3 EDITO Dear International Student, We are now living in a world where the mobility and the ability are adapting the various contexts of high values. Therefore Rennes 2 University particularly encourages, enhances and welcomes to international exchanges. For us internationalisation means the implementation of European directives concerning to academic programmes and degrees. The graduate and post graduate studies are going to be organised following three main stages, harmonised throughout Europe. 1. Bachelor (a three year degree program) 2. Master (a five year degree program) 3. Doctorate (a eight year degree program) Currently we are in the process of finalising this reform. The present hand book will not include the description of the courses. However, this is a turning point for the simplifying the system therefore the exchange would be more simple and other side the contents of the study program will not vary. This hand book will present you all the practical information which will make you feel at home in our University and region. You will find information on the location and the city of Rennes, to prepare your stay comfortable in France, also to the consideration of various practical matters such as Accommodation, Admission etc. We sincerely hope that you will be as happy to stay and study with us; therefore we are here to welcome you. 4 RENNES AN OVERVIEW OF RENNES 2 UNIVERSITY. There are two Universities in Rennes, among several other institutions for higher education. Rennes 2 university is structured around five faculties of high national and European standard: Languages ; Social Science ; Sciences humaines ; Art, Literature and communication ; Sports and Physical Education. It is attended by roughly students, over three campuses. Rennes 2 is particularly keen on developing international relations and welcoming students from various countries and backgrounds. Today, roughly 1000 students are non French, and come from countries as diverse as India, China, USA or several European countries. 21 Languages are taught at the University of Rennes 2, a factor which understandably makes it a hub of an international research and cooperation; it has the double advantage of being anchored in a historical and regional academic tradition, but also of being oriented towards the future in the dynamic region of Bretagne. There are altogether students in Residing in Rennes, and this contributes make the city exceptionally lively, culture oriented and youthful atmosphere. 2

7 BEFORE LIVING YOUR COUNTRY Very important : Before living your country be sure that you are carrying all necessary documents ( health insurance, recent passport size photos, photocopies of certificates and diplomas and all the necessary forms duly filled. Health insurance. Passport size photos. Photocopies of certificates and diplomas. A copy accommodation application form for the hostel room reservation. An Exchange certificate. Application form for the exchange student. A medical certificate duly signed and sealed of the register medical practitioner/ doctor. 5

8 DESTINATION RENNES ARRIVING TO THE CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT (CDG) Direct TGV Trains to Rennes from the Airport, you will go to the railway station, Terminal 2(CDG 2) from where you could buy the ticket for Rennes. The journey time from the Airport to Rennes by high Speed Train(TGV) is around 3 hours. STEPING IN SIDE PARIS You could also go to the centre of Paris by taking the chartered bus (Navette) from the Airport to the Railway station of Montparnasse (Gare de Montparnass). The ticket fare of the chartered bus will cost you around 12 and it will take around 80 minutes. You have to get off from the bus to the last station which is Railway station of Montparnasse( Gare de Montparnasse). RAILWAY STATION From the railway station of Montparnasse, you could take the high speed train for Rennes in every half an hour from 7 am to in the night. The journey time from the Railway station of Montparnasse to Rennes is around 2 hours and 15 Minutes. If you are arriving to the Orly Airport. You take the chartered bus directly from the Airport to the Railway station of Montparnasse (Gare de Monparnasse). The ticket will cost around 8. The service of the bus in every 15 minutes. The journey time is around 20 minutes according to the Traffic. 6

9 ARRIVING IN RENNES BY PLANE You are coming directly to the Airport of Saint Jacques Rennes. The Airport is situated 8 km, away from the city of Rennes. You take a Taxi that will cost around 20. For more information about the Airports you can find on the wed site. TRAIN You can consult on the web site of the SNCF: The price of the train ticket Paris Rennes is 2 nd Class is around 50. If you are under 25 year, you can obtain 25% reduction on the ticket, but you have to show your identity card in the train which prove that you are below 25 years. If you are below 26 years then you can buy a reduction card of SNCF which gives 50% reduction for every journey. The card will be valid for a year. For the reduction card you should have a Passport or stamped size photo and an identity card for the proof of age. The price of discount card is 41. COMING BY BUS You wish to come by bus to Rennes from your home country, you could find the information on this website to know more that it is possible from your home town or not. CAR If you are coming by car via Paris then take highway A10 Direction Bordeaux Nantes, afterwards direction Mans and Rennes. 7

