Fellow Canadians, Canada Day concludes the eleven-day Celebrate Canada festivities that began on June 21 with the National Aboriginal Day: a tribute to the heritage, cultures and unique contributions made by Canada s First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. On Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24) Francophone Canadians celebrated their cultural pride and rich heritage. On June 27 Canadian Multiculturalism Day celebrates our diversity and respect for people of all backgrounds and cultures who are part of our society and have contributed to making Canada a pluralistic society and a national community united in diversity and driven by the desire to build a better future. This year Canada takes the world s centre-stage. At Vancouver 2010 we welcomed the world to our country - with the hospitality that has always distinguished our people - showcasing our spectacular landscapes and dynamic cities, our excellence in business and technology. And proudly shone in the winter sports at which we excel! Consular section July 4 th, America's 234 th Independence Day Thank you again to Easy Milano for giving me this opportunity to reach out to all Americans and other English speaking communities here in Milan. It has been a very busy year for me, the U.S. Consulate, and the U.S. administration under President Barack Obama. The president s first year and a half in office has been unprecedented. He said in his inaugural address that America was ready to lead once more and in his first year he has done just that. He has built a stronger relationship with the world, opened up new opportunities for peace and progress, and strengthened our partnerships to deal with global threats and concerns. His willingness to tackle the toughest foreign policy challenges has re-established positive American leadership and fostered a new spirit of hope and opportunity to the world s problems. Something that all Americans can be proud of. We at the U.S. Consulate General in Milan have been engaged in many aspects of the administration s agenda. I have been very fortunate in my first year and a half to have traveled to virtually every corner of our consular district. From Trieste to Torino, I have been impressed with the positive collaboration between Americans and our Italian counterparts. Whether educators and researchers, military and law-enforcement officers, engineers and entrepreneurs, or just business partners or friends, the partnerships between Americans and northern Italians in every area are strong and growing. It is these connections at the institutional and personal level that makes the relationship between our two countries so strong. As we all celebrate our successes on this July 4th we should be mindful of the continuing challenges both our nations still face. The worldwide economic recession remains a prime concern, the threat of global terrorism has not subsided, and our two countries remain committed (along with our NATO allies) to finishing our mission in Afghanistan. In America, we are facing the worst ecological disaster in our history with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But through it all we continue to remain committed to our principles and our values which have served us so well for 234 years.
