7 Steps for University-Wide Reviews Establish goals for the reviews. These depend on circumstances and objectives of each university Develop the criteria by which programs will be judged and outcomes decided Decide what information and data to use as a foundation for the reviews 7

8 Steps, continued Decide on the process and context for carrying out the reviews. How will the individual programs be involved? Develop a schedule and plan for carrying out the reviews Develop a plan for: receiving and evaluating the information from or about the individual programs formulating recommendations and outcomes 8

9 Communications and Action Plan Develop a plan for communicating the results to the university community and to external constituents Develop an action plan and schedule for implementing the findings and recommendations of the review 9

11 Goals Identify doctoral programs that will enhance the standing of Ohio State Identify weak, non-core programs and develop a plan for disinvesting in them Reallocate resources to the strongest programs 11

12 Process A three-way partnership of Graduate School, Academic Affairs, and the colleges Used data compiled for NRC survey plus additional information Each college submitted a report assessing its programs Graduate School and faculty review committee reviewed college reports and prepared findings and recommendations for the provost 12

13 Criteria for Judging the College Reports New or emerging opportunities where Ohio State can excel Gaining a competitive edge Improvements in addressing diversity New approaches to recruiting high-quality students Commitment of department and college to strengthening the program 13

14 University-Wide Findings Need to assess and improve structure and organization of the 21 doctoral programs in the biological and life sciences Need similar effort for earth and environmental sciences, which are spread across 8 colleges Implement advanced practice doctoral degrees in some professional and health programs so that Ph.D. programs can focus on research 14

15 Outcomes Enhance central fellowship stipends and multiyear support packages for the top 29 programs Formed Environmental Sciences Network and Life Sciences Network Supporting programs wanting to develop dual degree programs with international partners, professional master s, and other forward-looking efforts 15
