4 SSR 2 Standing Seam Roof and Cladding Product Guide Materials and Finishes MATERIALS AND FINISHES Creating a unique and imaginative finish to any residential project is easily achieved with SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding. APPLICATIONS AND INSTALLATION Selecting the right SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding system is simple and available to suit a range of project requirements. Material properties SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding panels are comprised of an outer skin profiled from 0.7mm Galvalloy treated steel sheets, grade S220GD to BS EN 10346:2009. The sheets are treated with a 200 μ plastisol coating on the exposed face and a 10 μ polyester coating on the reverse face. The lightweight steel is approximately 7 x lighter than conventional roof tiles, its ease of use allows safe and efficient handling on site and greatly reduces build times, with an average SSR 2 roof taking approx 10 hours to install. Coating properties Extensive research with leading paint companies has lead to the development of the most advanced and unique pre-treatment primer and topcoat formulation for SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding, designed to ensure maximum durability during a buildings lifetime. A robust thick coating provides colour longevity and its flexible adhesion helps to avoid damage during fabrication and installation. Developed with a unique metallic coated substrate afforded by Tata Steel Colorcoat the unique coating formulation uses special pigments to provide advanced UV resistance and ensure the product retains its prominent colour, all contributing to the lasting durability of the product. Impact resistance SSR 2 standing seam panels used in both roof and cladding application, will have adequate resistance against hard and soft body impact in combination with the standard wood board build up. Panels have been engineered for impact resistance in accordance with MOAT 43: UEAtc Directives for impact testing opaque vertical building components, and Part 2.2.1: Impact from large soft bodies and MOAT 43: UEAtc Directives for impact testing opaque vertical building components. Part 2.2.2: Hard body impacts. Condensation risk All roof systems are prone to the risk of condensation; this can arise as either interstitial condensation within the roof construction or surface condensation at areas of thermal bridges. Simple measures can be taken to prevent condensation forming between the panels and underlying substrate, thus minimising the risk of water vapour reaching the OSB board: Vapour control layer in the roof construction providing an adequate seal around the ceiling Breather membrane in the roof construction to allow the air to circulate freely Adequate insulation level meeting current U-values Lightning risk The Catnic SSR 2 standing seam roof is no more likely to be struck by lightning than any other roofing material; it is the building shape and position relative to other buildings that has most influence over a lightning strike. Metal roofs are generally safer than other roofs in a lightning storm. There is no specific requirement for the Catnic SSR 2 standing seam roof to have a lightning conductor but as with most buildings any risk of lightning striking the building should be covered during the design of the building by a suitably qualified person. The risk assessment would normally be carried out in line BS EN 605. *Terms and conditions apply Standard residential roofs For the more conventional structure and housing design, SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding offers the traditionally formed or standing seam profile, an ideal choice for low rise and residential roofs. The installation is finished with compact, precise detailing, scaled to suit the buildings size. Each profile can be applied over a substructure of a fully boarded out truss, SIPs and fully Simple locking design boarded out metal frame construction. Ideally suited to buildings with a maximum of 4 storeys. Refurbishment and renovation of existing roofs SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding can be sympathetically fixed during refurbishment and applied easily to clad over existing roofing. The simplistic nature of its design and installation make it the ideal choice for anyone looking for a lightweight, strong and modern solution. Ordering made easy Ordering the correct solution is simple with Catnic Technical Service Support. SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding system is fully scheduled by our team of engineers. 