1 Safe Surf: A Workshop on Internet Safety A Program of the Needham Youth Commission in collaboration with the Needham Public Schools Sponsored by the Needham Education Foundation, Inc. 929 Pollard Students completed a survey regarding their Internet use. The following is a compilation of the results. They said some inappropriate topics (especially boy-girl dating stuff) A rumor that was started that was kind of gross I kept talking about how much I hated someone and how much they annoyed me (I was swearing too) I broke up with someone online He was cursing at a person and saying he ll kill u and your mom That gay marriage is ok and that I support it Something nice to a girl that I wouldn t say to her in person because I m too afraid to talk to her in person My friend said something inappropriate to a boy online that she wouldn t say in person That s personal They said that they were someone else, and when I figured out who it was, they told me that if I told anyone what happened they would spread rumors about me Things about what they have done sexually with boys and girls Asked someone out, which they would not do in person A friend of mine said to someone else on a different screen name that they were a fag and that they were going to hack their computer Some people have talked about some sexual stuff My friends put derogatory things in their profiles that they would never say in person They said I was suicidal They said sexual comments Sometimes apologizing is easier online than in person They pretended to be someone else We called them stupid bitches and we cussed them out My friend was asking a girl what underwear she was wearing They told someone that they would come to their house and kill them I don t want to say People say bad insults because there is no fear like in real confrontations You suck, go die You re such a dumb blonde things I wouldn t have been brave enough to say in person to a mean girl NO 51% 55% 53% 42%
4 What is something that you know goes on (regarding the Internet) that your parents probably have no idea about? Kids can visit bad sites, then erase their history That I talk to people in chat rooms That kids make a lot of websites that have their names and stuff like that People spread lots of rumors online Some game sites that I go on have some dirty stuff and I don t tell them about it What I have in my buddy profile and what my icon says I have signed up for free stuff The websites that kids go to. Most teenagers go to websites that are inappropriate People get boyfriends and girlfriends on IM How people fake their names, addresses, and phone numbers POS-parents over shoulder Some of the websites I visit People gossip about people and they don t always say the nicest things My friends sometimes go to sites with swears I play online games Nothing The conversations I have There are some games online that I don t show my parents because it would be a lot of violence They probably don t know that people my age make websites about themselves that have photos, contact info, etc That people talk sexual about themselves on the Internet A lot of kids I know post web pages with much too personal info on the pages How many fights people get in. Nothing Not really. Well web cam photos Who I talk to and what I talk about There is a lot of black mailing, and there are bad chat rooms People threatening friends I think my parents know everything People meeting after talking That people have their own web sites Sometimes people spread mean jokes about someone that is not appropriate That I download games Kids being mean to each other People go to inappropriate sites People log on as other people on IM The things that go on in chat rooms or the pictures and websites people have Some violent games I play online Hooking up, sex talk, etc Ratemyteachers.com Identity theft People sending all these sex sites when you go in a chat room That people threaten each other online Histories are deletable People sending hw answers Personally, I don t/have never done this but boys go on porn sites all the time The bullying and rumors going on in the Internet and Friends can turn into enemies through copy and pasting Downloading videogames Gay/lesbian chats Sharing of pictures That my friends and I fight and say bad things to each other I know that people buy and sell drugs parents have no idea My alternate screen names and chat rooms with people I don t know I sign up at websites so I can play the games There is a lot of harassing on different screen names Porn sites are available to younger people Who s on my buddy list, who I talk to I know that people can receive threats from screen names they don t know. My parents are pretty clued in
