Jain Publishers Ltd Training international, bilingual business guidebooks The KEY to Successful Teaching As you know, teachers are busy people. They don t always have time to spend hours before class preparing exercises, articles and recorded material. They need a textbook that they can simply Take and Teach! Is there a textbook like that? There is now. Key is a new coursebook for adult learners of English. Each double-page spread in the book is the basis of a 90-minute lesson. There is a wide variety of activities for the students, getting them to practise the four skills, but with an emphasis on speaking and listening. The books are currently being piloted in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and there is already considerable interest in the new series from English teachers in Europe and other parts of the world. So how is Key different? I have been an English teacher for over 20 years and I know the importance of making the book relevant to the student. An important element of Key is that it allows students to express their own opinion about subjects that are important to them, even at the A1/beginner level. There are regular exercises which get the student to make these sentences true for you a transformation exercise, but one which makes the topic relevant. Each unit consists of three parts, A, B and C, each covering 90 minutes of teaching time, or more if required. These three teaching sections are followed by the D section, intended as homework and/or extra practice. Of course, teachers are welcome to Digital Media in Education At the end of 2009, publishers from 11 countries gathered at Cornelsen Verlag in Berlin in order to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with new types of media and increasing digitization in the field of education. It became clear that the integration of digital media in the classroom has progressed more in some countries than in others. Differences depend, for example, on the standards issued by education ministries and the technical equipment available to schools. The three-day conference offered ample opportunities for discussion on future challenges and the potential for further business collaboration. A series of cooperative agreements was also initiated at the conference. use section D in class for guided practice. After every three units there is a unique feature in Key: the journal. Many students come to an English class, do the exercises that the teacher gives them and then they go home. Learning English is a chore and they get on with it. Does English have to be a chore? Can t it be fun and interesting? The journal recreates the style of an in-flight magazine with interesting articles and some excellent photography. This is a great opportunity for the student to be immersed in English, forgetting that they are studying and absorbing new language while reading. Dr. Stephen Krashen, a respected expert in the field of free reading, will no doubt be happy with the amount of genuine free-form material available in Key. Another important aspect of Key is the communicative approach. Key is full of exercises which get the students talking. Not just talking to practice a particular structure, but talking because they want to. The exercises are not only relevant, but they are fun as well, so your students will learn English and have an enjoyable time doing so. They become actively involved in their own Participants of the congress Digital Media in Education, Berlin learning which benefits both the teacher and the students. One aspect of Key that many teachers have commented on is the humour. The coursebook is there to make the learning process an enjoyable one and the Key team has done everything possible to ensure that the student laughs while learning. Teachers have been waiting for a long time for a book like Key: a coursebook which you can just take and teach, whether you re new to teaching or are a practised hand. 3 Background Background 10 years of the Bologna Process New demands on foreign-language teaching? More than ten years ago, 30 European countries signed the Bologna Declaration. Its goal was to create a shared European Higher Education Area characterized by comparable educational standards and geared to the promotion of: mobility, international competitiveness and employability. For students this means gaining a greater degree of international recognition for their qualifications and, in particular, a greater ability to meet the demands of business and research institutions. For example, the qualifications of Diplom, Magister and Staatesexamen previously awarded in Germany are being replaced by the new bachelor s and master s degrees. Promoting the ability to compete internationally indicates in itself that knowledge of foreign languages is now regarded as essential and is gaining a new level of significance. How is this concept being anchored in study programs and in what respect is its status influencing tertiary studies and the way they are organized? We would like to address this issue using the example of English in German universities. One aspect of the Bologna Process identifies key qualifications, and these include knowledge of foreign languages. Key qualifications play an important role in the accreditation of the new degree programs. Since students need to prove they are qualified in key areas, it is to be expected that the number of language learners will increase in the future. In many cases the language teaching offered to students is being extended and this is evident in the expansion of language institutions. It is also noticeable that subject-specific language courses are increasing. We are also seeing an increasing demand for exampreparation courses. Tests marking the completion of courses are offered by almost all language institutes. Certified external tests are also widely used, for example, TOEFL and TOEIC. Students are now required to have a level of English knowledge corresponding to level B2 of the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages. However,in reality, this is not always the case. This becomes evident when we look at the levels of the English-language courses offered, which correspond to levels B2 and C1 in only three quarters of cases. The provision of language teaching is for the most part the task of university language centres. However, there are also other institutions that offer courses for students, such as adult education centers and private language schools. Classroom-based teaching remains very common. However, it is likely that there will be an increase in forms of learning in which students have more responsibility for directing their own individual language acquisition. So-called blended learning courses are already widely available. 