5 SSR 2 Standing Seam Roof and Cladding Product Guide Applications and Installation APPLICATIONS AND INSTALLATION APPLICATIONS AND INSTALLATION Load Span Tables All load span information is based on the boarded structure on standard 600mm or 400mm centres, and a structural engineer should be consulted prior to the specification and build to verify these calculations. Uplift wind deflection values (KN/m²) Working from the right-hand end of the roof (as viewed from ground level), the first panel is installed with the upturned rib in line with the wall edge and its nail strip on the left (see Figure 2). Figure 2. Wind speed and fixing guidance. UK Wind Chart 29 Roof 10mm deflection 20mm deflection mm mm Maintenance For complete peace of mind SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding has been designed to require little or no maintenance. The long-standing performance of Tata Steel Colorcoat pre-finished steel has been recognised by the BBA who state that the coating and metal treatment will protect for a period in excess of 40 years in normal urban, suburban and rural environments. Installation training Full training for all installers is available free of charge, and recommended for anyone using this product for the first time. Installation guidance Comprehensive installation and specification guides are available from Catnic on request. For those unfamiliar with metal roofing systems we have outlined the basic procedures and processes. Before you begin ensure roof dimensions are checked against the drawings for accuracy and squareness, together with the ridge, eaves and verge dimensions. The eaves, verge and ridge backing plates (monopitch) should be in place before installing the panels (see Figure 1). Figure 1. CU (3.3 x 40mm Ringshank Nail) OSB 3/WBP Breather membrane The next panel is clipped onto the first and secured to the roof at the predetermined fixing centres, ensuring its rib is parallel with that of the first. Subsequent panels are similarly fitted. To allow for thermal movement, the fixings should be of the correct size, located centrally in the nail strip holes with adequate clearance, and should not bear too tightly against the plate. Once the penultimate panel has been installed, the left hand end panel can be fitted to suit the roof edge, and the verge detail completed. To minimise thermal expansion in hot, sunny weather, the panels should be protected from direct sunlight until ready for use. Conversely, when installing in cold weather, the panels may be stretched against the previously installed panel rib before fixing down. When installing in hot weather, adequate clearance should be provided between the folded panel edge. This will allow for contraction due to subsequent decrease in ambient temperature. 25 Sligo Galway Limerick Cork Dublin Belfast Inverness Aberdeen Dundee Edinburgh Llandrindod Wells 22 Newcastle Carlisle Bala York Birmingham Swansea Bristol Cardiff 21 Exeter Sheffield Poole Leicester Luton Norwich London 22 Brighton The installation of SSR 2 standing seam roof 514mm and 305mm panels when installed at a pitch between are dependant* on: Location Storey height Wall height Roof pitch mm> Wall Guidance notes 200mm> <180mm 180mm When building over 3 storey's or in exposed locations the structural engineer should complete a wind uplift calculation and provide Catnic with details so the best fixing solutions can be designed. 6 SSR 2 Standing Seam Roof and Cladding Product Guide Acoustic Performance ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE Catnic s SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding has been designed to meet all the requirements of external surfaces and walls as set out in Approved Document B1. The built up nature of SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding allows greater flexibility to deliver acoustic solutions for residential and commercial. Acoustic considerations A number of factors need to be addressed when identifying the acoustic requirements of a building (See figure 1). 1. Airborne transmission Airborne noise is typically generated from external sources and increasingly prevalent to residential buildings in close proximity to heavy traffic, industrial units, and schools (See figure 2). 2. Impact transmission Impact noise from rain and in particular driving rain needs to be considered on both roof and cladding elements of the buildings design. 3. Internal noise reverberation As sound waves are reflected and absorbed sound clarity and overall noise levels will be directly affected within the building. 4. Flanking transmission A more complex transmission of sound, where sound vibrations transmitted from one source are transmitted to other rooms in the building from elements of the building structure (See figure 3). Modifying building acoustics can be easily addressed in multiple ways: Reflected back into the building Absorbed within the structure Transmitted through the structure The structure of a building s walls and roof can be engineered to modify the level of sound energy according to the clients acoustic requirements. Where special considerations are Figure 1. Acoustic performance considerations in buildings Noise source Reflection (reverberation) 1a essential, architects / specifiers will address the needs to control the internal acoustics or reverberation of a building with input from an acoustic engineer. 