ABORIGINAL GOVERNANCE AND PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS developing effective leadership and partnerships
About the programs GOVERNANCE The University Credit Certificate in Aboriginal Governance and Partnership programs provides students with the necessary understanding and skills to lead, work, or partner effectively with Indigenous and non-indigenous organizations, communities, businesses, and governments. The program of study centres on developing knowledge while increasing analytical and applied skills suited to the unique governance issues and opportunities facing Indigenous peoples and their non-indigenous partners today. The initial program began running in Strong support for Aboriginal governance and partnership programs in the Faculty of Native Studies was expressed during four extensive rounds of consultation. This support has continued at local, regional, and provincial levels, and includes Indigenous community leaders, government representatives, industry, and other University of Alberta programs outside the Faculty of Native Studies. PARTNERSHIP The curriculum features the theory and practice behind relationship-building and partnership between Aboriginal and non-aboriginal entities, including best practices for: successful partnerships leadership government management and administration business growth for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit organizations, and their non-indigenous counterparts.

Building Relationships With over eight years of programming, the Certificate in Aboriginal Governance and Partnership has partnered with over 30 organizations to engage successfully and graduate 46 students (and counting!), who are continuing to apply their knowledge in Indigenous governance and relationship-building through positions of leadership in their communities (chiefs, administrators), in government (Alberta, NWT), and in Indigenous and non- Indigenous organizations. Over the last few years, many people who are working full-time have expressed interest in the AGP Certificate programs. Additionally, in light of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission s call to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, many working professionals are reaching out to the AGP Certificate programs to engage in this timely and relevant learning opportunity to increase knowledge regarding building better relationships among government, industry, and Indigenous communities. To address this need, we are transitioning the six-course Standalone AGP Certificate to blended/online delivery in order to increase access to programming. In addition to increasing connections through online and blended delivery, we are continuing to strengthen relationships guided by our original mandate of (1) engaging undergraduate degree students through our embedded certificate program; (2) providing alternative learning opportunities through the Standalone Certificate; (3) offering graduate-level programming specific to governance, social order, and relations with the Canadian state; (4) partnering with the Alberta School of Business through the Indigenous Partnership Development Program (IPDP); and (5) engaging in community-informed research. Shalene Jobin, PhD Director of Aboriginal Governance Programs Assistant Professor, Faculty of Native Studies

Our Students The Certificate of Aboriginal Governance and Partnership Program is a great opportunity for students in the Faculty of Native Studies to learn the forms of governance created and used by Indigenous peoples, and how they re distinguished from (historically) imposed governments. The negotiations methods and governance projects give students the opportunity to engage in the real-life application of what they ve learned. The certificate has given me the advantage of a larger variety of job opportunities, as the certificate has improved my knowledge base in areas of Aboriginal initiatives. This certificate program will be another tool for Indigenous students to build stronger communities and create leadership opportunities. Jenna Broomfield, Juris Doctor Candidate 2017 BA Native Studies and Certificate in Aboriginal Governance and Partnership
Our Students The Aboriginal Governance and Partnership Certificate offered me a chance to prepare myself to ensure that I will bring an Indigenous perspective to the workforce. This program presented me with a wonderful opportunity to meet Aboriginal professionals and Aboriginal government workers and to gain a valuable education in the sui generis that is Aboriginal governance at every level. I better understand the dynamics and infrastructure of First Nations government, which has helped me prepare to work with Aboriginal governments. Josh Littlechild BA Native Studies and Certificate in Aboriginal Governance and Partnership

Our Partners Our partnership with the Faculty of Native Studies AGP students is highly valued. The partnership puts us in touch with future leaders and leaves us with research that is always intelligent, reliable, and useful. In turn, we hope our students enjoy learning about and contributing to the workings of a modern quasi-judicial dispute resolution system whose main purpose is to strengthen Métis self-governance and identity.