3 to 4 teaching units are offered on average every week. The use of textbooks is particularly common at beginner level. At higher levels, textbook use declines and course instructors make much greater use of material they have produced themselves. Course instructors argue that many textbooks do not meet the standards required by universities because they are not relevant enough to students and their social environments. Cornelsen Verlag has taken this into account when designing the textbook series Career Express, which meets the demand for more material to support blended learning by including a comprehensive range of interactive exercises which support autonomous language acquisition. Percentage share Individual instruction (1%) Tutorials (7%) Autonomous learning phases (14%) Blended learning (8%) Tandem learning (6%) Language trips abroad (2%) Project seminars (5%) Online courses (4%) This form of learning is expected to increase in the future. In addition, new degree programs will be taught in shorter timeframes, including the acquisition of key qualifications. The share of classroom teaching will decrease and an increasing amount of time will be devoted to autonomous study. This shows that English textbooks for university students will have to satisfy very different demands to those placed on textbooks for other target groups. EFL: Comparative use of different course/learning types Classroom teaching (36%) Intensive courses (18%) (Source: University of Leipzig study, Learning language at German universities. A multi-method investigation of the status quo. ) Career Express is a series based on a new concept of English teaching in universities and vocational colleges. It has been specially developed to meet the needs of students and to prepare them for the transition into professional life. The volumes Business English B2 und Job Applications have already been published and a volume for level C1 will soon follow. The textbook Business English not only covers classroom teaching. It also has a strong focus on autonomous study and offers tailored self-learning material available to students online. The textbook also allows the material to be tailored to different types of courses. Each volume offers specialist language material that can be used over one or two semesters. The modular design of the volumes allows for the flexible use of topics and units in accordance with individual course programs. With regard to self-study, each unit offers two pages entitled Over to you, containing interesting tasks that expand on the thematic and linguistic content of the unit in question. Exciting online modules geared to the units can be accessed and used independently by students from any computer with an internet connection. Career Express: tailor-made course for universities A further, attractive resource specially designed for university language centres is the Cornelsen Campus Suite. It consists of an online library with interactive modules, tasks and case studies and facilitates the combination of published content and other materials when instructors are designing their courses. Teaching guides containing suggestions for lesson design provide further support for classroom teaching. The Cornelsen Campus Suite can be integrated into existing learning platforms or used as an independent system. At present the library contains material for: Academic Writing (C1), Business English (B2), English for s (B1), English for Telephoning (B1), English for Meetings (B1), English for Presentations (B1), Grammar (from A1) and Intercultural Cases 4 Cornelsen International Newsletter 2/2010 Cornelsen International Newsletter 2/2010 5
4 Portrait Duden Educational Publishing House Duden a trademark with tradition In the German-speaking world the Duden brand is associated first and foremost with German spelling and language. The Rechtschreibduden the Duden dictionary dedicated to German orthography is the reference work for everyone interested in good, correct writing. The first Duden dictionary, written by Konrad Duden, was published 130 years ago. With the spelling reform of 1911, this Duden became the standard reference work for German orthography and remains so today. Over many decades, a wide range of dictionaries and reference works on spelling and the use of the German language have been published under the Duden trademark. Since 2009 the Duden publishing house and the Duden brand have been part of the Cornelsen Publishing Group. The Duden trademark in the educational publishing market In 2005 the first school textbooks bearing the Duden trademark were published. Duden s acquisition of a stake in the East German educational publishing house Paetec provided the basis for developing a new textbook programme aimed at establishing the Duden brand in the German-language textbook market. The Duden Paetec educational publishing house has its headquarters in Berlin. A complete programme for the subjects German, mathematics, general science and English for primary school is now available under the Duden trademark. The Duden primary school programme The Duden primary school programme is an interdisciplinary teaching programme that covers the subjects German, mathematics, general science and English and has been designed for course-based teaching with open phases. The learning mascot Lexi accompanies the children throughout their time at primary school. The programme places emphasis on differentiated learning materials and includes dictionaries and reference works for primary school pupils. Within a short time this new textbook programme has achieved considerable success on the German market. Duden at secondary level Starting in 2005 the Duden trademark was also used for all new publications developed for secondary school level. Up until now the primary focus of the Paetec educational publishing house has been on the subjects of mathematics, computer science and the natural sciences as well as formularies and reference works for pupils and study guides on plants and animals specially developed for school students. The reference series Basiswissen Schule (Basic Knowledge for School) currently includes over 20 titles covering all teaching subjects up to final secondary school examination level. A notable feature of this series is its multi-media character, with each title consisting of a book, a CD or DVD, and an internet portal The series is of a high quality and has been specifically designed to meet pupils needs. The SMS series is another reference series for school students. It is pub-lished in a modern paperback format and designed, above all, to facilitate the rapid location of information. It also covers all teaching subjects. In recent years, secondary-level books on other subjects, such as politics, music and art, have also been published under the Duden trademark. Duden Paetec in Berlin The Duden educational publishing house is part of Duden Paetec, which was founded in 1990 as Paetec in Berlin. It currently comprises of three divisions: the educational publishing house, the Duden institutes of learning therapy to overcome difficulties in reading, spelling and arithmetic, and the business academy. Duden Paetec has around 100 staff-members, some 80 of whom are employed in the educational publishing division. The programme offered by the Duden educational publishing house currently includes some 1500 available titles. Are you interested in further information? Cornelsen is now continuing this tradition with Faim d Histoire, a series of engaging comics dealing