4 Dinorwic Lake Latitude Longitude Surface Area 12,763 acres 7 Miles long 2.5 Miles wide Mean Depth 12.7 feet Max Depth 27 feet GPS Coordinates to Pine Sunset Lodge N W Dinorwic Lake is the first lake fed by the fresh waters of the Wabigoon River. The Dinorwic and Wabigoon Lakes are a stained water making for fantastic fishing all day long. The river coming into Dinorwic is a dark tea or root-beer color. The Walleyes are typically golden bellied with dark green backs. The lake has many bays and other lakes attached (additional 6,000 acres). These waters are aqua blue/green to crystal clear with a waterfalls feeding one of the lakes. Above the waterfall is a deeper clear lake that holds Lake Trout, big Northern and some fantastic Smallmouth. We have a boat up there for our customers use. Walleye: Walleye fishing on Dinorwic Lake is fantastic. Dinorwic Lake is a long narrow lake and is fairly shallow and the water is many times more nutrient than other lakes in the area. Dinorwic Lake is also warmer than most Northwestern Ontario Lakes. As a result, there are plenty of weeds both close to shore and in the deeper water. The warmer water also means our Walleyes grow faster and bigger than Walleyes in other Lakes. Dinorwic is an easy lake to fish. There are numerous bays, island points, rock humps, sunken islands, weed beds, flats, river channels and rice edges which are all hot spots for Walleye. With such easy to recognize structure, it s a lot of fun exploring the lake and finding new Walleye holes. Walleye are most common in the 1 to 2-pound range. Guests catch many bigger Walleyes and fish in the 4 to 7-pound range are caught and released frequently. On occasion trophy Walleyes over 10-pounds get caught. Water temperature, weather, how hard you fish and how well you know the lake are all factors in your success. On an average day a guest can expect to catch 15 to 25 Walleyes. On a good day, guests have reported catch more than 100 Walleyes. If you are new to the lake, we will show you where the hot spots are to get you started. Dinorwic Lake is one of the best lakes in Northern Ontario for both size and numbers, which is why the system was chosen to host the In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail. Walleye Fishing Tips: We find the active Walleyes will bite in 3-8 feet of water. This means you are fishing a couple of feet from shore, island points, rock humps or weed lines and not out in the open lake. We cannot stress that fact more. You can fish with ¼ oz. jigs and live bait such as minnows, crawlers or leaches. Twister tails are a good option as well. Walleyes will hit obnoxious colors like chartreuse, pink, white, yellow or orange. Spinner rigs work too. It all depends on what you are willing to loose. Jigs are cheaper and work very well. If you are trolling an island a foot crank bait works. Any color but we like the chartreuse and orange Medium to Fast action rods with 8 lb test is ideal but no need to go out and buy new gear. What works for walleye in your area will work here too. Muskie Fishing: Dinorwic Lake system is one of the hottest Muskie lakes systems in Ontario and maybe in all of North America. Not only are great numbers of Muskie found in the lake, the Muskie get big. Some people call Muskie the fish of 10,000 casts. You will never hear that quote around here. Our guests come back year after year because their Muskie catching success is so extraordinary that there is no reason to go anywhere else. The Muskie are everywhere. They are out in open water, along the shore, in bays, off rocky points and sometimes even swim up the many streams that feed the lake. Generally the best place to catch them is along the weed beds as they wait for unsuspecting feeder fish to venture out of cover. The biggest reason why there are so many Muskie is the presence of Cabbage Weed, which is their favorite ambush cover, and the abundance of food. Dinorwic Lake is stuffed with Perch, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Pike and other feeder fish. It s an endless banquet. With all this food combined with the warmer than usual water, Muskie grow fast and grow big. Big water also means big fish. Dinorwic Lake and the adjoining lakes gives you over 50,000 acres of prime Muskie habitat. Muskies caught are usually 40-inch or better. Many of our guests that are Muskie fanatics spend most of the week hunting down Muskie and are prepared with the right equipment and lures. Anyone can run into a big Muskie but our die-hard Muskie fishing guests catch many fish in the 40 to 50-inch range and over the course of the summer, several Muskie over 50-inches are caught and released. A 59 is our biggest caught/released to date. We