CHOOSE Your Own SCHEDULE MARY S GOOD NEWS Based on Luke 1:26-56 One day a young woman named Mary heard some wonderful news. An angel said, Mary, God is with you. Mary was surprised that the angel was talking to her. She was afraid. But the angel said, Don t be afraid, Mary. I have good news for you. You will have a baby. You will name the baby Jesus. He will grow to be a great man. Mary did not understand what the angel was telling her. The angel explained everything to her again. The angel told Mary, God is making this happen. Nothing is impossible with God. Mary said, I will do what God wants me to do. Then the angel left. Mary was going to be Jesus mother! She wanted to tell someone this good news. Mary hurried to tell her cousin Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard that Mary was going to be Jesus mother, Elizabeth was happy! Mary was so happy! She sang a thank-you song to God. GROUP TIME Move and sing together. Play a Christmas carol from a personal Christmas CD. Ask the boys and girls to listen for what the song says about Jesus. Say the Life Verse. Place the Bible marker in the Bible at Luke 1. Open the Bible and read the verse. Choose one child to repeat the verse to a friend. Prompt that child to say the verse to another friend. Continue until everyone has a turn. Tell the Bible story. Tell the kids that today s Bible story is about someone who heard good news. Direct them to listen for what God wanted this person to do. Open your Bible to Luke 1 and tell the story in your own words. Recall the Bible story. Show the Teaching Picture. Ask the children to tell you something they remember from the story. Choose one child to point to Mary in the picture and another child to point to the angel. Review the Life Point and pray. Comment that God loves us, so He sent Jesus to be born. He chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus. Pray, thanking God for sending Jesus and for the Christmas season to celebrate His birth. Wrap it up. Give each child a bell. Play a Christmas carol from your CD, and encourage the kids to play along with the music. Bible Focus: Mary traveled to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Invite the boys and girls to build roads with the blocks and drive the cars on the roads. Tell the Bible story as the children build and drive. Ask how they think Mary traveled to Elizabeth s house. Say the Life Verse. Pray and thank God for Jesus. Show the Teaching Picture and talk about the good news Mary heard. Guide the kids to role-play preparing for and taking care of a baby. Encourage the children to decorate their tubes with crayons, markers, and stickers. Tell the Bible story as the kids work. As each child finishes, show her how to whisper through the tube. Note: Caution the children to only whisper into someone s ear (never shout). Encourage them to use the tube to whisper the Life Verse to one another. (Nature and Science) Notes Cardboard tubes, markers, crayons, stickers BONUS ACTIVITIES RECORD VOICES Invite the kids to sing Christmas songs and say today s Life Verse as you capture their voices with a recording device. As the children listen to their recorded voices, remind them that Mary heard an angel say God chose her to be Jesus mother. MAKE A CHRISTMAS COLLAGE Cut pieces from a variety of Christmas gift wrap paper (no secular themes) and ribbon. Encourage the kids to glue pieces of the paper and ribbon onto construction paper. Comment that the paper and ribbon remind you of Christmas. Remark that we celebrate Jesus birth at Christmas and that God sent an angel to tell Mary that Baby Jesus would be born. CLEAN UP Play a Christmas carol from a Christmas CD to signal time to clean up. Encourage the kids to help straighten the room. Give each child a specific job to do. 6 SING TOGETHER Sing these words to the tune London Bridge : (1) God sent Mary some good news, some good news, some good news. God sent Mary some good news. Thank You, God. (2) You will have a baby boy, baby boy, baby boy. You will have a baby boy, said the angel. (3) Jesus is the baby s name, baby s name, baby s name. Jesus is the baby s name, said the angel. (4) Mary was the one God chose, one God chose, one God chose. Mary was the one God chose as Jesus mother. SAY THE Open the Bible to Luke 1:31. Touch the verse and say it aloud: You will have a son and call Him Jesus. Luke 1:31. Ask the boys and girls to repeat the verse with you several times. PRAY Pray: Thank You, God, for choosing Mary to be the mother of Jesus. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to us as a baby. BIBLE-LEARNING ACTIVITIES Young children learn best when they have freedom to choose an activity which interests them and freedom of movement to change to another activity when they are ready. A. Find the hidden name. Using a white crayon, print the name Jesus on sheets of white paper. Offer watercolor paints and challenge a child to find the name hidden on the page by painting over it. Ask what name the children see. Talk about Mary being Jesus mother. B. Build baby furniture. Add a doll and baby blanket, if available, to the wooden blocks. Invite the kids to stack the blocks to build a crib for the baby. Talk about how a family feels when they hear they will have a baby. Ask about any children who have baby brothers or sisters in their families. Then talk about how Mary felt about her good news. C. Tell good news. Place play telephones on a table. Comment that Mary shared her good news with her cousin Elizabeth; since they did not have phones, Mary went to visit her cousin. Encourage the children to pretend to call each other and tell some good news. Suggest they also tell a friend that God chose Mary to be Jesus mother. D. Sing songs together. Gather musical instruments, such as bells and rhythm sticks. Play a Christmas carol on a CD as the kids play instruments and sing. Comment that Mary sang a song of praise to God. Pause so the children can trade instruments. CLEAN UP Ask the kids to help you clean the room and put away the materials. Give each child a specific job to do. Thank the children for their cooperation. PLAY FIND YOUR PARTNER Make up rhymes like the following to review the Bible story. Ask the kids to supply the missing word. An angel came to give some clues; he told Mary God s good. (news) The angel who had news to tell, we know his name was. (Gabriel) The angel said Mary was the chosen one, she would give birth to God s. (Son) Play I Spy if you have more time while waiting for parents to arrive. DISMISS Give each child his Activity Page and belongings. Thank parents for bringing their child to church today.
