Entry Australian Defence Force Academy The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) is designed to provide young Officer Cadets from all three Services (Navy, Army, Air Force) with the finest tertiary education in Australia. ADFA is a College of the University of New South Wales and officers graduate with a University of New South Wales degree. ADFA offers degrees in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Aeronautical), Science, Arts, Business and Technology. Engineering students will undertake a four-year degree. But academic pursuits are just a part of being a student at ADFA. There's also the military studies, fitness training, leadership and management skills you'll develop. It is the Academy's philosophy to provide cadets with every possible resource and opportunity to help them do their best, which in turn helps the Academy and its graduates live up to the maxim "To lead. To Excel". You are paid to study at ADFA and receive a textbook allowance, free medical and dental treatment, free uniforms and Higher Education Contribution Scheme payments are met by the ADF. In addition, you are guaranteed a job as an Officer in the Australian Army when you graduate. While you are studying, you will enjoy one of the best student/teacher ratios in the country and have access to state-of-the-art technology and facilities on campus dedicated to giving you the best academic and military qualifications possible. The first academic year essentially consists of the following components: 4 weeks Year One Familiarisation Training (YOFT); 1 week Chief of the Defence Force Parade; 16 weeks Session 1 academic studies (This period includes a 2 week recess of career development and field trips which can be either academic or military in nature); 2 weeks mid-year examinations, followed by two weeks Single Service Training (SST) at Royal Military College, Duntroon

It may also include Specialist Courses, visits to Military Units and opportunities for Service Attachments or Engineering Work Experience. As an Engineering Undergraduate, you will initially spend three years at the Academy completing academic and military requirements. On graduation you will attend RMC and complete 12 months military training. Towards the conclusion of your training at RMC, you will be allocated a Corps in the Regular Army. Individual Corps personnel requirements and the cadet's personal preference are considered when allocating a cadet to a particular Corps. Additionally cadets are in competition with their graduating peers for each position. You will graduate from RMC as a Lieutenant and return to the Defence Academy to complete your final year of Engineering. Graduate If you are already a degree qualified professional, and looking for a job that offers satisfaction, excitement and a challenge, and the opportunity to utilise and further develop your management and leadership skills, then you may wish to consider a career as an Officer (Graduate) in the Australian Regular Army. Find out more in our Recruitment Centre or ask your local Defence Force Recruiting Centre. Security Requirement The Department of Defence requires ADF entrants to obtain a security clearance appropriate to their avenue of entry. A process of background checks, collection of relevant information and, as required, interviews enables the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency to make an informed assessment of an applicant's suitability for a security clearance. The security clearance level required for this role is Negative Vetting Level 2 and current policy requires applicants for this particular avenue of entry to have lived in Australia for the preceding 10 years, or have a checkable background for this period. Some jobs may also require you to complete additional testing at a later date. Psychology support staff will explain what is involved with each test. The aptitude tests provide information about your suitability for the Defence Force and for particular jobs. Defence Force Recruiting can then help you identify jobs that best match your abilities. Further information on the aptitude testing requirements can be found here. Education & Experience

9 Graduates are commissioned as Lieutenants. During RMC (Military Training) and (Initial) Employment Training (Regimental or Logistics Officers Basic Course etc), you will be required to pay a contribution towards your meals, accommodation and utilities. Further information is also available at the Royal Military College website. Specialist Service Officer First Appointment Course During your first posting you will be required to complete the Specialist Service Officer Course at the Royal Military College, Duntroon. The SSO Course aims to prepare Specialist Service Officers to perform their specialist role within the Army Reserve. This course serves as an introduction to the Army providing a fundamental knowledge of leadership, command and control, unit and personnel administration, basic military skills and the ideals of officer behaviour and attitudes necessary for future employment. The ARES course is currently conducted in the latter half of the year and consists of two modules. Module One is 26 days and Module Two is 16 days. ARES personnel may undertake the two modules separately; however, trainees will not be deemed competent for employment as an SSO until completion of both modules. The SSO FAC is conducted at RMC and the Majura Training Area. During the ARES course, trainees will be required to work every day of each module; however, there is one scheduled day off in Module One. Physical Fitness Levels All trainees attending training at RMC are required to participate in an Initial Fitness Assessment (IFA) on arrival at RMC. Ares SSOs must complete the IFA for both modules. This is an entry level requirement for all courses conducted at RMC. The IFA is based on a shuttle run, push ups and sit ups and is designed to determine whether trainees are at the minimum required standard to complete training at RMC. Due to the unique nature of training at RMC, trainees who do not demonstrate the base line levels of the assessment may be withdrawn from training and RTU. If you do not pass the IFA, you will be medically reviewed by the RMC Medical Officer and you will be advised if you are able to continue with training. For further details on physical fitness standards refer to Physical Fitness Standards for Entry into the ADF.
