1 Criminal Justice 4600: National Investigative Strategies, Homeland Security, Terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction Instructor: Al Youngs, Esquire Phone: (720) Office Hours: By Appointment Only Mondays and Wednesdays 2:00pm-3:15pm, CN 205 Fall 2009 Teaching Assistant: London Moffatt Phone: (541) Course Description: Topics include Terrorism, Homeland Security, issues involving the two and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This course identifies the fundamental and underlying reasons why America is a target for terrorists and the need to redefine the security of the nation. The course compares and contrasts various international terrorist groups and their respective ideologies. Additionally, the course will define the various government agencies that are involved in the War on Terrorism. From an historical perspective students will come to appreciate the ideological basis for terrorism, begin to understand the differences between the various active terrorist organizations, and acquire a basic framework for discussing WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) issues. Instructors Intent: It is my intent for every student in this class to successfully achieve their learning objectives for the course and enjoy the academic experience presented in Criminal Justice Student participation is not only encouraged, but is expected. Learning Objectives: 1. Compare and contrast various international terrorist groups and their respective ideologies. 2. Examine the ideological basis for terrorism. 3. Examine the concept of War and the Use of Force. 4. Examine the concept of Weapons of Mass Destruction, their use and threat to our nation and allies. 5. Examine the role of Intelligence in both Homeland Security and the War on Terror. 6. Compare and contrast the concepts of Globalization vs. Homeland Security 7. Enhance Critical Thinking.

Attendance Policy and Administrative Issues: Students are recognized as adult student learners. It is expected that students will attend all sessions and complete all course work. A SIGN-IN ROLL WILL BE PASSED THROUGH THE CLASS EACH SESSION AND WILL BE USED TO TRACK ATTENDENCE, SIGNING THE ROLL FOR ANOTHER STUDENT WILL BE

3 CONSIDERED AN INTEGRITY VIOLATION. It is expected that out of respect for others, students will (1) be on time for the class sessions, (2) TURN OFF cell phones during the class, (3) focus upon the material related to this course and (4) not bring guests or visitors to the course unless approved by the Professor. Rights and Responsibilities: This class is designed for collaborative learning. I will be our guide. I expect you to come to class ready to engage, enlighten and to participate. We have a lot to learn from each other. Here are some of the rules formulated by the University of Colorado Denver and me: 1. Always be respectful. 2. Attend class regularly as I will take attendance on a regular basis. We will have guest speakers during the course of the semester and your presence and participation is a vital part of effective interaction. 3. Be responsible for keeping copies of work you submit to me in case disaster strikes. Maintain a file of all the work I return corrected to you. 4. Class Assignments will be downgrades proportionate to the lateness of their submission. 5. Where relevant, all sources (ideas, quotations, and paraphrases) must be properly cited and referenced in APA 5 th Edition format. Refer to the University of Colorado Denver website on Academic Integrity for definitions and consequences of academic dishonesty. 6.
