10 FAA Academy The Challenge The Academy provides training for 3 main occupations: Air Traffic Controllers Maintenance & Electronics Personnel Aviation Safety Inspectors FY-12 Hiring Air Traffic Controllers 981 Maintenance & Electronics Personnel 250 Aviation Safety Inspectors 320 Common Strategies Across Occupations Headquarters determines hiring requirements and funding levels FAA Academy is responsible for determining how to meet those requirements within budget constraints Applicant pools adequate for each occupation at this time 10
11 Focus on Air Traffic Controller Hiring FAA uses models to forecast staffing and develop an annual controller hiring plan FAA staffs to traffic As traffic levels change, so do controller staffing needs Air Traffic declined by 23% since 2000 Forecast to rise slowly through 2020 Ongoing hiring and staffing is monitored and the hiring and training plans are adjusted accordingly FAA has hired more than 8,000 new controllers and technicians over the past 5 years 1/21/2010 F E D E R A L A V I A T I O N A D M I N I S T R A T I O N A I R T R A F F I C O R G A N I Z A T I O N 11
