3 Introduction PRIME Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education. The SME Education Foundation is committed to changing the lives of our nation s youth by introducing them to the possibilities of a career in Manufacturing. This industry has created opportunities for millions of American s, yet the image portrayed over many decades has failed to match the opportunity. The most critical change needed is to improve the image of manufacturing, followed by providing the educational support necessary to create contributors for our industry. The most direct way of changing the image will come from the participation of mentors and their engagement within the classroom. The SME-EF in partnership with the SME Chapters and membership groups affiliated geographically to our PRIME School locations will serve as the mentor pools. Together these groups will develop knowledge sharing and supportive relationships with a focus on the enhancement of the student s education and knowledge of manufacturing.

4 For the Students All Junior & Senior class students currently enrolled in SME-EF PRIME classrooms are eligible to be part of this mentoring program. The effectiveness of this program depends on the active participation of both the mentor and the student. Research findings over several decades, remains consistent and is represented by the following benefits of mentoring relationships: Increases the students communication skills Helps the student grow in competence and identify potential career paths Establishes high performance standards and goals and stimulates personal motivation Enhances career development Helps students get a real world view of industry Increases coursework satisfaction and allows the students to relate curriculum to everyday life Student Commitment Checklist I will participate in initial face to face meeting with mentor at PRIME School I will commit to dressing appropriately when meeting or addressing your mentor or other industry connections I will participate in SME Chapter activities, projects and group events when appropriate I will complete classroom projects on time or early I will be open to instruction and advice I will be a problem solver I will document and share my in class success as well as any extracurricular work related activities with my mentor I will communicate with mentor via a minimum of once per week I will be on time and prompt for meetings and group gatherings I commit to participate in special events or professional opportunities offered by your mentor I will practice good listening skills I will ask relevant questions of your mentor I commit to take responsibility for my own growth and success Request a letter of recommendation from your mentor at the end of the program Support and collaborate with other students and mentors within the PRIME program I will maintain a level of professionalism and confidentiality with your mentor By signing and dating this document, I herby enroll myself in the SME-EF PRIME Student Group Mentoring Program as a student who is requesting a mentor. The opportunity to share expertise, as well as the ability to identify and develop new talent can enhance your own career and the future of your business. Mentoring also provides the opportunities most employers rarely see to acquire a fresh perspective on the future views of their workforce. A mentor participating in the SME-EF PRIME program is a trusted and experienced advisor who has a direct interest in the development and education of a student who is interested in learning more about the manufacturing profession. The mentor often assumes multiple roles while contributing to a relationship of shared interests between themselves and the student. Benefits of mentoring: Gain increased recognition and respect from others in the profession Expands your network to other mentors and students Contribute to the development of future colleagues and partners Develops additional communication skills Improves job satisfaction Provides the window of gain by giving Forces you to be the example and thereby grows integrity Mentor Criteria: SME Member or Industry Leader Currently employed in the manufacturing industry Registered with SME-EF as qualified mentor Clear from National Sex Offender Registry Well respected in current role within industry and organization FAQ s How much of my time will this really take? Be a mentor in this program will require at least two hours a month minimum. The benefits received from your volunteer activity will depend on your level of commitment. Just like any other volunteer role, you get back what you put in! How do I know if I m qualified to be a mentor? By honestly completing the mentor checklist, registering with SME-EF online, and then passing the PRIME School background check, you will be notified of your eligibility into the program.

6 Mentor Commitment Checklist Completed PRIME School background checks and register with SME-EF online. I will communicate weekly with both classroom instructor and student being mentored I will serve as a resource to assist my student in classroom projects throughout the school year I will commit to being a good listener and motivator I will commit to becoming part of the students professional network I will support and collaborate with the PRIME instructor I will actively recruit other possible mentors into the PRIME program Attended mentor orientation program hosted by local SME chapter and PRIME School I will commit to participate in classroom activities agreed upon by my student and instructor I will inform my student of trends and happenings within industry I will invite my student to at least on corporate meeting or event agreed upon by the student and instructor during the school year I will provide letters of recommendation to a deserving student I will monitor my student s classroom progress and provide guidance and structured input when needed I will register online with SME-EF and keep my contact information up to date I understand by signing this checklist I am making a commitment to enhance the life of a student. 7 For the School The SME Education Foundation and its associated partners, including each of SME s Member Units and corporate supporters will strive to insure the best possible outcomes for each of the students enrolled in the PRIME Program Mentoring Program. Keeping our efforts focused on supporting the work of the educational institution, the classroom instructor and students is our first priority. We will not interrupt, interfere or use the classroom for self promotion. The classroom instructor will serve as the direct line of contact for any activities outside of the mentorship program and handle all special requests between the student and mentor. SME-EF and its affiliates cannot maintain any liability affiliated with the work of the volunteers, as such the educational institution ordained as a PRIME School must collect and insure proper identity and conduct any necessary background check information. The administration at the PRIME location, must immediately notify SME-EF and the local volunteer organization of any issues regarding the mentor, student or program activities.