have sited Muskie over 60. There are many people including Ministry of Natural Resources biologist whom believe Dinorwic Lake system will be where the next World Record Muskie will be caught. If you are new to Muskie fishing, we will help you get started and show you where all the hot spots are. If you are an experienced Muskie hunter, then prepare for a success rate, which you may have never seen before. Muskie Fishing Tips: Muskie, also called Musky or Muskellunge, are the biggest freshwater predatory fish found in Ontario and have a reputation for being extremely aggressive and hard fighting. Because of this reputation, there is a lot of folklore surrounding them. You may have heard that you have to troll really fast and use really big lures to catch them. This is not true. Trolling Speed: It s true that Muskie fisherpersons find more success trolling faster than they would for Walleye but there is a limit. A good Walleye speed is around 2-miles per hour. Many people fishing for Muskie will troll as fast as 10-miles per hour but the prime speed is between 4 and 6-miles per hour. You will catch Muskie trolling really fast and generally the really big Muskie hit the faster baits but trolling at a slower speed enables you to catch Muskie of all sizes. Size of Lures: Traditional folklore also tells people new to Muskie fishing that you have to use really big lures. The truth is Muskie will hit any size lure. Tons of big Muskie get caught on little jigs used by people who are Walleye fishing. People trolling with both small, medium and big lures catch fish. The size of the lure should be based on the amount of weeds in the area. In open water, you can troll with bigger lures as the water is cleaner with less weeds. In water that is weedier or if you are trolling along side thick weeds, a smaller lure is best. What it comes down to is a big lure is hard to bring in and if you have to bring in your line every few minutes because of weeds, big lures become an extremely un-enjoyable experience. With open water, try trolling with bigger lures. The most popular big trolling lures for Muskie are Willy Lures, Ziggy Lures, Swim Wizzes, large spinner baits or long shallow-running Rapalas. Perch-color and Fire-Tiger are good during the day and red seems to be good in the evening. There are many different colors and some fisherpersons find unique color combinations that work well. When in weeds it s better to use smaller lures. 6 or 7- inch Original Floating Rapalas (the skinny ones) or Thundersticks work well. The jointed J-11 Rapalas are also an excellent lure and seem to catch Muskie of any size. Spinner baits can be very affective as well. Casting: If you want to cast into patches of Water Cabbage or between lines of thick weeds, various kinds of crank-baits work well. Suick s and Believers are very popular. Large spinner-baits are also very effective. Weather: Sunny hot days or cold days with rain; it does not seem to matter. Many fish start their feeding cycles when atmospheric pressure changes. The Muskie seem to like it when the pressure and weather stay consistent. Calm evening seem to be the favorite around here. Steel Leaders & Line: You must use steel leaders at all times. It s best to use black leaders as sometimes a Muskie will see a silver shine ahead of the lure and hit the top of the leader and bite through the line. It does happen. The line you use should be based on the size of the fishing rod you use. In open water with a lightto-medium action rod, many people use 10 to 12- pound test line. In areas where there are thicker weeds, 12 to 15-pound test can be used. What is really getting popular is the braded line. You can get 15-pound test, which is as thin as 6-pound. The secret to Muskie fishing is to have patience and try everything. You can fish for hours and hours and not catch anything and then start hitting them like crazy for an hour or two and then it stops dead again. Some people call Muskie the fish of 10,000 casts. This may be true on some lakes but not on Dinorwic. Dinorwic Lake is one of the top Muskie Lakes in North America. Northern Pike Fishing: Northern Pike are one of the most common fish in Northwestern Ontario. They are found in almost every lake and they are easy to catch because they attack everything that moves. Dinorwic Lake is no exception. Even with our high Muskie population, Northern Pike still flourish and are one of the dominant fish species in the lake. Many of our guests like to catch small Pike, as that s the best for eating. A small Pike, eaten fresh, can be compared to Walleye. Most of our guests who come for Northern Pike are not satisfied catching small eaters; they want their picture taken with a trophy.

