1 Interview Tips and Resume Examples Student Financial Services Federal Work-Study Program G eorgia Perimeter College Your resume is a most important way to introduce yourself to your potential employer. The resume helps the hiring company determine if you will be selected for an interview. This document provides tips and examples to help you with this process. Various scholarly and career articles inspired this text of information. 555 N. Indian Creek Drive Clarkston, GA (fax)
2 CONTENTS On pages 2-3 The Resume Do you have previous work experience? If the answer is yes, Freda Jaguar s resume will guide you. If the answer is no, Louise Tiger s resume will guide you. On pages 4-5 Preparation Attire for Men and Women On page 6 Sample Thank You Letter Page 1 of 6

5 Preparation Research the company/organization and know the expectations of the duties. Good places to research: your public library, business sections of magazines and newspapers, your prospective employer s company literature, the company s Web site Be Prepared to Answer Questions: You may be asked about: o your experience and skills o your willingness to learn o your personality, professionalism and commitment o how you fit into the organization o specific questions Get clear directions to the interview site and arrive on time or early for your meeting. Attire for Men and Women Suit: A two piece matched suit is always the best and safest choice. But what if the job is in a non-suit-wearing work environment: Even if you would or could wear jeans on the job, or the work environment is outdoors and very non-suit, wearing a suit to the interview shows you take the interview seriously as a professional meeting. Dressing well is a compliment to the person(s) with whom you meet. If you think the industry in which you're interviewing would frown on a suit, or the interview will involve going to a work site where a suit would be inappropriate, look for advice through professional organizations, your professors who have been employed in that industry, and/or by asking the employer directly and politely. Conservative colors / fabric: Navy, dark gray, and black are safe. Avoid the extreme colors. Solids or very subtle weave patterns or plaids (the kind that look solid across a room) are safest. Details: Everything should be clean and well pressed. Carefully inspect clothes for tags, dangling threads, etc. Page 4 of 6
6 Grooming Tips Hair: Should be clean and neat. Shoes: Should be in polished condition. Make sure heels are not worn. Details: No missing buttons, no lint; and don't forget to remove external tags and tacking stitches from new clothes. Hands: Clean fingernails. Fit: Clothes should fit properly. Smell: Perfume or cologne should be used sparingly or not at all. No odors in clothes. Do not smell like smoke. Pad folios: Preferred over a bulky briefcase. A small briefcase is also appropriate. But if you have no reason to carry a briefcase. Book bags: Leave it at home for an on-site interview. For an on-campus interview, you can leave it in the waiting area. Page 5 of 6
