4 Our courses What is a Cambridge Medical English course? Our five-day Medical English courses include 30 hours of study. Lessons begin on a Monday morning and finish on a Friday afternoon. Our courses are specifically designed to: } Help give you confidence as a new doctor in the NHS } Help give you confidence when communicating with other doctors and patients } Help you be the serious professional that you are, with a confident command of English for that crucial hospital interview Our courses take place in the heart of Cambridge, one of England s most beautiful, historic and academically renowned cities. You will study in a prestigious Cambridge University college or, if this is not possible, at one of the city s leading hotels. What you will learn } We know you have a good level of English so we will not waste your time or money by teaching you General English. We have specialist staff and a course structure designed so that you can focus on the language you need for your successful Medical career. Your first lesson will cover the basic language of the body, health and illnesses, progressing to the more complex language of taking a history, prescribing medicine and discussing treatments. There is a great emphasis on pronunciation, because this is the key to communication. In order to succeed you have to be able to speak Medical language correctly and confidently. Patients do not trust doctors whom they cannot understand. Remember: Hospital employers only give that precious job to the candidate who communicates the best.

5 Throughout every lesson, you will be taught the Medical language you will use as a professional doctor and the layman s language you need when communicating with patients. Some of the things you will learn: } Body parts and basic body problems } Language when interviewing a patient } How to describe symptoms to a patient } The language of pain } Talking about improving, recovery and deterioration } Giving bad news } Taking a Medical history and writing notes } Reading a history } Medication and prescribing } Key language for the operating theatre We also discuss looking for a job and CV writing for that job, as well as the NHS and GMC, reading/writing scientific papers, and current ethical issues. Increase your chances at PLAB 2 PLAB 2 tests communication skills as well as Medical knowledge. The examiners look for language skills and how well you communicate with colleagues and patients. You may have to demonstrate how to explain a diagnosis, investigation and treatment, give bad news, give advice and take a patient history. } Our courses cover all these elements } Our courses teach you the language for successful communication with patients

6 Your teachers Our tutors and guest speakers include Hospital Trust Managers, Consultant Surgeons, Consultant Physicians, GPs and nurses. These are the key professionals who can teach you about the NHS structure and Good Medical Practice (another essential requirement for PLAB preparation), as well as GMC application, the BMA and malpractice insurance (why you need it and how to get it). The course fee The course fee includes: } All learning materials so that you do not have to worry about bringing any with you. We provide books, pens, pencils, pencil cases, erasers, paper and folders } Lunch for five days } Tea, coffee and cakes during the day } If you book college accommodation, breakfast is also included Accommodation When available, you will have the choice of staying at the Cambridge University college where your Medical English course will be taught, or in a Cambridge hotel. We can discuss all the options with you when you make your booking. The opportunity to learn and stay in a historic Cambridge University college is truly incredible. You will impress your family and friends and amaze them with photographs of famous gothic architecture, extraordinary libraries, grand halls and glorious dining rooms. Should you stay in one of our hand-picked Cambridge hotels, you may have the opportunity to bring a second guest for a small charge. Getting to Cambridge Cambridge is approximately one hour by train from London King s Cross station. The main Eurostar terminal is at St Pancras station next to King s Cross. There are also regular trains from Stansted Airport to Cambridge. There is a frequent coach service from all main airports, including Stansted, Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow. You can buy your ticket on the coach and pay with cash or credit card.
