2 Survey and Study of Telecommunications Standardization in the Asia-Pacific Region (Version 7) Interoperability Experiments in the Region GSC-5, August 1999 TTC Task Force on Standardization Activities in Asia and the Pacific 1 History of the Task Force The TTC Task Force on Standardization Activities in Asia and the Pacific was organized in Purpose: to strengthen standardization-related cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region Past Surveys conducted by this Task Force Standardization organizations and activities (1993,1994) Standards-making system (1995,1996) Standards information network (1997,1998) The Report of this year (1999) Interoperability experiments of telecommunication systems 2-2 -

3 Background Importance of interconnectivity and interoperability (IC/IO) has become pronouced in this region as, Competition among telecommunications carriers has become commonplace, and Network operators and end-users have started procuring telecommunications equipment from a range of different manufacturers. In light of the above circumstances, this report addresses: The current state of IC/IO experiments in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, with some additional information on US examples A brief summary and discussion 3 Status of Efforts in Asia-Pacific Countries Five IC/IO Activities in the region were surveyed with respect to: Objectives, history, types of standards being tested, test methodology, test facilities and source of funding, unresolved issues, cooperation with other organizations, future plans, etc. (1) Promotion Conference of Harmonization of Advanced Telecommunication systems (HATS, Japan) (2) Protocol Engineering Center (PEC, Korea) (3) Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network (SingAREN, Singapore) (4) Testbed Environment for Malaysian Multimedia Applications Network (TEMAN, Malaysia) (5) Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC, India) 4-3 -

4 HATS (Japan) Promotion Conference of Harmonization of Advanced Telecommunication Systems Established 1988 Funded by annual membership fee IO tests between products from different vendors Results fed back on ITU-T, ISO and TTC standards About 700 types of equipment have been tested.
