3 Industrial water and effluent treatment in India - Market study and opportunity assessment Rapid industrialisation and urbanisation has been continuously increasing the demand for water. Although 75 per cent of earth s surface is covered by water, shrinking potable water supplies continue to be an area of concern. In order to ensure clean water for their population and economic activities, governments and industries will have to spend significantly in the coming years. Though under-rated, being an irreplaceable commodity, water sector presents the next big opportunity for infrastructure companies, technology providers, contracting firms and investors alike. In India, almost 70 per cent of the current consumption is driven by agricultural activities, with per cent being each consumed by industries and municipal usage. In future, we see growth in demand to be driven by the industrial segment, followed by the municipal segment.