3 1b Key 1a / 1b: Airborne sound transmission 2: Rain impact noise transmission 3: Reflection / reverberation 4: Flanking Figure 2. Acoustic performance factors Key Noise source 3 Well Absorption Direct transmission Flanking transmission 2 Transmission Figure 3. Direct and flanking transmission between areas 4 4 Increasing acoustic performance Incorporating a high density of insulation within the roof or cladding build up, together with a dense board layer such as plasterboard or cement particle boards will greatly improve acoustic performance by adding a layer of mass to the construction. This can also aid the reduction coupling between the internal and external surfaces. Increasing the thickness and/or density of the board layer will increase the sound absorption and reduce the overall level of sound transmission. The additional mass of the dense board layer will also reduce the rain impact noise transmitted through the structure (See figure 5). A single skin construction has relatively low mass and the internal surface is directly coupled with the external surface. Therefore airborne transmission will incur very little energy absorption and the majority of sound reduction will be due to internal reflection. Consideration also needs to be given to elements within the roof or cladding structure such as glazing, which may reduce performance. Figure 5. Specifiers should refer to their building control officer or architect to provide detailed advice and performance figures for a given specification
7 SSR 2 Standing Seam Roof and Cladding Product Guide Fire Performance FIRE PERFORMANCE The performance of the building envelope in a potential fire is a fundamental requirement during any build type, and it is essential that all elements and precaution be taken from the initial design. SAFE STORAGE AND HANDLING All products should be used in accordance with their specific instructions to prevent failure. Please ensure all items ordered are delivered before commencing installation work. Cladding performance requirements Figure 6. Cladding performance requirements 1 high D Any building Less than 1m Key No provision in respect of the boundaries indicated. Class 0 (National Class) or Class B-s3, d2 or better (European Class). Roof performance requirements E Any building Above 18m high Up to 18m high Up to 10m high Approved Document B1 outlines that the performance requirements for external roof coverings should be considered in accordance to location and in relation to the distance of the building from a relevant boundary. Figure 7 sets out the minimum requirements stated in EN and BS There are no restrictions on the use of roof coverings that are designated AA, AB or AC, National Class, or B ROOF (t4), European Class. Roof products that meet the requirements stipulated in Commission Decision 2000/533/EC can be considered to satisfy the requirements without the need for testing. Catnic SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding meets the requirements for all external roof and wall coverings in accordance with approved Document B1. Index (I) not more than 20 (National Class) or Class C-s3, d2 or better (European Class). Performance requirements for roof coverings D roof (t4) CA, CB, CC B Any building other than C Storage Store panels in close proximity to the building where they are to be installed. All products should be stored in a clean and dry environment on a firm even surface, clear of the ground on timber bearers spaced no more than 900mm apart. If indoor storage is not available cover all sheets with a waterproof covering, which should be supported on a scaffolding frame, leaving sufficient room on all sides for air to circulate. Incline the stacks so that any rain water that penetrates the covering will drain off. If stacked or bundle products do become wet, then separate and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Inspect the sheets at regular intervals to check for any leaks in the covering. Handling Gloves should be worn to avoid injury from any sharp edges. When being moved by hand, the panels should be turned and carried on their edge using appropriate personal protective equipment, and where possible, the panels should be lifted manually onto the roof in single sheets. The product should be handled in accordance with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended version). The panels should be lifted from the stack rather than dragged across it. Sheets should be handled carefully to avoid any damage, and where possible only lift single sheets manually onto the roof. If sheets have to be hoisted into position ensure edges are protected and that pressure across the sheet does not distort it. Use only ropes and slings for hoisting, never chains. Do not drag material over rough surfaces or fixed sheets. Bulk sheets should be moved or lifted with a fork-lift truck with appropriate length forks. Long sheets should be moved using a lifting beam with suitable slings and spreaders. Remove all packaging and wrapping with care and discard safely and responsibly. When working on the roof, soft-soled shoes must be worn. The soles should be checked for any sharp objects that could damage the panel or cause injury. Application Do not use damaged goods. Alignment and tolerance of the building structure should be carried out prior to installation to ensure it is within the specification given. If not the panels may not fit. Do not drag tools over sheets, and protect from swarf. Cutting All panel and fabrication cutting must be completed away from the roof to eliminate the risk of transferring swarf onto the panel. All exposed edges should be burred