1 Chapter 2: Accessing System Software OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this chapter, you will be able to: Know how to shut down VITEK 2 Compact (V2C) workstation in the event of a power failure Log in to gain access to both Window s operating system and V2C software Describe different user access levels Identify icons on the Windows screen Understand security and login passwords Know what the six primary icons represent on the Main View screen Describe the purpose of the icons located in the status bar Understand the procedure to log off V2C software Explain general configuration Configure results validation PRINTING & VIEWING INSTRUCTIONS Print (preferably in color) and read the objectives and questions for each chapter prior to viewing the associated video. Questions may be answered as you view the video. Please bring your completed online workbook to the VITEK 2 Compact instructor led training class in Durham, North Carolina. For specific instructions on video viewing, please refer to the Getting Started link. GUIDED VIEWING QUESTIONS Read the statements below and put each action in sequential order, number one being the first step and three being the last step. 1. In the event of a power failure, if the power is not restored or emergency power is not activated within 10 minutes you must Shut down the computer until power is restored Log out of the V2C software Save any data currently active in V2C software Chapter 2, Page 1 of 8

2 Determine whether the statement is correct or incorrect by circling either or. 2. In the event of power failure, the battery powered UPS will keep the workstation and instrument running indefinitely. 3. Each user is assigned a unique user ID to ensure a proper audit trail. 4. The Bi-directional Computer Interface (BCI) software connects the V2C workstation and the OBSERVA data management workstation. 5. The icons below are found on the Windows screen after log in. 6. Upon clicking the Lock icon, a user gains access to Results Release Steps. The Results Release steps consist of five configuration options that allow a user to choose the level of review and approval preferred for the lab workflow. Chapter 2, Page 2 of 8

3 Read the statements below and circle the correct letter for each answer. Earlier you learned that the VITEK 2 Compact is based on a Windows XP operating system and in order to access the V2C software you must first log into Windows XP. 7. In order to log in to Windows XP you must enter a _. Review Critical Isolates Current users of the V2C system are assigned three varying levels of access to the operating system and the V2C software functions. 12. Read each access description to determine which user level is described. Place the associated letter in the blank provided. One letter will be used more than once. A. Lab Administrator B. 5 The V2C workstation Main Menu has six primary function icons Place the number that corresponds to the function of each icon in the space provided. _ Quality Control _ Configuration _ View & Maintain Isolate Results Manage Cassettes Manage Patient Information Utilities 14. Place a Check ( ) in the box containing the icon that allows a user to access a list of configuration options. Chapter 2, Page 5 of 8

6 15. Place a Check ( ) in the box containing the icon that allows a user to save changes made in the configuration step. Once a user logs in to the V2C software, a status bar remains across the bottom of the screen with icons that allows for communication regarding the status of the system. 16. Match the icon with the function by drawing a line from the icon to the appropriate function. User selects this button to determine instrument status; this icon indicates there are no errors or issues with the instrument or software Allows user to log off or quit the V2C software application User selects this button to see a description of the error that has occurred in the instrument or software Indicates connection with external data management system is working properly Chapter 2, Page 6 of 8

7 17. Match each Result Release Step with the correct statement by placing the corresponding letter in the appropriate blank. 8 In addition to configuring how results from the VITEK 2 Compact instrument are validated, a user must also perform general configuration. General configuration allows for establishment of several settings such as facility name entry, bench and patient demographics selection, times for auto logoff and isolate activity, etc. Determine whether each statement is correct or incorrect by circling either or. 18. The V2C instrument number cannot be changed. 19. A user can enter up to 20 characters for facility name. 20. When the system automatically logs a user off due to inactivity, all unsaved data is lost. 21. It is recommended that Patient Demographics be maintained in the OBSERVA data management system. 22. The Automatic Backup feature is used to backup system data weekly. 23. The number of login attempts allowed before a user is locked-out may be changed from a default of three to between two and eight. 24. The 21CFR11 function is used primarily for Industry and Pharmaceutical labs. Chapter 2, Page 8 of 8
