Revolutionizing the Way Spine Surgery is Performed.
THE BIOSPINE EXPERIENCE BioSpine is the result of founders, Dr. James J. Ronzo and Dr. Frank S. Bono's experience, skill and relentless passion for perfection. An extension of Gulfcoast Spine, The BioSpine Institute provides the latest breakthroughs in minimally invasive technology with an emphasis on strategies that encourage the body s natural healing responses.
14,000+ SURGERIES & PROCEDURES PERFORMED Over the past twelve years, Drs. Ronzo and Bono have performed over 14,000 successful spine surgeries and procedures, and eased the back pain of over 35,000 satisfied patients. The BioSpine Institute s commitment to improving patients lives and lifestyles is achieved through a state-of-the-art surgical experience, highly skilled and experienced surgeons and an extremely qualified staff. This allows us to provide the highest level of care in the spine surgery industry. BioSpine.com
MEET THE SURGEONS FRANK S. BONO, D.O. JAMES J. RONZO, D.O. Over 14,000 Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries 35,000 Satisfied Patients Board Certified in Orthopedics Fellowship Trained Nationally Recognized Spine Surgeons Drs. Ronzo and Bono perform true minimally invasive spine surgery and are part of an elite group, with less than 8% of spine surgeons performing true minimally invasive spinal surgery Actively training surgeons throughout the United States in the art of minimally invasive spinal surgery Our surgical outcomes have been featured in:
MEET THE SURGEONS Both Dr. James J. Ronzo and Dr. Frank S. Bono have been on the forefront of minimally invasive spine surgery for well over a decade. Although both surgeons were originally trained in open-procedure spinal surgeries, they quickly recognized the extensive patient benefits of the minimally invasive approach. The minimally invasive approach produces vastly fewer complications and allows for a much quicker recovery time for the patient. Drs. Bono and Ronzo perform true minimally invasive spine surgery and are part of an elite group, with less than eight percent of spine surgeons performing high-level minimally invasive spinal surgery. Not only do the doctors perform ONLY minimally invasive spinal surgeries, they also provide training to other surgeons. James J. Ronzo, D.O., practicing for 14 years, is a nationallyrecognized leader in minimally invasive spinal surgery. Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Ronzo attended the University of Central Florida and Nova Southeastern University, interned at Flint Osteopathic Hospital, and completed his orthopaedic residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center, Grand Blanc, Michigan, followed by his spine fellowship at Tampa General Hospital. Dr. Ronzo regularly offers his knowledge and expertise in learning opportunities for visiting spine surgeons in both minimally invasive spinal surgery and spinal fusion, and lectures internationally on minimally invasive spinal fusions. Drs. Bono and Ronzo have performed over 14,000 successful spine surgeries and spine related procedures, and eased the back pain of over 35,000 satisfied patients. Frank S. Bono, D.O., has been practicing for over 9 years, specializing in disorders of the spine. Board certified by the American Osteopathic Association, Dr. Bono is a graduate of the University of Central Florida and earned his medical degree at Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Bono completed an AOA Approved Internship at Michigan State University Botsford General Hospital. Following this internship & general orthopedic residency, Dr. Bono completed a Neurosurgical and Orthopedic Spine Surgery Fellowship in pediatric and adult spine disorders at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and the Michigan Brain and Spine Institute, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Bono is a published author on spinal reconstruction and speaks fluent Italian. BioSpine.com
5 KEY FACTORS WHEN CHOOSING A SPINE SURGEON 1 Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono have over 23 years of combined experience. Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono have successfully treated over 35,000 patients for spine-related disorders. Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono have performed over 14,000 successful minimally invasive spinal surgeries. Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono are among the top spinal surgeons in the nation as documented by Consumer Reports, Newsweek, ProPublica & Health Grades. 2 Surgeon's Experience Minimally Invasive Approach Minimally invasive spinal surgery requires an incision that is only 3/4 in length. That s the same as the diameter of a United States penny. In minimally invasive spinal surgery, muscles are gently separated and not cut. Smaller incisions and less invasion into surrounding tissue and muscles means quicker recover times
5 KEY FACTORS WHEN CHOOSING A SPINE SURGEON 3 Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono have been rated in the top 5 in the nation for back surgery results. After more than 14,000 surgeries, Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono s infection rate is almost non-existent and is dramatically less than the national average. 4 Drs. Bono & Ronzo's minimally invasive spinal surgery averages 45 minutes in length. By comparison, traditional spinal surgery can last several hours. 5 Nationally Ranked Outcomes Length of Surgery Recovery Time All patients receiving minimally invasive spinal surgery are able to return home on the same day of the surgical procedure. Recovery time for BioSpine patients is consistently half of that for patients who have received traditional spinal surgery. Why put yourself through the physical trauma of a traditional surgery when a highly skilled minimally invasive surgeon can perform the same surgery through a 3/4" incision? BioSpine.com
UNDERSTANDING THE MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACH Medtronic s comprehensive platform of minimally invasive spinal technologies enables surgeons to achieve the same surgical objectives as with a traditional, open procedure. With more than a decade of experience in minimally invasive spine and a complete minimally invasive product portfolio, Medtronic remains on the forefront of minimally invasive spinal techniques. The METRx System incorporates technology developed by Gary K. Michelson, MD. A thin, fiber optic lightsource provides the surgeons with the visibility to see through the small opening. Images provided by Medtronic, Inc. Thin Fiber Optic Light Source These are just a few of the surgeries and procedures that are performed at the BioSpine Institute. Fracture Stabilization Kyphoplasty Vertebroplasty Radiofrequency Ablation Spinal Cord Stimulation Disc Replacement Discectomy Disc Removal or Decompression Corpectomy Laminectomy Laminotomy Spine Fusions (Multiple Levels) Please remember any surgical procedure that can be performed in a traditional manner, we can perform through the minimally invasive approach
UNDERSTANDING THE MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACH ACTUAL SIZE Your entire surgery will be performed through this 3/4" opening. 3/4" METRx tubular retractor Complex surgery through such a small opening requires years of training and dedication, which is why only 8% of spine surgeons perform true minimally invasive procedures.
