2 Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Certificate Program Course Length 11.5 weeks (full time Monday - Friday: morning, afternoon and/or evening) Course Start Date The program typically starts in the Fall and Winter terms. Dates are determined by the MDRT Program Advisory Committee. 3 Pre-requisites required prior to applying to the program 1. English Assessments Proof of English Language Proficiency Applicants are required to do either the ABE or CLBPT language assessment at the Broadway campus NOTE: Scores valid for one year If your original high school education was completed in Canada and includes academic English 12 you will be asked to complete the Adult Basic Education Assessments in Reading and Writing (ABE). ABE assessment required scores: 60 on Reading Assessment on Writing Assessment 061 on Writing sample An ABE assessment schedule is published every month and includes day and evening assessment times If your original high school education is not from a Canadian institution you will be asked to complete the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT). CLBPT assessment required scores: 8 in speaking 7 in listening 7 in reading 6 in writing Student must make an appointment for the CLBPT assessment IN PERSON (NO appointments by phone). You must have your PICTURE ID when you make your appointment. 4 2. Proof of High School Graduation or equivalent Students must show proof of Grade 12 graduation from a Canadian high school, or GED. Applicants whose educational documents are not from a Canadian or American institution must have a basic Canadian evaluation from the ICES department at BCIT. The International Credential Evaluation Service can provide this basic evaluation. For an evaluation application and current fee information, contact ICES at or 3. Interpersonal Communication Skills for Health Care Workers (MSKL 1104) MSKL 1104 consists of four Saturday classes from 09:00-16:30 hours at the downtown campus. This course provides broad and practical interpersonal and teamwork skills that will assist participants to develop stronger communication, decision-making and assertiveness skills for the workplace. Topics include conflict resolution, teamwork, leadership skills, personal motivation and empowerment in self-education. Students in this course apply their knowledge and skills in small group to develop and refine their effective verbal and non-verbal communications using effective methods in individual and group situations to make systematic decisions and win/win decisions. Acceptable equivalent: Interpersonal Communication Skills Course (24 hours or more that includes the above listed topics) from a recognized College. Please check with the program assistant or program coordinator first for approval. Please submit your transcript with your application if this course is taken outside of VCC. Medical Terminology (OACP 1108) Taken within five years of application date OACP 1108 consists of ten Tuesday evening classes from 18:00 to 21:00 hours at the downtown campus. This course is for those wishing to work in the technology/laboratory or related health field, learn the basics of anatomy, physiology, pathology, body structure and functions. Explore disease processes, investigations, treatments and introduction to surgical terms and practical applications. Word parts (stems, prefixes, suffixes and abbreviations) are covered as well as pronunciation and spelling. Acceptable equivalent: Medical Terminology Course (30 hours or more that includes the above listed topics) from a recognized College or from your District School Board. Please check with the program assistant or program coordinator first for approval. Please submit your transcript with your application if this course is taken outside of VCC. 5 Application and Waitlist Information To Apply Please submit the completed application form including all required documentation along with an application fee of $30 in person or by mail to: VCC Continuing Studies MDRT West Pender Street Vancouver, BC V6B 1S9 Your application will be reviewed only when all your documents have been received. Please call the Program Assistant at ext: 8672 with any questions regarding the application process. Waitlist Process When all of your pre-requisites have been completed and your application approved, your name is placed on the Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Waitlist. The waitlist process is firstcome first-served. You will be notified by phone or when there is an available seat in the Medical Device Reprocessing Technician intake. This course may be offered anytime of the year, depending on the needs of the health care industry. There can be a lengthy wait due to the small class size (approximately students per class). The current waitlist averages months. Notification of class and Tuition payment Students are usually notified with a seat offer approximately three months prior to the start date of the class. Full tuition payment is required upon seat acceptance. Tuition fee is subject to change without notice. If You Decline Your Seat You will be given two (2) opportunities to accept a seat in the course. 1 st Decline You have one opportunity to postpone your start date to the next intake, and you will retain your wait list position 2 nd Decline Your name will be removed from the wait list. **We reserve the right to cancel, postpone or otherwise modify a course due to inadequate registration or other situations beyond our control. You will be notified by phone and receive a full refund if we cancel the course. ** 4

Please note the following: 1. Hepatitis B: done through your family doctor or public health clinic. Three vaccinations over a period of six months 2. Recent negative TB Skin Test: (within one year of entering the program) Call the BC Centre for Disease Control at , or check with your local public health clinic. 3. Diphtheria and Tetanus: done through your family doctor or public health clinic. (Every 10 years.) 4. Flu shot: done through your family doctor or public health clinic (done every year, available in October) 5.
