1 Section 1 Lesson 1 Three Verb Parts Most verbs show action. Verbs also tell when the action is happening in the present or in the past. There are three special parts of a verb. We call them present, past, and past participle. The present form of a verb shows the action happening now. Present: work I work hard every day. The past form of a verb shows action happening in the past. Past: worked I worked hard last week. The past participle form of a verb always needs a helping verb. 2 Lesson 1 Irregular Verbs Most past and past participle verbs are formed by adding ed. But some are not. A past or past participle verb that does not end in ed is an irregular verb. Irregular means not formed in the usual way. Make irregular verbs into their past and past participle forms by changing their spellings. Study these words until you have learned these five irregular verbs and their parts. Present Past Past Participle bite bit bitten choose chose chosen say said said sink sank sunk hold held held You probably noticed that sometimes the past and past participle forms are the same. But remember: in a sentence, the past participle form must always have a helping verb. Write the correct irregular verb from the list above on the line. 8. 7 Lesson 2 A run-on sentence is two or more sentences incorrectly written as one sentence. Tony wanted new ice skates he sold sweet corn from his garden. I read a story about Glen he was sick and could not go to sleep, so he sang. To correct run-on sentences, add capital letters and ending punctuation marks. Tony wanted new ice skates.
