PROGRAMOVERVIEW CommunityCounselingOption(M.S.) The Community Counseling Option leading to the M.S. in Counseling, Option: Community Counseling prepares individualsforprofessionalcounselingrolesinavarietyofmentalhealth,community,andhumanservicesettings.the emphasisintheprogramisondevelopingprofessionalswithproficiencyincounselingandrelatedrolesandfunctions. Graduatesfromthisprogramhavefoundemploymentinchild/adolescentguidancecenters,communitymentalhealth clinics,domesticviolencecenters,rehabilitationcenters,youthandfamilyservices,hospitals,andprivatepractice. ThecurriculumintheCommunityCounselingOptionisdesignedtomeettheacademicrequirementssetforthinthe regulations of the Oklahoma Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Act. After obtaining 3000 hours of supervised, post degree experience, and a passing score on the LPC test, graduates are eligible for licensure as professional counselorsinoklahoma. SchoolCounselingOption(M.S.) TheSchoolCounselingOptionleadingtotheM.S.inCounseling,Option:SchoolCounselingisdesignedforstudents whoareinterestedincareersascounselorsinpublicschools,servingstudents,teachers,andparents.thecoursework fortheschoolcounselingoptionisdesignedtomeettheschoolcounselorcertificationrequirementsforthestateof Oklahoma. Candidates for certification as a school counselor in the state of Oklahoma must also receive a passing scoreonstatecertificationexams.uponsuccessfulcompletionofthedegree,thecertificationprofessionalportfolio submissions,and certification testing requirements, candidates can apply for school counselor certification through OSU sofficeofprofessionaleducation.youmaycontacttheofficeofprofessionaleducationat325willardhall, ;orvisittheirwebsiteatwww.home.okstate.edu/peu. COREPROGRAMOBJECTIVES StudentsinthisProgramwillgainknowledgeandunderstandingof: 1. Professionalidentity,includinghistoryoftheprofession,rolesofcounselors,organizationalstructures,ethics, standards,credentialing,publicpolicy,advocacy,andemergingissuesintheprofession. 2. Socialandculturaldiversity,includingmulticulturaltrends,counselingstrategies,theories,competencies,and contextualfactorsforworkingwithdiversepopulations,andcounselor srolesinsocialjusticeandadvocacy. 3. Humangrowthanddevelopment,includingtheoriesoflearning,development,andtransition,bothnormaland abnormal,forindividualsandfamiliesacrossthelifespan. 4. Careerandlifestyledevelopment,includingtheories,models,assessmentandcounselingstrategies,information resources,programplanningandadministration,andemergingissuesinachangingworld of work. 5. Helpingrelationships,includingcounselorandconsultantcharacteristics,andcounseling,consulting,and systemstheories,processes,andskillsforworkingwithfamilies,children,andadults. 6. Assessment,includingbasicprinciplesoftestingandassessment,caseconceptualization,diagnosis,diversity factorsrelatedtoassessment,andindividualandgroupapproachestoassessmentandevaluation. 8. Researchandprogramevaluation,includingresearchmethods,basicstatistics,needsassessment,andprogram evaluation. COMPETENCIESFORSCHOOLCOUNSELORS Inadditiontotheabove,theschoolcounselingprogramhasadoptedthefollowingcompetenciesbasedonthe OklahomaCompetenciesforCertificationofSchoolCounselors.( Candidatesforcertificationwillgainknowledgeandunderstandingof: 1. Humandevelopmentinordertoprovideacomprehensive,developmentalguidanceandcounselingprogram. 2. Howtofacilitatetheeducationandcareerdevelopmentofindividualstudentstohelpallachievesuccess. 6. Formalandinformalassessmenttoprovideinformationaboutandtostudents,tomonitorstudentprogressand torecommendchangestothestudent seducationalenvironment. 7. Consultationprocesseswithparentsandschoolpersonnel,howtoprovideprofessionalexpertiseandestablish collaborativerelationshipsthatfosterasupportsystemforstudents,parents,andthecommunity. 8. Humandiversityasitappliestoprovidingequitableguidancecounselingservicesforallstudentsandpromotinga climateofmutualrespectthathelpsstudentsvaluethemselvesandothers. 9. Theneedforstrongandpositivetieswiththehomeandthecommunitytopromotestudents growthinschool andbeyondtheschoolsetting. 