1 How to Use Trimble Nomad This how-to is designed to show you how to use the Trimble Nomad. Before reading this please read, Best Practices for Trimble Nomad.pdf and How to Assemble the Trimble Nomad both found at ***Note: The Trimble Nomad is a shared resource. Please do not use it to store personal information. The Nomad should be charging when not in use. 1) Press the Power button to turn the Nomad on. 2) There are two ways to view the battery life left on the Nomad. a. To view remaining battery life as a percent, go to Start -> Settings -> System -> System Information -> Battery. 1

2 b. There are two ways to view remaining battery life as a bar. One way to get there is to go to Start -> Settings -> System -> Power -> Battery. The second way to get there is to tap the battery icon on the main page. 3) To change the brightness, go to Start -> Settings -> System -> Backlight -> Brightness. 4) The Trimble Nomad has a camera built in. To take pictures using the Nomad go to Start -> Program -> Pictures & Videos -> Camera. If you click on Menu, you can change the brightness, the balance, size of the image. When you are ready to take a picture, hit the Enter button. 2

3 5) The Trimble Nomad also has a built in bar code scanner. There are two ways you can use the bar code scanner. If the scan fails, try moving either closer or farther away from the bar code. The laser must cover hit both ends of the bar code. a. To view the decoded data and the type of scan code it is, go to Start -> Settings -> System -> Scanner Setup -> Scan Now. You can also change the settings of the scanner here. b. To view the decoded data and save it, open up a program like Notes, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Excel. We will use Microsoft Word (Start -> Office Mobile -> Word Mobile). Then pick the document that you want to save the information in, or pick a new document. After it loads tap on the up arrow near the keyboard icon, then tap on Barcode Scanner -> Scan. Or you can just tap the curved arrow button to scan. 3

4 6) To turn on/off the Wifi or Bluetooth tap the network icon near the top, then tap on Wireless Manager. You can either turn them both on/off by tapping All or you can click on them individually to turn them on/off. 7) To turn on the GPS, open any one of these applications: SatViewer, ArcPad, GPSController, or Terrasync. Then from there you can activate the GPS. To open the applications go to Start -> Programs. *Note: All Trimble-related programs on the Nomad are designed to automatically go to SIRF mode when their programs are used. And this setting remains even after the program ends or the GPS is turned off. This makes the NMEA based programs unable to use the GPS afterwards. If you want to use a NMEA base program after using a SIRF program, shutdown the unit and then turn it back on (Read step 11 on how to go to Shutdown mode). SatViewer is also by default NMEA based, however, you can change its settings to SIRF. SatViewer ArcPad GPS Controller Terrasync 4

5 8) If the screen becomes unresponsive to stylus or you believe that the stylus touch is inaccurate, then you might have to realign the screen. Hold the Power button down till a countdown appears. Then tap Align and follow the on-screen instructions. 9) To transfer data from the Nomad to a computer, first make sure that the computer has activesync installed on it. After that connect the Trimble Nomad s USB cord to the Nomad then to the computer. On your computer navigate to My Computer, you should see an icon that says Mobile Device, click on that and will take you to the Nomad. If this activesync doesn t work try a different USB port. 10) To shutdown the Nomad, hold the Power button down until the countdown screen shows. Then tap Shutdown. Keep in mind that shutdown will delete any unsaved data and the GPS parameters will reset to their default settings. 5