and protected with touch-up paint. For cut-outs, openings and cuts that are not straight use a Jigsaw or reciprocating saw. We recommend a circular saw producing a cold cut using a fine tooth metal blade for long straight cuts. Delivery The profiled panels are normally delivered to site in pre-specified lengths according to the dimensions of the roof on which they are to be installed and are palleted in packs of 6 or 4 depending on length and weight. Delivery is normally by lorry and unloading carried out by crane or moffet. The site must have adequate access and a suitable surface for this traffic. During transport, the panels must be suitably restrained to prevent abrasion and their edges and corners protected against damage. Disposal When disposing of any Catnic products or packaging, due consideration must be given to the environmental impact of the method of disposal. 8 SSR 2 Standing Seam Roof and Cladding Product Guide Sustainability SUSTAINABILITY ENVIRONMENT We consider care for the environment to be essential both in terms of our duty to society and to ensure the continuity of our business. In 2010 Catnic achieved the Environmental Management Standard ISO in recognition of its environmental management policy. Our products are durable, adaptable, reusable and recyclable. SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding has been developed using eco-design principles, aimed at minimising the environmental impact of the product from raw material production all the way through to re-use or recycling. Eco-design At Catnic we always ensure our products meet or exceed the performance regulations of current legislation. SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding has been developed using raw materials with a lower environmental impact than required by legislation. Heavy metals and unnecessary fire retardants have been eliminated from the topcoat, and high performing alternatives to undesirable organotin stabilisers and phthalate plasticizers have been introduced. The steel used in SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding is 100% recyclable with zero degraduation in the materials properties when recycled unlike nearly all of other construction materials. It also contains more than 25% recycled steel content. ISO EMS All manufacturing processes are carefully controlled to the highest environmental standards and are ISO certified. Catnic SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding has been certified to BES 6001 so you can rest assured that you are specifying/using a sustainable product and can maximise the potential for obtaining credits under the Responsible Sourcing of Materials sections of BREEAM, the Code for Sustainable Homes and CEEQUAL. Certification of all our steel construction products to BES 6001 provides independent verification of our corporate responsibility, including the way we drive sustainability considerations up the supply chain to the point of raw material extraction. It delivers a method for us to benchmark and show that we are continuously improving our sustainability credentials. All paint solvents are recycled through an incineration system to provide heat for the ovens and reduce the amount of natural gas used in the advanced curing process. Tata Steel are also the first steel business to secure BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing certification and this has been obtained for all Colorcoat pre-finished steel products. Cradle to cradle Tata Steel has carefully measured the impacts of a Colorcoat pre-finished steel cladding system throughout its life from cradle to cradle. This information is used by Catnic to identify its carbon footprint and assess any other major impacts of the cladding system. This demonstrates a carbon footprint that is more than 3x lower than some of the leading ecodesigned urban roofing products currently available on the market. BRE Green Guide - A+ Rated Our steel systems are rated A+ within the BRE green guide. Future proofed Intended to assist the designer in meeting even the most stringent of future legislation requirements, SSR 2 standing seam roof and cladding allows for the simple integration of photovoltaic, solar thermal and/or passive solar heat collection roofs. Compatible with rainwater harvesting systems Suitable for rainwater collection, this inspires confidence to broaden the number of uses for collected water, helping towards delivery of the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 target for portable water consumption of 80l/p/d. Through our research and development activities, we are continuing to develop products that give additional social and environmental benefits to our customers and society as a whole. However, Catnic recognise that in our day to day operations we impact upon the environment in a number of ways. Therefore we are committed to achieving continual improvement in our environmental performance and pollution prevention and in supporting government policy for sustainable development. In particular we will: Integrate environmental management into all our business activities. Ensure compliance with all relevant local, national and international legislation and regulations.
