Building Information Modeling - BIM Presented by Jim Miller, Dennis Rodriguez, John Przybyla May 3,
Building Information Modeling Introduction (Jim Miller) What s BIM and why is it important? The multiple values of BIM (Dennis Rodriguez) BIM for asset management (John) Development of the BIM standards (John Przybyla) The BIM technology (Jim) Questions & Comments 2
Introduction: What s BIM? 3
Introduction: What s BIM? A 3D building design Foresee conflicts in the design before they occur. Quantities and properties of the building s components. A shared resource for information about a facility basis for decisions during its entire life-cycle conception to demolition. NBIMS (National BIM Standard)
What does that mean? A Soylent Green moment: BIM is data! 5
Speakers John Przybyla is a Senior VP for Woolpert in Dayton, OH. Professional Engineer in 5 states Certified GIS Professional. His experience encompasses over 75 organizations through 30 years in the profession, including local governments, institutions, airports, and the Federal government. He currently serves as the Chair of the BIM-GIS Integration committee of the buildingsmartalliance. Dennis Rodriguez is from AECOM assisting DEN with design and deployment of its new BIM infrastructure. This is a crucial milestone in our new South Terminal Redevelopment Program and is a partner to the new EGIS/eALP effort also being undertaken with AECOM and Woolpert. Jim Miller is the Director of Enterprise Architecture at DEN. He is the Technologies Program Manager for implementations with the Planning and Development Division for the South Terminal Redevelopment Program and the BIM and EGIS/eALP initiatives. 6

Theoretical BIM Project Savings Curve Conception Stage Project Delivery Selection Stage Design Stage Construction Documents Stage Procurement Stage Execution Stage Utilization Stage Optimized approach with virtual modeling and analysis with reduced change orders & delivery time and lower operating and sustainment costs Typical approach failing to do routine maintenance and having to replace items earlier and more often Typical design/build approach with required maintenance Closure Stage The savings we are currently experiencing with faster delivery and fewer change orders The yet untapped $avings NIBS 2006,2007, all rights reserved
Should We Use BIM As a Spatial Data Repository? File-based Proprietary data formats Exports to IFC not uniform Not easily query-able across multiple facilities Not scalable to large number of users BIM Server technology limited to design focus Limited security No clustering, failover, etc. Not a Viable Solution Look at standards-based geospatial tools
The Analytic Power of GIS Spatial analysis and modeling Overlay analysis (union, intersect) Proximity analysis (buffer, near) Surface analysis (hill shade, slope) Linear analysis (connectivity, tracing) Raster analysis Geoprocessing tools Database management Rich API Enterprise-ready Integrates with CMMS CAFM IWMS
BIM to GIS Integration Issues BIM is MUCH richer in detail than a GIS database GIS has only recently become fully 3-D Design BIM contains all the information needed to construct a building, but not to manage it Space polygons Occupant information Asset details (make, model, etc.) Equipment maintenance data Some of the missing data can be supplied by COBie GIS database and BIM will require network capabilities to share information

Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie2) adds Tabular Information to BIM Capture tabular data needed by the owner as it is created by Designers Constructors Commissioning Agents Industry participation BIM vendors now export to COBIE CMMS/CAFM vendors import COBIE
COBie2 is Structured to Import Non-spatial Data into CMMS/CAFM/GIS Developed by USACOE, NASA, buildingsmartalliance International Standard resources/cobie.php Must be a requirement of design, construction contracts Industry resistance fading

Significance of BIM-GIS Project Multiple organizations and Federal agencies involved Based on open data standards (ISO, OGC) Over 50 Use Cases identified Specific data exchanges being developed
ESRI s Building Interior Space Data Model (BISDM) for GIS - A user community effort Started in summer 2007 Built template to serve many uses cases and compatible technologies Support property, building, and asset objects Models, supporting documentation, data loading tools, and sample viewers at
BISDM Asset Data Feature Classes BISDM Mimics the structure of IFCs
Potential Benefits COBie2 Equipment, maintenance information auto-loaded into CMMS before occupancy! Space information auto-loaded into CAFM, leasing databases before occupancy! BIM to GIS Accurate spatial data for space management, asset management, analysis, routing, tracing, etc. autoloaded in 3-D NBIMS National standard that incorporates all of the above In development (Issue date: 2012)
