METSÄ WOOD MULTI-STOREY SYSTEM
For effective production of multi-storey buildings and a pleasant living environment With tightening energy-efficiency requirements and climate change growing in importance, it is prudent to consider the choice of building materials with care. Wood offers an ecologically sustainable building material that makes buildings airtight, aesthetically pleasing, and resident-friendly, with good indoor air quality and flexibility for changes in physical layout. The industrial manufacture of wooden structures has advanced by leaps and bounds, giving Metsä Wood full confidence in being able to offer developers and builders a system that efficiently produces a wooden multi-storey building. Projects proceed more quickly and smoothly: the total building time is reduced because the building frame can be erected quickly with prefabricated elements. With the 2011 fire-safety provisions, the Finnish regulations became standardised and independent of building material. This has created new possibilities for the use of wood also in multi-storey construction, because it can now be used as a frame material in three- to eightstorey residential and office buildings of Class P2. 2 METSÄ WOOD MULTI-STOREY SYSTEM
A wooden multi-storey building a desirable and pleasant living environment Experience of wooden multi-storey buildings in Finland shows that residents are very satisfied with their choice. According to those living in wooden buildings, modern wood architecture has been a significant factor in their choice of housing type. Wood architecture is esteemed as contributing to a pleasant environment, and the aesthetic value of wood is clear this material is perceived as improving the ambiance and supporting Finnish well-being. Customers still hope for more: increased use of wood for interior surfaces, to enhance the atmosphere. One thing is clear: residents consider the harmonious character in areas with wooden housing, achieved through architecture and the concept of area development based on a land-use agreement, to be extremely good in comparison with their earlier residences. In general, areas of wooden buildings are highly rated. In 2011, Tampere University of Technology and Oulu University of Applied Sciences carried out a resident satisfaction survey with six companies that manage wooden multi-storey blocks of flats in Ylöjärvi, Helsinki, and Lahti, Finland. The buildings contained 158 flats, in total, and there were 118 responses to the survey. Key results of the resident satisfaction survey Roughly 97 per cent of the respondents knew when moving in that the load-bearing frame and façade of the building were wooden. The wooden structure had an impact on the choice of residence for 54 per cent of respondents. About 84 per cent of respondents indicated that they prefer or greatly prefer living in a wooden multi-storey apartment building over their previous accommodation, and 89 per cent stated that they were content or very content with their current home and housing. In total, 72 per cent of respondents described themselves as content or very content with the sound isolation of the housing. Finally, 62 per cent of respondents were content or very content with the ventilation and indoor air quality in their flat, with 64 per cent finding the ventilation to operate appropriately. 4 A system that gives designers and builders a helping hand 4 METSÄ WOOD MULTI-STOREY SYSTEM
In Finland, the Metsä Wood Multi-Storey System is delivered to the customer as a system sale, with installation included. Metsä Wood designs the building-specific wooden structures and delivers the frame with intermediate floors and roofs installed and with the exterior walls vapour barrier sealed. The work that remains for the construction company employs considerably lighter equipment than that in traditional multi-storey construction. The construction company does not need to be a specialist in wooden construction, because Metsä Wood as the supplier is an expert in designing and supplying wooden structures. This opens up possibilities for smaller construction companies. The strong core of the Metsä Wood Multi-Storey System consists of a Kerto beam-and-post frame made by gluing together veneers of Finnish spruce. A wide Kerto panel is used to stiffen the frame, which means that the traditional steel and concrete bracings are no longer necessary. Intermediate floors and the roof use KertoRipa elements. The elements are prefabricated and include thermal insulation, a weatherproof layer, and (if needed) gypsum plasterboard. The elements can be prepared with penetrations at the factory, which saves time at the site. Lightweight exterior wall elements with windows and balcony doors pre-installed at the factory complete the system. The choice of King Panel cladding provides an impressive and pleasing appearance. Panel cladding can be prefabricated, but masonry or rendering can also be executed on the building site. The development of the Multi-Storey System has utilised years of experience with the Kerto-Ripa elements, which have proved themselves in intermediate floors and roofs for a variety of residential and office buildings. METSÄ WOOD MULTI-STOREY SYSTEM 5
The Kerto beam-and-post frame is uniquely adaptive The great advantage of a Kerto beam-and-post frame in a multi-storey building project is that it is easily adapted. This makes design flexible, as the structure enables change in, for example, partition walls while the building is in use. In a basic configuration, the span of intermediate floors and the beam-and-post frame is a 7.5 metres at its longest. Wooden elements in intermediate floors and roofs The intermediate floors and roofs of the Metsä Wood Multi-Storey System are executed in a cost-effective, light, and durable way via prefabricated Kerto-Ripa elements. Intermediate floor and exterior wall joint. Advantages of the Kerto-Ripa element in a wooden multi-storey building The weight of the structure is only 0.5 to 0.8 kn/m². The element enables 60-minute fire-resistance. The roof element is also available for a passive house. The product has European technical approval ETA07/0029 and CE marking. It meets the regulatory requirements for structurally glued load-bearing structures. The Kerto-Ripa intermediate floor element comes complete with mineral wool, Kerto ribs, Kerto panel, and Kerto bottom flange. Impact sound isolation, plaster casting, and lower surface battening (including boarding) are installed on the site. Sprinkler, electrical, and HVAC systems can actually be incorporated into the element, between the Kerto ribs. 6 METSÄ WOOD MULTI-STOREY SYSTEM
King Panel on the façade of a wooden multi-storey building in Viikki, Helsinki. Façade made of impressive and durable King Panel The wide-form King Panel, made from Finnish spruce, suits the façade of a wooden multi-storey building the best. It is made of King Beam glulam by means of a special method. King Panel allows for a continuous façade surface of up to 12 metres quickly and cost-efficiently. Fixing can be done from the top or as concealed panel-fixing. In the Multi- Storey System, the panel is attached to the exterior wall element at the factory. Roof and exterior wall joint. METSÄ WOOD MULTI-STOREY SYSTEM 7
Fast installation weather-protection as quickly as within a week The roofing of a three-storey building can be completed within roughly one week. Prefabricated rain-protected elements are delivered to the construction site in installation order. Metsä Wood s team installs the frame and elements with craftsmanship born of experience. Fast installation is particularly beneficial in winter, as it keeps the building protected from snowfall. No material is wasted, and the construction site is kept tidy. 1. Concrete foundation 2. 10 Flexible design The Kerto beam-and-post frame enables flexible spatial design, and building management systems can be enclosed conveniently within the slabs of the intermediate floor. Prefabricated structures and detailed planning for joints speed up the design. 3D modelling is used for structures, down to the screw and nail joints. Modelling in a joint product data model involving collaboration with the customer speeds up the design process and makes changes easier to carry out. Designs can be rendered consistent with each other through data modelling. Simulations can take into consideration the energy and CO 2ekvt objectives for the project. Thanks to its workability, wood as a building material enables varied and original architecture. 10 METSÄ WOOD MULTI-STOREY SYSTEM
Advantages of the Metsä Wood Multi- Storey System A wooden multi-storey building is a sensible choice with many advantages for the various parties involved in the project. All parties benefit from the fast construction, flexibility for change, and ecological sustainability of the Multi-Storey System. Developer: Wooden multi-storey buildings provide an excellent investment in ecologically sustainable construction. The fast project cycle enables earlier returns.
