2 Sustainable transformation Foreword In 2012 we again managed to substantially reduce our own CO 2 footprint. Our behaviour in the area of sustainability was further improved by optimisation within our buildings, travelling more conscientiously and using fewer raw materials. In 2012 this resulted in a CO 2 reduction of nearly 8% compared to 2011! And if we also count our air travel kilometres compensation, the reduction was as high as 16%! This, of course, is a very nice result, but for an engineering firm of greater importance is what we managed to achieve for our clients. Deerns has been showing this performance for some years now by means of the Deerns Multiplier, succinctly explained as the extent of CO 2 reduction as a result of our recommendations in projects in respect of our own emissions. And this year that factor is again many hundreds of times higher than what we ourselves emit through our business operations. 1 The CO 2 Performance Ladder is a procurement tool to encourage companies to be aware of their CO 2 emissions and those of their suppliers. The CO 2 Performance Ladder was originally developed by ProRail, the Operator of the Dutch railway infrastructure. This driving force was not expressed until recently in the sustainability certification methods. In the new version of the CO 2 Performance Ladder 1 it will be possible to have our performance for our clients count as part of our sustainability score by means of the Sector-oriented Explanation for Engineering Agencies. This leads to a more meaningful evaluation. In the end it is still our energy concepts for our clients that make the big difference and not the effect we can exert on the sustainability policy of our suppliers. Nevertheless, we will always take a critical look at the corporate social responsibility aspect at parties to which we give assignments ourselves, at both existing and new suppliers. You can read how in this edition (page 11), because even if the effect is small, the sum of the total is what counts. Marcel Schellekens Director

3 About Deerns Profile Deerns is the largest independent consultancy firm in the Netherlands in the field of installation engineering, energy and building physics. With branch offices in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Dubai and the United States, Deerns is a leading and international player on the international stage. Deerns head office is located in Rijswijk, the Netherlands. Deerns develops and designs technical facilities in and around the built environment. More than anybody else, Deerns is able to develop innovative concepts and to realise them in a practical and reliable manner. Consequently, Deerns contributes to a safe, sustainable and comfortable living environment. Our measures Our offices In the office category, the emphasis lies on energy-saving measures within our buildings and the use of as much sustainable energy as possible. Moreover, we limit the use of raw materials where possible, in our case mostly paper. The paper we use is sustainably produced. Our travel kilometres The great majority of our CO 2 footprint is defined by our travel kilometres. The measures we have taken in this area are aimed chiefly at limiting the number of kilometres to be travelled and at the reduction of CO 2 per kilometre by promoting the use of public transport and energyefficient company cars. In addition, we provide compensation via the Climate Neutral Group for the total CO 2 emissions caused by air travel kilometres for business purposes. Our work Since 1928 we have developed sustainable solutions for numerous clients. Our energy concepts remain by far the biggest driving force in the goal of realising a substantial reduction in CO 2 emissions. This is why we set the objective for ourselves that at least 20% of the relevant projects we handle within one year must be of such sustainability that they qualify for official certification. Deerns Eindhoven - the Klokgebouw Deerns in Eindhoven: sustainable three times over Linking technical ingenuity with practical solutions for man and the environment is also right up Deerns alley in Eindhoven. From the impressive Strijp-S district, Deerns encourages sustainability amongst clients. Sustainable social initiatives are also sponsored at the local level. We take after this region, points out Office Director Johan van Gerven. A high degree of high tech, focus on the future and socially involved. Deerns operates in Eindhoven from the Klokgebouw part of the most sustainable inner city redevelopment project in the Netherlands. We moved into an empty shell that we then fitted out with the newest sustainable technologies. What s more, there are 156 solar panels on the roof to provide for our energy requirements and the lowest roof is covered with moss to pick up fine particles. So we re located in a sustainable area, in a sustainable office building that we have renovated ourselves. Sustainable three times over. Goal: in % fewer CO 2 emissions compared with 2009

6 Sustainable transformation Deerns CO 2 footprint This footprint arose based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). This standard for CO 2 measurements and management assumes 3 categories: Scope 1: all direct emissions of greenhouse gases. Scope 2: indirect emissions of greenhouse gases through the consumption of purchased electricity, heat or steam. Scope 3: other indirect emissions, such as the extraction and production of purchased materials and fuels; activities related to transport per vehicle that are not the property of or managed by the reporting entity; and activities related to electricity not covered by Scope 2. Deerns distribution of CO 2 emissions CO 2 emissions (tonne) Scope 1 Company car Gas consumption Air conditioning Scope 2 Electricity Plane Business kilometres for private cars Scope 3 Public transport Paper Water consumption Commuter traffic Total CO Total CO 2 per FTE Total CO 2 after compensation of business air travel kilometres Company car Gas consumption Air conditioning Electricity Plane Business kilometres for private cars Public transport Paper Water consumption Commuter traffic The above figures have been compiled in accordance with the standards of the CO 2 Performance Ladder. The CO 2 Performance Ladder is a procurement tool to encourage companies to be aware of their CO 2 emissions and those of their suppliers. The CO 2 Performance Ladder was originally developed by ProRail, the Operator of the Dutch railway infrastructure.

