1 ALFA R36: Upgrade Firmware Version This is a guide to updating the firmware running on the R36. Firmware is the software on a device which is executed when it is powered on, it is stored in permanent flash memory and provides the basis for all of the device's functions. From time-to-time manufacturers release updates to this software, either to fix error ('bugs') in a previous release or to provide the device with extra capabilities. In order to update - or 're-flash' the firmware you need to follow this simple process. The first step is to obtain a copy of the update; This can be found on our website on the R36 product page as a.zip file. Download this to your computer and extract the file - for example - to your desktop. Unfortunately the R36 firmware cannot be upgraded over WiFi so you will need to physically connect a PC/ laptop to the device using an Ethernet cable into the port nearest the power connector (LAN). Then, depending on which OS you are using do the following: For Windows XP: 1. Click on start, click on Control Panel, Network Connection, Right-click on Local Area Connection, and go to Properties. 2. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on Properties. 3. Select Use the Following IP Address, enter IP address and subnet mask is 4. Click OK on IP Address settings 5. Click OK once more to save the settings. For Windows Vista: 1. Click on start -> control panel -> network and internet -> network and sharing centre -> managed network connection 2. Right click on local area connection -> left click on properties 3. Select internet protocol v4 -> click on properties 4. Select Use the Following IP Address, enter IP address and subnet mask is 5. Click OK on IP Address settings 6. Click OK once more to save the settings. For Windows 7: 1. Click on start -> control panel -> network and internet -> network and sharing centre -> change adapter settings 2. Right click on local area connection -> left click on properties 3. Select internet protocol v4 -> click on properties 4. Select Use the Following IP Address, enter IP address and subnet mask is 5. Click OK on IP Address settings 6. Click OK once more to save the settings. For MAC OSX: 1. Click on the apple icon on the top and select system preferences and select network 2. Location should be selected as Automatic and should be on network status, then please choose built in Ethernet below and click on configure 3. Please click on the TCP/IP tab and select manually on configure IPv4, type in on the IP address, subnet mask of , router of and ignore the DNS server settings 4. Click on apply. 2 Open your computer s Web browser and enter in the address bar, a window like this should pop onto the screen. Default username is admin, password is admin. Once you log in you should be greeted with the screen below. Notice the firmware version in this example? This is the factory default and does not support AWUS036NH or TubeU-N devices, for that you need at least v Click on the Advanced tab to continue 2 OF 5

3 Under the Advanced tab, click on Management. Find the Firmware Upgrade section on the screen and click on the Browse button. This is where you will need to navigate to where you put the unzipped firmware image from the very first step. 3 OF 5

4 Once you have located the firmware.img file select it and click Open. Then press Upload to apply the update. When the upgrade process is taking place it is VERY important not to switch off the power, or disconnect the Ethernet cable to the R36 as this can result in the device becoming non operational.or 'Bricked' Once the page on the browser goes blank the upgrade process has completed and the R36 is re-booting. Give it a couple of minutes to sort itself out then re-enter in the address bar of the browser. 4 OF 5

5 You should be greeted by the screen below. Notice the new firmware version. If you had any configuration settings stored on the device previously these will have been wiped by the upgrade and will have to be re-entered. You can now disconnect the Ethernet cable and reverse the changes you made on page one to your IP settings. Once this is all done you should be able to connect wirelessly to your R36 as before. 5 OF 5
