10 W orld Econom ics and Politics No. 11, 2005 Abstracts Explor ing the Backgrounds of IR Scholars W ang Y izhou( 1) Area Stud ies in Ch ina: Ach ievem en ts, D ef ic ienc ies, and Prospects Tang Sh ip ingzhang J iecao X iaoyang( 7) This article p rovides a survey of China s area studies ( and its broader international studies) from the perspective that institutional arrangements influence the pursuit of know ledge. It emphasizes that many p roblem s associated w ith Chi2 na s area studies can be traced back to the institutional arrangements governing our scholarly comm unity, rather than to cultural factors. The author therefore argues that to make area studies a respectable academ ic field in China we must p ro2 mote institutional changes in four crucial respects. The Ea st A sian Secur ity M odel: Coex istence, Para llelism, or Replacem en t? W ang Fan( 16) After the Cold W ar, there have been various security models coexisting in East A sia. East A sian security is closely related to the interaction of and changes in these security models. The dilemma of East A sian security lies in the dom i2 nance of the traditional security model, which takes the form of alliances. A lthough the new security model in East A sia has encountered difficulties in institutional construction, it has already shown great vitality and a bright future, such as in the A sian Regional Forum (ARF) and the Northeast A sia cooperative security. The author concludes that the core is2 sue for East A sian security developm ent relates to the relationship between the old and new security models. A s a histori2 cal and realistic issue, whether this relationship can be solved w ill decide the future of East A sian security.
