2 The Urban Studies discipline at Heriot-Watt University offers two programmes. The Urban Planning and Property Development programme aims to prepare graduates for a professional career in real estate investment, development and/or management, or urban planning and design. It combines theory and practice drawn from town planning and real estate. The Geography, Society and Environment programme is designed to appeal to those with an interest in human geography, physical geography, social policy, economics and modern studies. It combines theory and practical work drawn from these main subject areas, to create an inherently interesting and broadly defined university degree. Programme Information BSc (Hons) Urban Planning and Property Development Until quite recently, planners and real estate professionals studied different degree programmes and interacted very little before entering graduate employment. Our Urban Planning and Property Development programme brings together theoretical, practical and policy content from both spheres town planning and real estate. Accreditation by both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) reflects the wide scope and relevance of this combined degree. MA (Hons) Geography, Society and Environment The Geography, Society and Environment programme is designed as a four-year, undergraduate Master of Arts (MA) Honours degree. Students also have the option to graduate after three years with a BA (Ordinary) degree. The programme draws equally from four separate discipline areas, of which three can be seen as belonging to social science and the fourth to physical science. The social science discipline areas that contribute to the degree are: human geography, economic geography and environmental planning. Meanwhile, physical geography subjects represent the fourth discipline area included in this degree. Teaching and Assessment Teaching and learning methods include directed reading, lectures, seminars, small group tutorials, group projects with written, graphic and oral work, and field trips, including one to Europe (Urban Planning and Property Development students only). Guest practitioners contribute to teaching. Assessment is by a combination of coursework projects, essays, reports, presentations and exams. Final year students produce a research dissertation. Study Abroad and Work Experience Study Abroad Field trips are organised to a range of European destinations. The School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society also has a number of exchange agreements with universities abroad. Work Experience We have strong links with local government and employers. External speakers offer an insight into potential careers, as do careers events tailored to urban studies students. Students in levels 2 and 3 often take up summer placements and internships, and we do our best to support and facilitate this. Providers of recent placements include a small renewable energy company as well as the City of Edinburgh Council. 3 Special Features Mentoring Every student has an academic mentor who provides support throughout the student s time at Heriot-Watt. All level 1 students also work with a tutor in small group tutorials. These regular meetings are designed to help students to adjust to university life, develop good study habits and catch any difficulties early on. In addition to academic mentoring, Urban Planning and Property Development level 3 students take part in a professional mentoring scheme that matches them with local practitioners. Students are encouraged to make the most of this scheme to discuss careers, job prospects, internships and professional membership with their mentor. Dual Accreditation The Urban Planning and Property Development degree is accredited by both RICS and RTPI. This is the only Scottish programme to have this joint accreditation. Graduate Profile Aline Kirkland Urban Studies Graduate Planner, Barton Willmore Heriot-Watt appealed to me because of the high rankings in the league tables for the town planning course and because of its location in Edinburgh, a city with a wide range of planning challenges. The University works hard to maintain industry links and this has been very useful to my career progression. I took up the option of a sandwich year and obtained valuable public sector experience at the City of Edinburgh Council, working in the town planning department. I was also able to take on the elected role of student member on the Scottish Young Planners Network steering group, which I was alerted to through the University. The lecturers at Heriot-Watt are one of the best features of the University. They are knowledgeable and keep up with the latest in their respective fields, providing me with a strong, relevant grounding in planning. Overall, I feel my degree has provided me with the analytical skills and the knowledge of the Scottish planning system that I need to be successful in my career. Graduates from our Urban Planning and Property Development programme go on to successful careers in the public and private sectors at national and international levels. Several of our most recent graduates are now employed by major investment institutions such as Scottish Widows and Standard Life while others have secured roles in planning and property consultancies like Jones Lang LaSalle and CBRE. Applicants to the Geography, Society and Environment programme are generally not yet looking to enter a specific profession or career path, but are seeking a broad, interesting and varied education in a contemporary, social science based subject. Our programme also offers an introduction to physical science subjects. This further enhances the theoretical depth and interest of the degree, and it expands the future opportunities for graduates when it comes to choosing from a range of possible career paths and options for further study at postgraduate level. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Heriot-Watt. Not only does it have a fantastic reputation from an academic point of view, but it s also a great place to be socially.
