requires that you gain access to the inside of the analyzer. To avoid potentially dangerous shock, be sure to power off the analyzer as described in the procedure. To ensure correct grounding of the chassis for electro-static discharge (ESD) protection, do not disconnect the power cord from the unit. Be cautious when handling electronic components in and around the card cage. Procedure 6.1 Prepare the analyzer for the solenoid valve assembly removal and replacement If the analyzer is currently operating, press STOP on the front panel to put the analyzer in a stopped state Turn off power by toggling the On/Off switch on the side of the analyzer to the 0 position Shut off flow of sample fluid into the analyzer by closing the valve(s) of all source water inlet lines. 6.2 Remove the existing solenoid valve assembly from the analyzer Open the door of the analyzer Remove the ESD wrist strap from its packaging. Slip the wrist loop over your hand and cinch it snugly around your wrist. Attach the alligator clip to the ground stud on the inside lower right corner of the door (see Figure 1). ESD Strap Attachment to Ground Stud Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen the captive screws (either four or six) securing the electronics cover to the chassis (see Figure 2). 4 6.2.5 The solenoid valve assembly cable attaches to the TB1 connector on the power control board. To disconnect the cable, carefully pull it straight out from the board header Trace the cable back to the solenoid valve assembly. Open any cable clamp(s) holding the cable and remove the cable from the clamp(s). 6.3 Remove the existing solenoid valve assembly from the analyzer Locate the solenoid valve assembly (see Figure 4). Figure 4. Solenoid Valve Assembly There are nine fluid ports on the solenoid valve assembly. This assembly has three solenoid-actuated 3-way valves: valve 2 (V2), valve 3 (V3), and valve 4 (V4). Each valve has three ports: a common port (COM), a normally-closed port (NC), and a normally-open port (NO). All tubes that connect to these valves are labeled VX-YY (where X is the valve number of the assembly and YY is the port). In order to remove the assembly, you must disconnect all tubes. It is not usually necessary to use any tools to remove these connections. However, if you find any fitting that is too tight, use small pliers to loosen the fitting first. This port is attached to the tubing tee that is connected to port 4 of the injection valve. Unscrew the fitting at the injection valve Locate the V2-NO port (see Figure 5). The tube in this port is attached to the fluidics module. Unscrew the fitting Locate the V3-COM port (see Figure 5). The tube in this port is attached to the sample pump. Unscrew the fitting Locate the V3-NO port (see Figure 5). The tube in this port is attached to the waste tube assembly. Unscrew the fitting Locate the V4-COM port (see Figure 5). The tube in this port is attached to the pressure switch. Unscrew the fitting Locate the V4-NC port (see Figure 5). The tube in this port is attached to the fluidics module. Unscrew the fitting Locate the V4-NO port (see Figure 5). The tube in this port is attached to the pressure regulator. Unscrew the fitting Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the two captive screws securing the solenoid valve assembly to the analyzer chassis Slowly pull the solenoid valve assembly toward you. Slide the horseshoe grommet holding the valve cable out of the chassis (see Figure 6). Then continue to pull the valve assembly away from the chassis and place it on a clean, flat surface. Unscrew the fittings and place the tubing tee assembly aside (see Figure 6) Set the removed solenoid valve assembly aside. 6.4 Install the replacement solenoid valve assembly in the analyzer Locate the replacement solenoid valve assembly (see Figure 7). 7 6.4.2 Take the previously removed tubing tee assembly and attach it to ports V2-COM and V3-NC of the replacement valve, using finger-tight connections (see Figure 8). Pliers are not necessary. Replace the horseshoe grommet into its position in the chassis (see Figure 6); then finish sliding the assembly into position Using a Phillips screwdriver, tighten the two mounting screws to secure the assembly to the chassis Insert the tube attached to the tee assembly marked 'V1-4 into port 4 on the injection valve. Hold the tube securely in place and tighten finger-tight; pliers are not necessary Insert the tube from the fluidics module marked V2-NO' into port V2-NO of the Insert the tube from the sample pump marked V3-COM into port V3-COM of the Insert the tube from the waste tube assembly marked V3-NO into port V3-NO of the Insert the tube from the pressure switch marked V4-COM into port V4-COM of the Insert the tube from the fluidics module marked V4-NC into port V4-NC of the Insert the tube from the pressure regulator marked V4-NO into port V4-NO of the GE Analytical Instruments, Inc. 2005H Page 7 of 8 DIN Rev. 8 6.5 Connect the solenoid valve assembly to the power control board Route the valve assembly cable back through any cable clamp(s) that previously held it in place. Close the clamp(s) The cable's 12-pin terminal block is keyed and can only fit one way into the board connector. Orient the terminal block correctly and insert it into power control board connector TB1 (see Figure 3). Push the block straight in until it seats firmly. 6.6 Replace the cover over the electronics cage. Insert and tighten the mounting screws to secure the cover in place (see Figure 2). 6.7 Place the analyzer into operation Unclip the ESD wrist strap from the ground stud and remove the strap Close and latch the analyzer door Open the valve(s) to restore the flow of sample fluid into the analyzer from all source water inlet lines Turn on power to the analyzer by toggling the On/Off switch on the side of the analyzer to the I position.
