1 Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency Information and Application The University of Kansas Hospital offers a twelve month post-pharm.d. training program. The residency in pharmacy practice is defined as an organized, directed, postgraduate training program that centers on development of the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to pursue rational drug therapy. The purpose of the residency is to provide educational and training experiences for pharmacists in the fundamentals of exemplary contemporary pharmacy practice in an integrated health care system. Through various clinical, practice management and pharmaceutical practice training segments, the residency instills a philosophy of practice that embraces the concept that pharmacists must be accountable for optimum drug therapy outcomes and act as leaders in advancing care of patients. Residency Program Purpose Statement: To provide postgraduate training in the provision of direct patient care to multiple patient populations. Residents will develop effective written and verbal communication skills in order to provide education to, and interaction with, patients, students, and a multi-disciplinary team of health care providers. To help develop leadership skills, in preparation for their own clinical pharmacy practice, the resident will demonstrate and continue to develop their leadership skills through professionalism and focusing on quality improvement. 4 Residency Specifics HSPA Residency Director: Rick Couldry, RPh, MS PGY1 Residency Director and HSPA Residency Coordinator: Samaneh Wilkinson, PharmD, MS PGY1 Residency Coordinator: Christopher Bell, PharmD, MS Number of Residents: 14 PGY1 (4) PGY2 HSPA (3 first year, 3 second year) PGY2 Drug Information (2) PGY2 Hematology/Oncology (2) Experiential Rotations Each resident will complete 10 one-month clinical experience rotations, a six-week practice management rotation, and a six-week drug information rotation. Core rotations are detailed above, and a list of the available electives is attached. Projects/Presentation Residents are required to complete a project for a project for the poster presentation at the University Health System Consortium Annual Conference at the Midyear Clinical Meeting (December) and an oral presentation at Midwest Residency Conference (May). Staffing Each resident will be assigned to a clinical staffing area will be required to staff this area every other weekend and one evening every other week. Teaching Residents will have the opportunity to precept University of Kansas students on rotation in clinical and administrative areas. Residents will also have the opportunity to gain teaching experience to small classrooms through a lecture series for rotation students. An optional ACPE accredited Teaching Certificate Program is available for residents with an interest in teaching. The Teaching Certificate program includes seminars on how to teach, experiential components for didactic and small group teaching, and compiling a teaching portfolio. 4
5 Travel During their first year, residents will attend the Midwest Residency Conference. The second year, residents will attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, the ASHP Leadership Conference, and the Midwest Residency Conference. Travel expenses and professional leave days will be provided by the residency. Master s Program Residents will receive a Master s of Science in Hospital Pharmacy from the University of Kansas. Thirty hours of coursework are required to be completed during the two year residency. Classes are taught through the Health Policy and Management Department, College of Business, and by administrators in the pharmacy department. The majority of the classes will be offered during the evenings as to not interfere with rotations. 5