10 After arrived in Rennes what step you must take You must contact to the international relations service office to the 4 th Floor in the president building, office P 402, Full fill all the administrative formalities. A student permit for long term stay If you are staying more then three months, in this case, you have to apply for the long term stay permit to the Prefecture of Rennes. The student who is staying more then three months will get a temporary student staying permit. The duration of this permit depends on the duration of your study period. The period of the temporary student staying permit could be for a year maximum and it is renewable every year. The student who is coming from a European Union community could stay in France for a period of three months; simply you have to show your passport which should be valid for the next three months. If you continuing your stay after passing three months then you have to apply a student permit for a long term stay, to the prefecture which is free of cost. The documents you need for applying a student permit for a long term stay. 1. The copy of your passport. 2. A proof of your social security passport size photograph. 4. A proof of your financial situation that you have sufficient funds for period you are staying minimum 400 per month. 5. If you are scholarship holder then you do not need to show any funds. 6. The copy of student identity card of Rennes 2 University. 7. A copy of medical certificate. 8. A copy of residence contract. 8

11 DURING YOUR STAY IN RENNES IN CASE OF LOST OR THEFT THE OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS. The moment you come to know that you have lost your document or theft it by some body, please follow the instruction given below. 1. Find out that which documents are missing. 2. Go to the police and make report that you have lost your document or theft by some body. 3. If you have lost your Passport, national identity card inform to the Embassy of your country, for getting the new Passport. 4. After getting the new passport, you apply for the duplicate student permit to the prefecture. 5. It is very important that you keep always extra photocopies of all your official documents to justify the process in case of lost or theft. 9

The taxi fare is around 18 + Luggage s. By Bus You will find bus stand in the front of railway station from where you take bus number 16 direction Beauregard; you will get off bus stand Villejean University :( Recteur Henry, Avenue de la Bataille Flandres Dunkerque. The bus fare is 1,10 which you can buy in the bus. 10

13 HEALTH CARE Social Security To non French students Every student who comes to stay in France has to prove that he/she has a social security for his health which covers maximum medical expenses. If you do not have a social security or a health insurance. In this case you have to get the social security from any of the following health Insurance company. A complementary health coverage provided by a mutual insurance which supplements up to 25 % ( in some cases 30 % ) of the basic health coverage. We strongly recommend that you personally register with a mutuelle complémentaire. If you are under 28 year on Oct. 1 of the academic year You are eligible for the social security ( Sécurité Sociale Etudiante). You will register for it when you enrol at the university. This will cover the greater part of your medical Expenses. If you wish to obtain a better coverage, we strongly advised you to register with a student mutuelle. If you are over 28 You will have to sign up for a contract providing both the basic coverage + the complementary coverage. There are several levels of refunding. Students from European Union countries If you are from any European country and coming under the international exchange programme, has to prove that you have a social security or a health insurance from your home country. 11

14 THE SERVICES OF RENNES 2 UNIVERSITY HAUTE BRETAGNE The central library of the university, The multimedia library for foreign languages, All the students of Rennes 2 University can register for obtaining library Services by presenting the student identity card for issuing books etc, to the library office. The library services Lecture on the place. Issuing books for the home is strictly personal. In the Campus of Villejean, there are several workshops are open to the students, for the musical activities like chorus, orchestra, big band, dance, theatre and the arts of the tale and creative writing skills. Every academic year bring a small season of concert, therefore we have a very special auditorium Le Tambour, for the concerts and the gallery Arts & essai for arrange a number of contemporary art exhibitions. 15 Sports Activities At the university of Rennes 2, students access the large number of sports activities, individually or collective, indoor and open air sports not less then 37 sports activities run by SIUAPS( Inter-university Services for physical and sports activities). Phone no , THE UNIVERSITY RESTAURANTS The University restaurants (RU) are open Monday to Friday evening and for the week end you will find the information on the notice board in the restaurant. In the university restaurants you will have the choice of food is possible and apart from that cafeteria and fast food services are available. The price of one time food in the university restaurant is 2, 60. You can buy the tickets for the food to the cash counter of the restaurant by presenting the student identity card. 16 LIVE IN RENNES Climate The climate in Bretagne is almost the classic oceanic climates. The Bretagne is known for its soft seasons; soft winter with short term freezing days, soft spring and premature, the warm summer are very rare with thunderstorm.