with episodes from French history for use in French-language teaching. We talked to the editor responsible for the series, Dr. Yvonne Petter-Zimmer, about the background to the project. There is already a wide selection of French-language comics enjoyed by readers around the world. It therefore seems a logical step to use comics in French-language lessons as a way of motivating learners. So why not simply use original comics in language lessons? In France comics are a highly developed art form in their own right. They are full of allusions and quotations that can only be appreciated fully by those who have access to the corresponding cultural and socio-cultural knowledge. This can make it difficult to read the original comics, especially for learners who have only a basic knowledge of the language. The people creating the comics are both experienced comic-book authors and teachers. This makes it easier to tailor the comics to the target group. For what age group or for what learning stage has Faim d Histoire been developed? When we came up with the idea of developing such a series, our main aim was to introduce students to selected eras in French history in an amusing way. The intention is less to instruct students than to motivate them to immerse themselves in the different eras. In this sense, the title But he was so sweet in the chat room! Bringing up, educating and Suddenly all looking after children. her friends Textbook for training and study are in love and don t have any time anymore. Fourteen-yearold Sarah is frustrated and throws herself into the virtual world of chat rooms. Here she meets the charming Sun King. But what begins as harmless flirtation quickly becomes deadly serious. Suddenly Sarah finds herself locked in a room in the middle of a forest Children and young people spend a lot of their free time chatting and flirting on diverse internet forums. This makes such forums an ideal medium for paedophiles, who can act anonymously or use false identities to approach and sexually harass young people. The learning materials (available separately) accompanying the novel address the risks posed by the internet and include important tips on how to deal with them such as: How do I protect my personal information? At what point does interaction become sexual molestation? How do molesters using chat rooms give themselves away? How do I avoid getting into dangerous situations? In addition, a range of e.g puzzles, and questions about the content of the text promote comprehension skills, particularly among young people with poor reading skills, and help improve verbal and written linguistic competence. Further titles available. Im Chat war er noch so süß! 94 pages, paperback 5.00 ISBN of the series Faim d histoire (Hunger for History) definitely refers to its programmatic intention. The series is aimed at students in their second year of French (levels A1+ and A2). Each of Jacques and Jules adventures includes a small appendix that provides information about French society at the time and a vocabulary list. How can teachers use Faim d Histoire in lessons? For every volume teachers can make use of 5-7 hours of teaching material available at The site also includes several worksheets ready for use in the lessons. Bringing up, educating and looking after children is a compendium designed for everyone working with children. It is suitable for teacher training and for studies into early childcare. The book provides specialized knowledge fundamental to this field and places a strong emphasis on practical application. The authors are recognized specialists and have written a work that draws on academic research while also being highly readable. Throughout the book, definitions and key statements are colour-highlighted. The text is interspersed with task sections that help to anchor the content in a practical context, and pictures and diagrams are used to illustrate thematic interconnec- Just Published What adventures are coming up next for Jacques and Jules? 5 Just Published OUR PartnerS Ja, genau! A six-volume textbook for basic-level German The range of available basic-level textbooks has now been extended with Ja genau! Now it is easier for teachers of German as a Foreign Language/ German as a Second Language to find the most appropriate textbook for levels A1 to B1 in terms of aims, lesson style and of course the needs of their learning group. Ja genau! is an alternative for learners who may have found the progression in the studio d textbook too fast. It is better suited to learners who are interested in a less intensive learning experience, rather than, for example, the learners for whom studio d was designed. With this in mind, the authors of Ja genau! have placed greater emphasis on the kind of linguistic demands common in everyday life. A modern textbook needs to find a balance between step-by-step Prima our successful textbook for young German learners is currently being used in many countries and is also available in the following language editions: Chinese Russian Polish Bulgarian Czech Lithuanian Further language additions are to follow. learning and more open, complex tasks. Ja genau! clearly achieves this goal. Each unit offers three double pages, followed by a single page where the learning group has the opportunity to work together on a project. This could be a role play, a learning poster or classroom statistics. As a result cooperative learning and languageuse are directly integrated into the textbook and not as is often the case offered separately in the teacher s book. Furthermore, the textbook is designed to take into account the linguistic variations within the German-speaking world. It is therefore one of the few textbooks that easily lend themselves to use in Switzerland or in Austria. The Ja genau! series is currently an ongoing project. The volumes for level A1 have already been published and the series will be Prima German for young learners up to level B2 The Prima series will be completed this year with volume 5, which takes learners up to level B1 of the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages. The existing volumes will also be supported by additional components, including the series popular DVD for volumes 3 and 4 (level A2) and an additional volume for test preparation complete with CD. complete by the end of Initial responses from teachers using Ja genau! have been very positive: This is a whole new generation of textbook. The approach is holistic and interactive, and takes learners through a series of small steps that ensure they exercise what they are learning. The kind of material that I normally have to add or create when using other textbooks is already contained and integrated in this book. There is nothing fragmentary about the approach to learning. On the contrary, it is integrative throughout. (Bettina Mickenbecker, Goethe Institute, Frankfurt am Main) Ja genau! A1 Part 1, textbook with audio CD and workbook 152 pages, paperback, numerous illustrations, ISBN We are pleased to inform you that learners and teachers will also be able to rely on Prima to take them beyond the B1 level in the future.
