3 SPANISH ARTS DAY: Dia de Artes Espaňoles On Tuesday 23 rd June 2015 (martes 23 de junio), we held a unique day of creativity here at Sandgate Primary School, focusing on the inspirational art of Pablo Picasso & Antoni Gaudi, two prolific Spanish artists. Ks1 focused on Picasso, who was born in Malaga in Andalucia, in the South; whilst KS2 learned about the life and works of the Catalan artist and architect, Gaudi, one of Barcelona s most famous sons.

5 Pablo Picasso Born: October 25, 1881, Málaga, Spain Died: April 8, 1973, Mougins, France One of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century. Co-founder of the Cubist movement.

7 Each class focused on different aspects of the artists creations. These included creating their own abstract self-portraits, painting in colour tones such as used in the Blue Period, designing and making their own Gaudi towers and chimneys out of clay AND designing their own structures inspired by Gaudi s Sagrada Familia Cathedral, to name just a few. The children developed their Spanish language skills, being taught and then challenged to describe their own art works in Spanish. As well as the Art and Language skills, they had many other opportunities to use cross-curricular skills in Computing, Geography, History and other areas.

15 Antoni GaudÍ Born: June 25, 1852, Reus, Spain Died: June 10, 1926, Barcelona, Spain Antoni Gaudí was a Spanish Catalan architect and the best known practitioner of Catalan Modernism. Gaudí's works reflect an individualized and distinctive style

22 KS2 Vocabulary taught: The children enjoyed reproducing Gaudi art works through drawings, paintings, pastel and charcoal interpretations as well as clay, junk modelling and mosaics The Spanish language skills were developed and the children wrote a little about their art work in the target language

24 Describing the Art: A Progression of Spanish language skills : KS2 Vocab and Grammar Year 3 : Children write the key vocabulary in picture. Year 4: Children write the key vocabulary with numbers and colours. Year 5 and 6: Children write key vocabulary with numbers and colours in short descriptive sentences.

30 This was our first Spanish Arts Day- it has proved very successful and we are sure there will be more to come in future The children had been invited to dress up and they did themselves proud, with some amazing costumes, as these photos demonstrate!