5 Dinorwic Lake and adjoining lakes have over 50,000 acres of prime Northern Pike habitat. We have many weedy bays, rocky points, sunken weed beds, islands and shoals, which are all prime Northern Pike areas. Many of these areas are where small streams run into the lake. At the mouth of these streams you will find Cabbage Weed, Wild Rice, Lily Pads and Bulrushes (Cattails). These are the plants that create perfect Pike habitat. Perfect habitat combined with the warm nutrient water of Wabigoon Lake means our Northern Pike grow big and grow fast. Pike are common in the 2 to 12-pound range. Many guests catch and release Pike all summer in the 15 to 20-pound range. On occasion, Pike as big as 25- pounds are caught but they are rare and only a couple of guests each year run into a monster Pike like that. Northern Pike Fishing Tips: Northern Pike hit everything and anything. They are the easiest fish to catch. Here are a couple of tips to maximize the amount of strikes and some ideas for really big trophy Pike. Time of Year: In many Northern Ontario lakes Northern Pike will be shallow in the spring and summer and then start to go deep in mid-august. This is not an issue in Dinorwic Lake. Pike seem to stay shallow all year. In July there are usually two weeks when the northern will go on a feeding frenzy and in late summer and fall the big Pike will be really shallow in the 1 to 3-foot depth. Lures: Traditionally the best lures and probably the most popular lures are the Red-&-White Daredevil and the Yellow 5-of-Diamonds Daredevil. You use the red in clear water and the yellow in murky water. Spinnerbaits, Crankbaits, Bucktails and Weedless Spoons also work well. When using a Daredevil, try casting up high and just before the lure hits the water, jerk it towards you so the lure slaps the surface. This slap sound seems to trigger a better feeding response from bigger Pike. Pike are also well known for hitting surface lures. Jitterbugs and Spooks are excellent for Pike. A growing trend in Pike fishing, which is getting very popular, is fly-fishing for Pike. With large Pike flies, you can drop the fly in an opening in the middle of thick weeds, which would not be practical for normal lures. Where are the Pike: Pike can be found everywhere. You will find them in the thick weeds or off shoals and even in the streams that run into the lake. Big Trophy Pike generally stay in areas where they can ambush Walleyes, Bass and small Pike. Below is a list of prime spots for big Northern Pike: Points leading into weedy bays Along Wild Rice beds where there are lots of Walleyes Stream or river mouth In the thick cabbage weed or other big leaf weeds Under lily Pads Narrows between lakes or open water where Walleyes migrate Drop offs close to thick shallow weeds Shoals or rocky points where the bass and Walleye hang out is a good spot. If the Walleyes or bass stop feeding, it may mean a big Pike has started to feed. This is when you switch to something big and flashy. Smallmouth Bass Fishing: Smallmouth Bass are very common in Ontario and have now started spreading into the arctic watershed, where they are considered an evasive species. The population of Smallmouth Bass in Dinorwic Lake is natural and very welcome. Most fisherpersons know Smallmouth Bass are the hardest fighting fish pound-for-pound and that they taste great. They are also well known for jumping in the air. If they are so common in Ontario, why fish for them? The fact is that big water and the right habitat produces big fish. In Dinorwic Lake, some of the biggest Smallmouth Bass in Ontario have been caught and released. Dinorwic Lake system has over 50,000 acres of prime Smallmouth habitat. Its shores are lined with rocky points and good spawning streams. The interior of the lake is dotted with hundreds of rocky islands and shoals. All these rocks produce an abundance of their favorite food, which is crayfish. There are also massive schools of minnows in the lake and good weed cover around the rocks. All this food produces great sizes as well as great numbers. Smallmouth Bass are very common in all sizes up to 4- pounds. It s not uncommon for people to catch 50 bass or more in a day. People who fish specifically for bass throughout the week should catch a few 5-pounders and maybe even a 6-pound bass. On rare occasions, monster trophy Smallmouth Bass in the 7 to 8-pound range get caught but they are rare, which is why they are considered trophies. Smallmouth Bass are very easy to catch and it s the very best way to introduce your children or non-fishing friends to fishing. They do not have sharp teeth so it s a safe fish for your kids to catch. Smallmouth Bass Fishing Tips: Smallmouth Bass are generally very easy to catch. Their feeding habits are affected by wind and weather more than time of year. Still Days: On still days when the water surface is like glass, the Smallmouth Bass are feeding but they tend to explore their area and get spread out. Sometimes baitfish will feel too vulnerable and head deeper into darker water and the Smallmouth Bass will follow them. If you are not hitting fish at rocky points or over rocky shoals, try covering some area and troll along the shore about 15 yards out and cast towards shore with small black Mepps Furies or Blue Rapalas or Thundersticks. If the bass have gone deeper, try sinking blue, black or worm-colored tub jigs off in the deeper water that is just off the shoal or rocky point. Windy Days: When it s windy and sunny, that is the very best time for Smallmouth Bass. Normal behavior is to patrol around and on top of the shoals. When it s windy, the Smallmouth Bass will move to the backside of the shoal on the opposite side of where the waves are hitting the rocks. This is also true for points. The bass will move to the backside of the point. They may come up shallow or site back in 5 to 10 feet of water. You can cast with lures because they will keep their eye on the shallow water and come up and hit lures just under the surface. You can also try some lures that go