Since June four years ago, an average of 11 jobs per month has been posted online for mechanical engineering technicians. The most commonly advertised job titles were mechanical technician (50), technician (17), assembly test technician (15), engineering technician (14), test technician (11), electromechanical technician (9), mechanical CAD technician (9), and pneumatic technician (7). Job Location. The majority of advertising employers in the metro New York City area were in New Jersey (55 percent). Of the jobs in New York, a majority was in New York City and most of the remaining ads were for jobs on Long Island or in Westchester County. Hiring Difficulty. Wanted Analytics scores occupations according to a hiring scale, which takes into account the number of current workers in the occupation, the number of employers hiring, local unemployment rates, and pay that is offered, among other factors. According to this scale, mechanical engineering technicians are very easy for employers to recruit and hire. The average posting period was 41 days. Of the ads specifying salary ranges, a majority offered between $41,850 and $51,150 per year. Industry. Positions for mechanical engineering technicians concentrated in the administrative support services (i.e., temporary help services) and in manufacturing. Online advertisers. The websites advertising the most of these job ads were Beyond.com, Craigslist, CareerBuilder, Monster, and Regional Help Wanted. Career counselors and jobseekers should add these sites to their list of resources if they do not consult them already. Skills, Tools and Technologies. The skills, tools, and technologies most commonly mentioned in job ads were quality systems, pneumatics systems, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), computeraided design (CAD), milling machines, and preventive maintenance. Other Certifications. Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS-SCI) and mechanical inspector were mentioned as other certifications. Employers. Employers with ads are listed on the next page. Although employment agencies play a large role in recruiting these positions, it is clear that several firms are still directly recruiting.
