3 Did you know? Whole Grain bread surpassed white bread as the leading bread for sandwiches in 2008, and continues to be used in approximately 31% of sandwiches, compared to 21% for white bread. SOURCE: NPD GROUP S NATIONAL EATING TRENDS DATABASE 2012 What is a whole grain? Whole grains or foods made from them contain all the essential parts and naturally occurring nutrients of the entire grain seed. These whole grains retain the bran, germ and the The following, when consumed in a form including the bran, germ and endosperm, are examples of generally accepted whole grain foods and flours.* endosperm as opposed to refined grains that keep only the endosperm. If the grain has been processed (for example, cracked, crushed, rolled, extruded and/or cooked), the food product should deliver approximately the same rich balance of nutrients that are found in the original grain seed. Amaranth Barley Buckwheat Corn (including whole cornmeal & popcorn) Millet Oats (including oatmeal) Quinoa Rice (both brown rice & colored rice) Rye Sorghum (also called milo) Teff Triticale Wild rice Wheat (including varieties such as spelt, emmer, farro, einkorn, Kamut *, durum & forms such as bulgur, cracked wheat and wheatberries) The Whole Grain Stamps The Whole Grains Stamp was launched to create a familiar packaging symbol to help consumers select and buy whole grain products. The eye-catching black and gold Stamp makes finding whole grains simple. Each stamped product guarantees consumers at least half a serving of whole grains. The Whole Grain Stamp is identifiable at a glance and offers a consistent, trustworthy beacon to consumers across products and categories. There are two main stamps: Products containing at least 8 grams of whole grain ingredients per labeled serving qualify to use the Whole Grain Stamp. Products containing at least 16 grams of whole grain ingredients per labeled serving and in which ALL the grains are whole grains may use the 100% Whole Grain Stamp. How can Corbion Caravan help you set the stamp on your products? Corbion Caravan became a member of the Whole Grains Council in By using Corbion Caravan whole grain products you may qualify to use the whole grain stamps. Step 1: Choose from one of our current whole grain products or request a custom Whole Grain formulation for use that is proprietary to you. Step 2: Send us your end use bowl formula for approval by the Whole Grains Council. Step 3: Sign a letter of agreement confirming your acceptance of our usage terms. Step 4: Use the stamp on your packaging and merchandising to promote whole grains in your business. 2 WHOLE GRAIN SOLUTIONS WHOLE GRAIN SOLUTIONS 3
