It was just gorgeous and the views were fabulous. Another round of Anniversaries and Birthdays today. John Musser celebrating his birthday and 41 st wedding anniversary this month and Fely Livaudais celebrating her 21 st wedding anniversary as well. We had an excellent speaker this morning focusing on the story of the Humpbacks in the islands. More on our speaker further into the newsletter. Jon Schlobohm had a very inspiring message for his Rotary Minute highlighting what District 5000 is doing in support of the Japan Disaster Relief Fund. There is still time for donations to be received if you would like to be included with our clubs other donations. I m off island for next week s meeting and I need all of you to prepare yourself because Mr. Ron Capanash, Past President, will assume the President s responsibilities next week and we all know what that could mean if you let him get out of control. Ended at the end of the Civil War Whaling crews were big small business in Hawaii No interest in whales in Hawaii before 1968 in any media Flip came to Maui in 1979 to make an IMAX film Humpback whales were on the edge of extinction only 2000 worldwide. Father went on to shoot underwater footage for films Told story about where he lived with young grad students moving to Maui in stories have been written for National Geographic since then. Now Maui shines as the best whale place in the world. New story how are we going to deal with all the Humpback Whales issues with whales what they eat, story of one whale in New Zealand. One day after tsunami $150K donated by Rotarians through D5000 and RI. Ed shared a story about his nephew being in the tsunami are up on a hill for 3-1/2 days and how he evacuated though the help of Rotary Club in the tsunami area. $2100 is allocated so for still time to donate to this matching grant fund.