7 Deerns Multiplier We realise the greatest effect in the reduction of CO 2 with sustainable energy concepts in our projects. To express this, we created the Deerns Multiplier. This factor reflects the extent to which we manage to save on CO 2 in our top 10 projects for our clients, plotted against the legal performance requirements, in relation to our own footprint. In 2012 the CO 2 savings on the entire technical lifespan amounted to 726 times our own annual production of CO 2 emissions. By comparison: in 2011 this factor was 575. CO 2 -savings in our projects: 726x Deerns annual emissions Deerns: through our business operations, our emissions in 2012 were more than 1,200 tonnes of CO 2, 16% less than in Multiplier Development The realised savings in our projects of 982,000 tonnes of CO 2 corresponds with the emission of 1,450 single flights between Amsterdam and Sydney

8 Sustainable transformation Our goals CO 2 reduction is one of Deerns goals and it is part of our ambition to operate our business as socially responsible as possible. Deerns also supports other initiatives when it comes to the realisation of these social goals. Below are some random examples of roughly 20 initiatives we support. Dutch Design Week With the support of the Eindhoven design community, Dutch Design Week strives to create a stimulating and dynamic design climate in the cultural, social and economic field in the region of Eindhoven. In 2012 Deerns supported DDW by once again opening its doors to the public. Prinses Christina Concours The Prinses Christina Concours aims to promote classical music and jazz amongst the youth. Deerns is one of the patrons of this competition. Stichting Living Daylights The Stichting Living Daylights promotes a proper application of daylight in the built environment. Deerns is the main sponsor of this foundation. YES!Delft YES!Delft is the entrepreneurial centre that promotes technical entrepreneurship and supports it in all its phases. YES!Delft inspires students, professionals and scientists to become entrepreneurs and offers practical support in the incorporation and development of new businesses. Deerns is a sponsor of YES!Delft.

9 CPC Run The ABN AMRO CPC Loop The Hague is a running tradition of international allure. This annual event is intended for both elite and amateur athletes. The event attracted more than 30,000 participants. In 2012 Deerns sponsored five staff members who ran this 21-km half marathon. Study societies Deerns supports dozens of technical study societies, including the following: Elektrotechnische Vereeniging, Delft Intermate, Eindhoven J.D. van der Waals, Eindhoven Mollier, Eindhoven Simon Stevin, Eindhoven VSV Leonardo da Vinci, Delft Final project supervision and trainee posts Each year Deerns makes between 15 and 20 trainee posts available to students at institutes of technology and universities. In addition, Deerns also supervises 10 to 15 university students on the path to graduation. Helen Dowling Institute For the new premises of the Helen Dowling Institute (HDI), Deerns designed the installation technology and supervised the implementation thereof at cost. HDI provides psycho-social assistance to cancer patients and their close relatives.

10 Sustainable transformation Symposium: Increasing the value of sustainable real estate Sharing knowledge with the market in order to make progress in social areas goes without saying for Deerns. On 5 September 2012 Deerns organised at the Soestdijk Palace the symposium entitled Determination of sustainable real estate value with the central question being: How can the sector arrive at an objective assessment of the difference in value between real estate that is or is not sustainable? Moderated by Prof. Annemieke Roobeek (MeetingMoreMinds and Refill), Mark Hesselink (OVG), Herman van den Berg (DTZ Zadelhoff), Farid Azarkan (Dutch Government Buildings Agency), Ad van Wijk (Delft University of Technology) and Jan Karel Mak (Deerns) discussed this topic. Sustainability necessary Prof. Roobeek noted in her opening remarks that sustainability is, in any case, no longer something nice, but a necessity. The question is, however, how to reward making real estate sustainable, she posed. Because it has to have value. To that end, new business models have to be developed. In those models, the time factor the long term will play an important role. Panel members Farid Azarkan of the Dutch Government Buildings Agency, Herman van den Berg of DTZ Zadelhoff, Mark Hesselink of OVG, Jan Karel Mak of Deerns and Ad van Wijk of the Delft University of Technology agreed with Prof. Roobeek that although the real estate market is moaning and groaning, there were some rays of hope. Certain segments are showing movement again and the number of transactions is increasing, opined Mr Hesselink. And Mr Van den Berg was of the opinion that sustainability is inspiring: We have to develop feasible models to that end and make a distinction for existing stock. Distinctive and attractive It could be concluded from all the discussions that precisely defining the added value of buildings that have been made sustainable turns out to be rather difficult as such new models are being developed. Nevertheless, the panel members and the audience in the room endorsed the idea that making real estate sustainable most certainly generates added value. It makes buildings distinctive and this is attractive to lessees, because they can use them to make a distinctive profile for themselves, mentioned Mr Mak as an example. Mr Van Wijk noted that if the energy costs in a building are lowered significantly, there is room for a somewhat higher rent to be charged. That makes it attractive to investors. Sustainable real estate can result in an increase in value of up to 5%

