Research at Inholland University of Applied Sciences Research at Inholland University of Applied Sciences is organised within research groups. Since 2002, we have been involved in the development, transfer and utilisation of knowledge through these research groups. The groups are headed by so called lectoren, professionals who have an established reputation within a specific field, most of whom hold a PhD. Many of these lectoren combine their work for us with activities elsewhere. This enables them to keep up-to-date with current professional practice in their respective fields. They are often joined in the research groups by experts from other organisations from outside the University of Applied Sciences. This exchange of expertise stimulates and facilitates innovation in the professional world, as well as in the educational programmes we offer here at Inholland. Thus, through conducting research, you learn more about the practicalities of the professional world, further developing your competencies as future professionals. The research groups act as a bridge for knowledge bringing up-to-date information into Inholland from outside, while also giving out information, usually the results of research, both on a national and international level. Research groups focus on research requests from small and medium sized enterprises, as well as from the public sector and larger businesses. They also seek co-operation with universities at home and abroad, alongside our own bachelor s and master s programmes. At present, more than twenty-five lectoren work here at Inholland University of Applied Sciences, spread over six different locations. about Inholland University of Applied Sciences studying in the Netherlands our campus facilities Selecting a university of applied sciences is not simply a case of finding a degree programme that suits your talents and career choice. Examples include: Stork Aerospace (Fokker) Military aviation Schiphol Airport Suppliers to Airbus and Boeing Engineering firms, research agencies and institutes concerned with innovation also welcome graduates of the Aeronautical Engineering programme with open arms. At research institutes you can: design structures and systems, such as landing gear perform aerodynamic research in wind tunnels, for example to analyse the flight behaviour of aircrafts with winglets conduct research into materials develop manufacturing methods control logistical processes Just think of the success of Glare, a material that was developed in the Netherlands. On modern aircrafts, it is used to construct wing and tailplane sections. You can also apply the knowledge you will acquire during the Aeronautical Engineering programme to projects for generating clean, sustainable energy. Just think of the aerodynamic and structural design of wind turbine blades. After spending a number of years working in engineering to build up experience, you can move on to positions such as: project manager quality engineer head of production or operations manager You can work in, for example, the engine industry or in aircraft maintenance. What job opportunities will I have? Examples of jobs that will be within your reach as an Aeronautical Engineering graduate are: design engineer structural engineer 28

materials and composites engineer modification and repair engineer systems engineer flight test engineer detail design engineer stress engineer weight engineer test engineer manufacturing engineer You will graduate from the Aeronautical Engineering programme as a Bachelor of Engineering. What are my career prospects? You will graduate from the Aeronautical Engineering programme as a Bachelor of Engineering. You will then be able to work anywhere in engineering. special projects classes practical assignments excursions The career prospects are excellent. For example, students are often offered a job before they even conclude their work placement. How is the programme structured? In the first year of study (propaedeutic phase), you will take a number of basic technical subjects. You will also be introduced to the field of aeronautical engineering through: Later in the programme, the emphasis will be placed more on gaining an in-depth knowledge of specialist aeronautical engineering subjects through lessons and projects. You will also learn to use various computer, drawing and test programs. Moreover, you will learn to work in a team. You will attend training sessions and write reports and dissertations. Finally, you will go on excursions and work field trips. And, of course, you will do work placements. This broad programme will turn you into a true professional. What subjects are covered in the programme? In the first year, you will be introduced to the following subjects: aircraft systems mechanics mathematics measurement and control engineering aerodynamics materials science production engineering communication skills (Dutch/English) 29

In addition to these subjects there will be various practical assignments and workshops, on themes such as: design/cad measurement engineering wind tunnels materials workshop practice And finally, you will work intensively on projects and large assignments. A few examples are: aircraft selection project elevator control project systems assignment Where can I go for help or advice? Every student is assigned a student career advisor from the first year onwards. In the first year, you will meet with your student career advisor every semester to discuss how you can study more effectively and how you are getting on in the programme. The assignments you will work on will also give you more insight into the professions that will be available to you later. In subsequent years, your student career advisor will help you decide on the further choices you must make within the programme, such as differentiation minors and work placements. Major/minor There are three components to the bachelor s degree programme in Aeronautical Engineering at Inholland University of Applied Sciences Delft: a major, a specialisation minor and a differentiation minor. The major is the core of the programme. It will account for half of your studies. This is where you will acquire your general professional knowledge and skills. You can choose a specialisation minor and differentiation minor according to your personal interests and ambitions. These will each form one quarter of the programme. What will I learn on the programme? The Aeronautical Engineering programme will enable you to acquire the following competencies and skills: drafting of a bill of requirements execution of a feasibility study formulation of technical specifications preparation of a conceptual design creation of a detailed design realisation of a product optimisation of a product management and maintenance of a product formulation of a project plan commercial thinking/behaviour and contact management 30

31

Outside this industry, you will be able to work as an engineer in research and development depart ments and con struc tion companies First year In your first year, you will work on the basic skills needed for Technical Engineering. This means that, in addition to a variety of projects, you will spend much of your time on mathematics and mechanics. You will also develop practical skills in various practical assignments. Second year The second year of the Aeronautical Engineering programme will start with a 10-week practical work placement. This is also called the key work placement. You will then return to your studies to focus on technical and aeronautical engineering subjects. Third year The third year of study will begin with a work placement during which you will perform activities at graduate level. This work placement lasts one hundred working days and presents the first opportunity for a stay abroad. The work placement is completed with a report and presentation. You will then enter the specialisation phase of your studies. You will enhance your theoretical knowledge, focusing primarily on aeronautical topics, such as: flight mechanics and propulsion maintenance and aircraft systems Final year This is the year in which you will complete the Aeronautical Engineering programme. In addition to the final theoretical component, you will dedicate a period of approximately five months to your graduation project. You will work on this project independently. The project tends to be an assignment by a company that culminates in a report which will serve as your thesis. You will prepare and execute a plan of action. You will present your results to the Aeronautical Engineering department and to the company of your work placement. Once you have successfully defended your thesis, you will be awarded the title of Bachelor of Engineering. Work placement A very important component of the Aeronautical Engineering programme is the work placement. You will do a total of three work placements. You will embark on your first placement, the shop-floor work placement, in the second year. You will spend ten weeks gaining practical experience at a company. This might involve welding, turning, and assembly work, for example. All this will give you an insight into the world outside your own programme, which will benefit you in your future career, when you collaborate with colleagues from different backgrounds. In the third year, you will do the vocational preparatory work placement. This period usually runs from the beginning of September until the end of January. You will spend at least 32

about Inholland University of Applied Sciences studying in the Netherlands our campus facilities programme choices twenty weeks at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. You will acquire new experiences and will perform one or more assignments. You can do the work placement at an engineering or testing department, for example at: Stork Fokker TNO Engineering can also cover technical support for aircraft maintenance, for example at: Nayak KLM Martinair Transavia More information at communication (international communication management) Amsterdam/Diemen, The Hague, Rotterdam, full-time The Communication degree programme (Advertising, Media & Reputation) will prepare you for your role as a communication specialist. You will be the person who knows exactly what the best way is to maintain contacts with large groups of people and organisations. You will ensure that internal and external communication with the target group runs smoothly and make sure that the communication budget is spent well. You will also commit yourself to building an advantageous image for your company. The programme is aimed at independent and active students who like to use their creative skills in the work they do and has been organised on the basis of the major/minor structure, which allows you to put together part of the 33