UNDERSTANDING THE MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACH There are over 6,000 spine surgeons in the United States. Less than 8% can perform spine surgery at the level of Drs Ronzo and Bono. Typical open back surgery procedures require a 4 to 6 inch incision and can typically take 2 to 3 hours. Benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery over open back surgery. Less scarring Lower risk of infection Minimal blood loss Shorter recovery times Faster procedure Less time under anesthesia The muscles of the back are gently separated with dilators. There is no cutting or destruction of the muscle. Very few surgeons in the nation are able to perform this level of minimally invasive spine surgery. Very difficult to learn Requires years of hands on practice Few surgeons are teaching
UNDERSTANDING THE MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACH Which would you prefer? BioSpine's Approach Traditional Approach 3/4" Incision 4" x 6" Incision Not to scale. All of the same benefits from the traditional approach can be gained from Drs. Ronzo and Bono's minimally invasive approach. BioSpine.com
THE BIOSPINE PROCESS The first step of the BioSpine process is a thorough interview wherein the doctor is able to understand and assess all of the patients concerns. Following the interview is a physical examination, which may include any or more of the following; MRI, CT-Scan, X-Rays. Once all the information has been collected and analyzed, the doctor is able to create an individualized plan of treatment created specifically for each patient. The treatment plan, whether or not it involves a surgical procedure, will be drafted with the sole intent of obtaining the best possible results for the patient. Once a patient enters into the treatment plan, their progress will be both implemented and monitored directly by either Dr. Frank Bono or Dr. James Ronzo. Interview Conversation with the Doctor to ascertain problem areas and concerns. Review of any existing medical documentation. Physical Examination Examination with the Doctor, which may include an MRI, CT-Scan and/or X-Rays. Individualized Plan Information from the interview and physical examination is analyzed and an individualized plan for treatment is created. 100% OF OUR PRACTICE IS DEVOTED TO DISORDERS OF THE SPINE Treatment Implementation of the treatment plan, which may or may not involve a surgical procedure. Follow Up Progress is monitored directly by either Dr. Frank Bono or Dr. James Ronzo to ensure the best possible results.
BioSpine s brand new, state-of-the-art facility is located conveniently near Tampa International Airport. Although all surgical procedures will take place at BioSpine Institute in Tampa, follow-up visits can be scheduled at any Gulfcoast Spine locations in Central Florida.
MORE REASONS TO CHOOSE BIOSPINE: 3/4" THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH IS THE ACTUAL SIZE OF OUR INCISION
MORE REASONS TO CHOOSE BIOSPINE: The Men Behind the Masks Dr. Bono and Dr. Ronzo are the founders and surgeons at BioSpine They are also the owners. The benefits of being physician-owned is that there are no business politics, or remote corporate individuals making decisions. The doctors are able to always put the care of their patients first. The Location BioSpine s brand new, state-of-theart facility is located conveniently near Tampa International Airport. Although surgical procedures will take place at BioSpine in Tampa, additional follow-up visits can be scheduled at any Gulfcoast Spine location to better serve the patient. The Experience Dr. Bono and Dr. Ronzo are not just the primary surgeons at BioSpine, they are the only surgeons. In order to guarantee only the best care and results, it begins with a highly trained staff. Our entire staff has extensive backgrounds in spine surgery and care and have worked with Drs Ronzo and Bono for many years in the hospital setting. All patients will meet either Dr. Bono or Dr. Ronzo for their initial consultation and work with that same doctor throughout their treatment. It s a personal experience that ensures peace of mind when considering such a life-changing opportunity. BioSpine.com
