49 History: Māori education I do not advocate for the Natives a refined education or high mental culture. if we take account of the position they are likely to hold for many years to come in the social scale.. they are better calculated by nature to get their living by manual than mental labour (Harry Taylor, 1862) so far as the Department [of Education] is concerned, there is no encouragement given to [Māori] boys who wish to enter the learned professions (W. W. Bird, 1915) white teachers [are encouraging Māori] pupils to carry arithmetic to a stage far beyond their present needs or their possible future needs (T. B. Strong, 1933)
