Boys and girls will come to know that God always keeps His promises, knows everything, is real and can do all things, and wants us to worship Him only. 4 Week of June 5, 2011 God Promised Abraham and Sarah a Baby Teacher Connection Read Genesis 12:1-4. Although we might have selected a dynamic young couple for such a challenging adventure, God chose a 75-yearold husband and his 65-year-old wife. When God called Abram to leave his homeland, Abram responded in obedience and faith. On a piece of paper, list the seven promises that accompanied God s call. Abram and Sarai left familiar faces and scenes and headed toward a destination known only to God. Their steps were guided by the One who is faithful to keep every promise He makes. Read more about Abram and Sarai in Hebrews 11:8-19. Years passed; Abram and Sarai remained childless. Read Genesis 16; what did they do? Their sin produced serious consequences, but their actions did not deter God from keeping His promise in His time. God repeated His promises when Abram was 99 years old, identifying Himself as El Shaddai, God Almighty, the God of power. Read Genesis 17:1-3. How did Abram respond to his encounter with the God of power? Read Genesis 17:4-21. God gave Abram and Sarai new names. The name Abraham means father of a multitude, and Sarah means princess. God told Abraham three times that Sarah would be the mother of his son (v. 16, 19, and 21)! God gave the baby a name, and He announced that baby Isaac would be born within a year. How did Abraham react to the idea of a 100-year-old man and his 90-year-old wife having a baby? In Genesis 21:1-8, we read about the birth of Isaac. God kept His promise. In generations that followed, God continued to keep every promise He made to Abraham. The foundational truth of Genesis 21:1 is expressed in the Bible phrase God did what He promised to do. Print these words on an index card and read them often this week. How is your attitude different when you teach with the assurance that God keeps His promises? 5 Connecting with Bible Content in minutes Boys and girls will hear the Bible story and verse as they complete the activities. They will know a new Bible truth as they discover God always keeps His promises. Draw Yourself Center: Creative Art God promised Abraham and Sarah a baby. They named him Isaac. Isaac means laughter. Materials: Bible, Kindergarten Connection weekly pages, paper, markers > > Encourage kindergartners to choose a weekly page and marker. Say: Find the missing words and print them in the spaces. > > Take time to read to the boys and girls the Bible fact on today s weekly page. > > Refer to the weekly page and read the Bible word baby. Comment: Abraham and Sarah named their baby Isaac. Isaac means laughter. Guide children to use the paper and markers to draw pictures of themselves laughing. > > As children draw themselves, tell the Point to the Bible verse on the weekly page. Read it with each child. Ask: What did God promise? (Abraham and Sarah would have a baby.) What happened? (They had baby Isaac.) Invite children to count the buttons they used for each word. Use the Bible marker to read today s Bible verse. Ask: Did God keep His promise to Abraham and Sarah? (Yes, God always keeps His promises.) Care for Babies Center: Dramatic Play Sarah had a baby boy. Materials: Bible; Teaching Picture (pack item 1); Cards: Baby Care (pack item 17a-b); four dolls; doll clothes; baby bottles; baby toys; small bucket or tub; washcloth; empty travel-size bottles of baby shampoo, soap, lotion, and powder; towels; baby blankets; rocker > > Arrange cards and items into four areas. Place appropriate items with each card. For example, place baby bottles and a rocker with the cards Feeding and Rocking. > > Display the teaching picture. Invite children to sit with you in a circle on the floor. Open your Bible and tell the Ask: Who was the baby in our story? (Isaac) Say: We have four baby care stations where you can role-play caring for a baby. Walk to each station, pick up the card and read it with the children. Say: All of these words end in ing. They are all ways to care for a baby. > > Evenly divide the children among the four stations. After children have played in a station for a while, lead them to move to a different station. Materials: Bible, extra copy of Kindergarten Connection weekly page, assorted blocks, boxes, paper towel tubes, books about babies > > After children arrive at the center, talk about furniture that is needed in a baby s room. Include items such as a baby bed, changing table, rocking chair, and chest of drawers. > > Encourage kindergartners to use the materials to build baby room items. > > Children may want to refer to the books about babies. Remark: These books and the baby furniture you are building remind me of today s Bible story. Open your Bible and tell the Show the teaching picture on the extra copy of the Kindergarten Connection weekly page. Ask: How did God keep His promise to Abraham and Sarah? (They had baby boy.) Say: God always keeps His promises. Taste and Graph Baby Food Center: Nature and Science Sarah had a baby named Issac. Materials: Bible; Allergy Alert (CD); Baby Food Graph (CD); Bible Markers (CD); baby food: peas, pears, apples, plums; plastic spoons; small paper plates; pencils or markers > > Before class, print and post the allergy alert on the classroom door. Print the Baby Food Graph (one per child). > > Remind children to wash their hands. > > Give each child a small paper plate and a copy of the graph. Point to the word Peas on the baby food jar label. Place a spoonful of peas on each child s plate. After he tastes it, guide him to make an X in the Yes column if he liked it and in the No column if he didn t. Continue with the rest of the baby food. Talk about each child s graph. > > Tell the Talk about the Bible verse with each child. Bonus Ideas Make a Baby Picture Mobile Provide magazines, scissors, construction paper, glue, hole punch, string, and coat hangers. Guide each child to find four or five pictures of babies and cut them out. Suggest the children glue their pictures on construction paper and carefully cut out each one. Help kindergartners punch a hole at the top of each picture. Show them how to attach a piece of string to each picture and to the coat hanger to make a mobile. Tell the Match Family Stickers Cut construction paper into bookmark-shaped rectangles. Attach a sticker from My Family stickers (see p. 7) to each bookmark. Be sure there are two matching bookmarks for the dad, mother, etc. Guide children to sort and match the stickers. Tell the Using the Learner Guide How are you using the Kindergarten Connection weekly pages? Remember these tips. * Show parents and kindergartners the Bible story and picture on the front page. * Take time to review the Bible words and their meanings. Read the Bible verse. * Talk about the Bible fact. * Help children complete the activity page. * Point out the at-home activity to each parent. * When children are absent, send them their weekly pages so they will know what they missed in Sunday School minutes Help the children learn responsibility and care of the church through cleanup. Play I Worship When I Sing (track 17) to help kindergartners know it is time to put away materials. Say: Listen for how to clean up. God Promised Abraham and Sarah a Baby Genesis 12:2-3; 17:1-8,15-17,19,21; 21:1-8 Materials: Bible; Teaching Picture (pack item 1); Bible Word Cards: baby, promise (pack item 14a-d); Book: Who? (pack item 20); Bible Markers (CD); beanbag; nine pieces of white construction paper; marker; baby doll; rocker; Music and More CD; CD player Prepare. Print a Bible marker for each child. Print one word of the Bible verse on each piece of paper. Place the rocker and baby doll in the group-time area. Toss and walk the Bible verse. Place the nine pieces of paper facedown on the floor. Invite a child to toss a beanbag on the first piece of paper (left to right) and turn it faceup. Help the child read the word. Repeat until all words are read. Guide the children to read the whole verse together. Guide a child to walk across the papers as the class reads each word. Repeat several times. Sing. Play Always (track 1). Ask: What can we learn from this song? (God always keeps His promises.) Hear Bible truths. Display the Bible word cards and explain the definitions. Open the Bible to Genesis 12. Make the story come alive to kindergartners by using an expressive voice as you tell it. Abram and his wife Sarai (SEHR igh) had moved to a new land. Abram was 75 years old, and Sarai was 65 years old. They had no children. When Abram was 99 years old, God spoke to him. God made a promise to Abram. God told Abram He would make Abram s family huge. God changed Abram s name. God said, Your name will no longer be Abram. Your new name will be Abraham because you will be the father of many nations. This meant Abraham would have many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. People everywhere would know that Abraham s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were part of his family. God changed Sarai s name, too. Her new name would be Sarah. God told Abraham that a year later his wife Sarah would have a son. Abraham laughed at the idea that Sarah would have a baby when she was 90 and he was 100 years old! But he knew that God kept His promises. God told Abraham to name their son Isaac. The name Isaac means laughter. A year later, Sarah had a baby boy, just as God had said she would. Abraham and Sarah named their son Isaac as God had told them to do. Abraham had a party to celebrate the birth of Isaac. God had kept His promise to Abraham. God did what He had promised to do. God blessed Abraham and Sarah with the special gift of a baby. The baby made them very happy. Know Bible truths. Show today s teaching picture. Say: I am looking for a friend who can sit in the rocker, rock the baby, and tell me something he or she remembers from the story. Repeat until the story is reviewed. Do Bible truths. Ask: What can we remember about God from today s story? (God always keeps His promises.) Pray: Dear God, thank You for always keeping Your promises. Read the book Who? as you wait for parents to arrive. >> Family Connection Distribute the Parent (June) and Bible Markers (CD) to each child. Encourage parents to say the verse with their child this week. Ask parents to bring an empty cereal box to class next week. Send an as a reminder.