10. Professionalethicalcodes,theimportanceofprofessionaldevelopmentandtheneedtoworkwithcolleaguesto advancetheprofession. GENERALPROGRAMINFORMATION TwoCampuses,OneProgram Courses for both options are offered on both the Stillwater and the Tulsa campuses. Students admitted to the Programmaytakeclassesoneithercampus. Ashuttlebus(BOB)isavailabletostudentscommutingtoeithercampusforclasses.Studentsarechargedanominal feetoridethebus.note:studentsenrolledprimarilyonthetulsacampusshouldcarefullyreadeachsectionofthis HandbookaspolicyfortheTulsacampusmaybedifferent. CourseworkandPracticum/InternshipRequirements TheProgramincludesabroadgeneralpreparationincounseling,humandevelopment,diagnosisofhumanproblems, professional issues and ethics, social and cultural foundations, group process, appraisal, research, and career development,andspecialtycoursesinbothschoolandcommunitycounseling. To fulfill the degree requirements, students in the Community Counseling Option must complete a minimum of 60 graduatecredithoursofcoursework(includingpracticumandinternship),andincludingathesisoranelectivecourse that is designated the student s creative component. This includes 100 clock hours of practicum and 600 hours of internship.studentsinthecommunitycounselingoptionmaytake2electivecourses(6credithours)aspartofthe60 credit hours required for graduation. However, if a student in the Community Option chooses to complete a thesis insteadofacreativecomponent,6hoursofthesiscreditwillbetakeninsteadofelectives. StudentsintheSchoolCounselingOptionneedtocompletetheApplicationforProfessionalEducationform.Those
6 Handbook6 who are already certified teachers, check box B; all others check box C, and submit to the Professional Education Council. Students in the School Counseling Option must complete a minimum of 57 graduate credit hours of coursework as well as a creative component. This includes 100 clock hours of practicum and 600 clock hours of internship.ifastudentwishestocompleteathesisinsteadofacreativecomponent,thestudentmustcomplete63 graduatecredithours.inaddition,studentsintheschoolcounselingoptionmustcompleteaportfolio,whichcanbe usedasthecreativecomponent. IfstudentsintheSchoolCounselingOptionwishtoalsopursuelicensureasaprofessionalcounselor(LPC),theymust completeatotalof60hoursofcourseworkthatmeetthecontentrequirementsofthelicensingboard.theymustalso workcloselywiththeiradvisorandcommitteeintheselectionofappropriatepracticumandinternshipsites. It takes a minimum of two years of full time graduate work (including two summer semesters) to complete the CounselingProgram,eitheroption. PortfolioRequirementforStudentsintheSchoolCounselingOption InOklahomaStateUniversity'sProfessionalEducationPrograms,aportfolioisasetofmaterials(called artifacts ) thatprovideevidenceoftheindividual'slearning,growth,anddevelopmenttowardbecomingaprofessional educator.thesecollectionsofauthentic,learnerspecificdocumentsarealsoacknowledgmentthatthedevelopment ofaprofessionaleducatorisanindividualizedprocess.theyreflectthestudent'sprogressoveraperiodoftimeand provideusefulinformationinassessingthesuccessoftheprogramsinmeetingtheirgoals.theportfoliohasfour majoruses: Documentingactivelearningbystudentsintheirprofessionalgrowthanddevelopment. Providinggraduatesoftheprogramswithacollectionofrelevantmaterialsfortheiruseintheprofession and/orforuseasapersonalmarketingtoolinseekingemployment. AssessingtheProfessionalEducationDegreeProgram animportantsourceofdatatogiveamore comprehensiveandcompletepictureoftheprogram. ImprovingtheProfessionalEducationDegreeProgram revealedpatternsofsuccessand/ordeficiencyserve asfociforchangesintheprogramtoensureitsrelevanceandtheattainmentofitsgoals. Schoolcounselingcandidatesshouldconsiderthisportfolioasunique,fluidandchanging,anevolvingdisplayoflifelonglearning.Theportfolioisdefinedasadocumentedprofileofanindividual saccomplishments,learningand strengthsrelatedtotheprogramstandardsandoklahomastateuniversity scoreconceptsandgoals.theportfoliois requiredbytheoklahomacommissionforteacherpreparationforlicensureand,forpurposesofinstitutional accreditation,isaunitofmeasurewhichpresentsevidencethattheinstitutionisprovidinginitial,on going,and focusedopportunitiesandavenueswhichleadtostudentachievementofcompetencies,standards,andoutcomes. PortfolioSubmission1forSchoolCounselingOption SchoolcounselingstudentsshouldnotethattheinitialportfoliosubmissionisdueatthetimethePlanofStudyis submitted,whichispriortotakingthe17thhourofcredit.submission1requiresatleastthreeartifactswith accompanyingreflectionpapersforthreedifferentrowsoftheportfoliomatrix.thestudentmaychooseanythree rows.theportfolioshouldbesubmittedintriplicate(3cds)tojonthomasintheprofessionaleducationunitin WillardHallontheStillwatercampus. GradeAppeals FacultymembersofOklahomaStateUniversityshouldcommunicatetostudentsearlyinthetermaclearstatementof thegradingpracticesandproceduresthatwillbeusedtodeterminethefinalgrade.ifastudentbelievesthose practicesandprocedureswerenotconsistentlyandaccuratelyfollowedwhenthefacultymemberdeterminedthe finalgrade,thestudentshallhavetherighttoappealthecasetotheacademicappealsboardwithinfourmonths afterthedatethegradewasassigned(receivedbytheregistrar),orsixweeksafterthestudentbeginsanew semester,whichevercomesfirst,ifinformaldiscussionsfailtoresolvetheissue.
