1 GEARSEF 2014 Results SPECIAL AWARD RECOGNITIONS American Psychological Association Award (certificate) This award recognizes the top project in both Jr and Sr Divisions combined in the category of Behavior & Social Sciences. The winner is: Ansley Lynn Glenwood School Auburn University Biological Sciences Award for Creative Application of Biological Principles, sponsored by the AU Biological Sciences Dept. This award recognizes a Senior Division project with a plaque and $100 cash. Broadcom MASTERS Award (certificate) The recipients of the Broadcom MASTERS award represent the top 10% of Junior Division projects at GEARSEF. Winners will receive a certificate and a letter of invitation to complete an online application for the Broadcom MASTERS competition. The winners are: 1. Alexis Jones Auburn Junior High School 2. Taylor Rosenthal Opelika Middle School 3. Lucas Lynn Wetumpka Middle School 4. Ishan Patel Opelika Middle School Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award (certificate and $200) This award goes to the overall best computer science related project in the Senior Division. The winner will receive a certificate and $200. The winner is: Taylor Hopper Wetumpka High School Mu Alpha Theta Award (certificate) This award is presented to one Senior Division project that best demonstrates challenging, original, thorough, and creative investigation of a problem using mathematics. Ricoh Sustainable Development Award (certificate) This award recognizes the project that best reflects the principles of sustainability -- balancing economic development with environmental responsibility. Both Jr. and Sr. level projects are eligible for this award. The winner is: Megan Lange Auburn High School 1
2 Auburn University Society of Women in Sciences and Mathematics Achievement Award This award recognizes high achievement in scientific research by a female. We will recognize one junior division project and one senior division project The junior division winner is: Alexis Jones Auburn Junior High School The senior division winner is: Orianna Gordon & Destiny Marshall Central High School Stockholm Junior Water Prize (certificate and chance to enter on-line competition) The Stockholm Water Foundation recognizes up to three Senior level projects that best address water related issues. The winner(s) of this award are invited to enter a statewide on-line competition hosted by the Stockholm Water Foundation. The winners are: 1. Mason Corbett Lakeview Christian School 2. McKenna Tharpe Stanhope Elmore High School Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award, sponsored by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) This award recognizes the Jr or Sr Division project that best emphasizes NOAA s Stewardship Mission, To understand and predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts, and share that knowledge and information with others, and to conserve and manage coastal and marine ecosystems and resources. The winner is: Megan Lange Auburn High School United States Air Force (2 senior level projects) The US Air Force recognizes two Senior Division projects with a certificate of achievement and a gift package The winners are: Ruchir Rastogi LAMP High School Ansley Lynn Glenwood School United States Navy (2 senior level projects and 2 junior level projects) The US Navy recognizes 2 Senior division projects and 2 junior division projects that exemplify excellence in science and engineering research. ALABAMA STATE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR: GEARSEF is one of 5 regional Intel Science and Engineering Fairs in the State of Alabama. The top projects in both Jr. and Sr. level divisions are invited to compete at the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Alabama Huntsville on April 3-5. Only those projects that earned a high enough score according to the GEARSEF judging panel will be invited to the state competition.