deeper. The very best way to get the big Smallmouth is to get a good size bass hook and put on a big worm with no weight and cast out and let the worm slowly sink. What you can do is un-clip your bail and let the bass take the worm and run with it for 10 second before setting the hook. You can also use the same technique with a live minnow, if you are on a lake that allows live bait. Some of the biggest bass are taken this way. When it s windy, Smallmouth Bass will also head towards a rocky shoreline. Depending on how big the waves are, the bass will sit off in 5 to 10 feet of water but stay close to were the waves are pounding the shoreline. Big waves bring in surface water, which attracts minnows. They also cause an oscillation in the water that the bass do not like. They site in quiet water but close enough to the turbulence to see unsuspecting prey. Rain and low pressure: Generally the Smallmouth Bass will go deep and stop feeding when it s raining or if a low-pressure system moves into the area. They don t always stop feeding. In this case, try heavy tub jigs and fish a lot deeper. On small inland lakes, the bass will go 15 to 20 feet deep. On big lakes, people have found incredible success fishing 30 to 40 feet deep using jigs. Sunny and Hot: In some lakes, the bass will hide in thick weeds. This is a good time to try weedless rubber baits like a Texas Rig or a Carolina Rig. These rigs are usually used for Largemouth Bass but can be effective for thick-cover Smallmouth Bass. Small bass in the ½ to 3-pound range will school and stay in hunting packs. Generally the really big Smallmouth Bass that are 4-pounds and bigger will travel in mating pairs. They will also have a territory and try to keep the smaller bass out. If you find a spot that looks really good for bass and you are not catching any, most likely there is a pair or really big bass in the area. They are big because they are smart. Be very quiet and try casting with lures of jigs. If you don t get anything, leave the area for an hour and then come back quietly and try using some slow baits that will not spook them. A big worm on a hook with no weight is the very best. Jumbo Yellow Perch Dinorwic Lake has an abundance of Jumbo Perch. Small bay with weed line seem to make for perfect habit and food. Early in the summer you will find the perch swimming with the Walleye in the main lake. Than in the fall (August-September) they school up in the bays and channels. Tackle: Ultra light rod with 4-6lb test. 16th oz to 8th oz jigs. Same colors as walleye. Small minnow, crawler chunk or grub works best. When they stop biting on one, throw a different one on. If you don t have ultra light tackle you can catch them just a well on your walleye rod. Lake Trout: There are no Lake Trout in Dinorwic Lake. We are surrounded by many lakes, which have awesome Lake Trout Fishing. We have a boat cashe on Peak Lake and the others are easy to get to by road towing a boat. Lake Trout in the area range from good eating 2-pounders and up and over 30 pounds. Tackle: Flutter spoons of any color or shape on a 6 to 10 foot mono leader attached to a swivel on a Luhr Jensen Dipsey Diver. Instructions for line out and boat speed comes with the dipsey diver. Other presentations may work if you know how to fish them. Our Local Trout Lakes: Peak Lake Thunder Lake Stormy Lake Big Sandy Lake Trout Fly Lake

6 Endorsements and Customer Comments If you want to go to Canada fishing, this is the camp to stay in. Mitch and Sharon will make you feel at home. Get the boat upgrade, has electric start. Get a guide, ask for Brian. He is good and knows the lake. The cabins are clean and the camp cook out is a lot of fun. Glenn Walleye Pros Tom Kemos (WI), Tommy Skarlis (IA), John Kolinski (WI), Ernie Olson (MN) What a great time we had. Our group likes to fish for many different species and Dinorwic Lake is the ticket. Our boat experienced catching walleye, sauger, northern, smallmouth, perch, crappie and what we think was a monster muskie. It would not come up and moved like a submarine until the line broke. So heart breaking we didn t get see this fish but will be back again next year. The cabin was very nice and had everything we needed. The setting of Pine Sunset Lodge is the best we have ever seen with great sunrise and sunset views. The service is by far suburb and can see that Mitch and Sharon really care about their customers. We will for sure be back and will bring more people with us. See you next year. M.D How lucky can two people be? Pretty darn lucky we agree! After leaving Thunder Bay we stumbled across the BEST hunting an fishing lodge EVER. After a tiring drive through rain and construction we were greeted by a very friendly young man that helped us get settled into our campground at Pine Sunset Lodge on Dinorwic Lake! Not only were we happy to be camped for a couple of days we were told that that night the owners of the camp were hosting a fish fry for everyone! YAY no cooking and no cleaning for the night! The fish fry was AWESOME and we had a chance to meet with the fellow fishermen that we would be camping with over the next few days! The next morning Sharon, owner and fishing guide, invited to Play. Day One consisted of fishing with one of the best guides Marshall has been with and, my first! Sharon took us out to some of her favorite hot spots! We had the time of our life...think of them and our time at Dinorwic often! We are both afraid that we will not find another place as wonderful and as welcoming as Pine Sunset Lodge! Kristine and Marshall Jason Mitchell Outdoors. Air times will be posted in our Newsletter and Pine Sunset Lodge offers many options. Was talking to my wife about doing another fly-in trip but after discussing how comfortable we are at PSL and knowing the lake so well we both decided to forget it. That and the many more adventures that still await made it a no brainer. PSL is where we will stay. Mitch and Sharon are the best. Richard Pine Sunset Lodge is the place to be. I will be there next year again. Bill
