4 Raising the Participation Age (RPA) The government increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training, requiring them to continue until their 18th birthday from Raising the participation age (RPA) does not mean young people must stay in school; they will able to choose one of the following options post- 16: full-time education, such as school, college or home education; an apprenticeship; part-time education or training if they are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time (which is defined as 20 hours or more a week).

9 How to choose DO choose subjects that you think you will do well at; DO choose subjects that you think you will enjoy; DO find out as much as you can before making your choices; DO think about which of the three pathways is the most appropriate for you.

10 How not to choose DON T choose a subject because your friends choose it; you will probably be in different groups next year; DON T choose a subject because you like the teacher; you will probably have a different teacher next year; DON T choose to give up a subject because you don t like the teacher; you will probably have a different teacher next year; DON T choose a subject because someone told you it was easy; none of the subjects are harder or easier than the others.

11 Different Key Stage 4 qualifications GCSE courses: 9-1 grades or A*-G grades which are at Level or D-G grades and Level or A*-C grades V-Cert (Vocational Certificates): Distinction*, Distinction, Merit or Pass (equivalent to GCSE 9-4 or A*-C grades) Foundation Learning Tier: Entry Level 1, 2 or 3 (below, and at the lower end of the GCSE range)

12 Core Curriculum & Options Core = mathematics, English (both language and literature), science, PE, PDT Options = 4 additional choices (3 free choices ) 1 Option must be from geography, history, French, Spanish and computing (EBacc subjects)

13 What are EBacc subjects? The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) recognises those students that have studied a core of academic subjects English, mathematics, sciences (which includes computing), history or geography, and a language EBacc subjects are likely to become more important with employers and universities especially as there are also changes at A Level

14 Key Stage 4 Curriculum Pathways Helping to guide your subject choices

15 Green Pathway This is a flexible pathway which will be a combination of Entry Level, GCSE or other equivalent options. Students are likely to be currently working at GCSE grades 2-1. Students will achieve GCSE passes (or equivalent courses) which are expected to be at grades 4-1. Entry Level and GCSE Mathematics Entry Level and GCSEs in English Language and Literature Entry Level and GCSE Combined Science Three additional GCSE or equivalent courses Post-Year 11: Pre-Work Skills and other vocational qualifications e.g. Entry to Employment, BTECs, National Vocational Qualifications, Apprenticeships.

16 Blue Pathway Students following this pathway are likely to be currently working at GCSE grades 3-2. Students will achieve GCSE passes (or equivalent courses) which are expected to be at grades 5-3. GCSE Mathematics GCSEs in English Language and Literature GCSE Combined Science Four additional GCSE or equivalent courses including one subject from geography, history, French, Spanish and computing Post-Year 11: Vocational qualifications e.g. BTECs, National Vocational Qualifications, Apprenticeships or Advanced Apprenticeships, or A Levels or the International Baccalaureate at Braintree Sixth Form. This may be followed by a Higher Education degree course.

17 Yellow Pathway This is an academic pathway. Students likely to be currently working at grades 5-3. Students will achieve GCSE passes which are expected to be at grades 9-5. GCSE Mathematics GCSEs in English Language and Literature GCSE Sciences - biology, chemistry and physics Four additional GCSE courses including one subject from geography, history, French, Spanish and computing We strongly encourage students to study both a modern foreign language (French, Spanish) and either geography or history Post-Year 11: A Levels or the International Baccalaureate at Braintree Sixth Form. This may be followed by a Higher Education degree course.