11 Effective CSR policy based on cooperation in the chain People need to eat in the company restaurant, computers are needed, staff members drive in leased cars and offline communication is printed. How do the Deerns suppliers approach their work? And what are their sustainable and civic convictions? According to Deerns, these are essential elements in entering into a business relationship. An eye for both man and animal The international catering company Sodexo can readily agree on this human vision. And from its own field of work, the caterer also involves animals in its sustainability policy. Corporate Quality Manager Joke van Buuren explains: In 2014 our global assortment of fish may only consist of sustainable fish. In that regard, we have already achieved this goal here in the Netherlands. What s more, we are the only caterer in this country that can boast of all its locations being MSC certified. That means that our fish can be traced all the way back to the fishery. In our vision, food must become a standard part of CSR policy. There is a lot of progress to be made in that field, and that also applies to us. That is why, for instance, we are intensely preoccupied with increasing our range of animal-friendly products. Organic ink and quitting smoking The 100% CO 2 -neutral printer Opmeer does not focus on packaging, but it does have the same goal. We re looking for sustainable borders, relates Director Boy Opmeer (r). For all our productions, we use organic ink with linseed oil, extracted from coleseed. Cultivating and processing it costs energy, of course, but in contrast with the mineral oils from petroleum it can always be replanted. By doing so, we also create jobs in a part of the world where the unemployment figures are relatively high. People are as important as the environment. That s why we work with responsible materials for our people, such as systems to prevent lifting too often. And if one of our employees wants to quit smoking, we pay for his or her course fees. Green border and bamboo pulp Deerns suppliers are aware of this and they themselves place demands on their business relations. Herbert Small, Enterprise Field Marketing Manager of Dell reveals, for instance, that Michael Dell wanted to create the greenest IT company in the world, but could not march toward that goal all by himself. A business is dependent upon partners in the chain. Joining forces with like-minded actors is crucial for making the chain process more efficient and more effective. That determines the green border for a business. That dependency is positive, because as a result businesses drive each other toward coming up with innovations. For instance, we currently use bamboo pulp instead of environmentally-unfriendly styrofoam in packaging. Bicycle of car provider Deerns car provider, Driessen Autolease (part of the Dutch concern Driessen Autogroep), is busy increasing its range of sustainable solutions and applications. Director Ron Beukers knows that cars and environmental friendliness are a challenging combination. Yet we offer the customer as many sustainable options as possible. We provide the entire spectrum in environmentally-friendly cars: electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. And when our customers come for a service or repair, they can opt for a traditional or electric bicycle as alternative transport. Thanks to our efforts in sustainability, we are now the proud owner of the Approved Sustainability certificate issued by the industry organisation BOVAG.

12 Sustainable transformation Sustainability alliances The Green Cause The Groene Zaak [Green Cause] strives to accelerate the process of making the economy and the entrepreneurial climate in the Netherlands sustainable. It is the only cross-sectoral representative body for corporate sustainability in the Netherlands. Deerns is a founding partner of The Green Cause. Electric together The Platform Samen Elektrisch [Electric together] was founded for and by organisations that purchase and use electric vehicles. Together they wield more power when heading into negotiations and lobbying; they want to use that power to accelerate and improve the introduction of electric mobility. The organisations share their knowledge and obtain competitive prices and quick delivery. Since December 2011, Deerns has been using the first electric vehicles. Dutch Green Building Council The Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) is an independent non-profit organisation that strives to make the built environment in the Netherlands sustainable. Deerns is a founding partner and co-developer of BREEAM-NL, an assessment method for determining the sustainability performance of buildings. Deerns is also a member of its American counterpart, the US Green Building Council (USGBC). Green Driver Challenge The Greendriver Challenge is a unique driving style competition which allows organisations to make their fleet of vehicles more sustainable and simultaneously realise attractive fuel savings. Deerns is participating in this competition for the third consecutive year. Duurzaamgebouwd.nl Everyone in the Netherlands wants to build sustainably, but what is the fact and fable thereof? In order to help all parties involved get started, OVG Projectontwikkeling has taken the initiative, together with a group of Dutch experts, to set up a digital knowledge platform for this topic: Deerns is a partner of this digital platform. Stichting Refill Refill is a network of prominent, innovative, major and smaller businesses that equip vacant office buildings in knowledge cities with sustainable, multi-functional arrangements. Deerns is an active partner of this organisation.

13 CO 2 Performance Ladder The CO 2 Performance Ladder is an instrument to stimu late businesses that participate in tenders to consciously be CO 2 -aware in their own business operations and in the execution of projects. In 2011 Deerns was certified level four (whereby five is the highest level). Waste Transformers The Waste Transformers foundation endeavours to convert waste into energy in a decentralised manner. In order to achieve this, Waste Transformers work together with other levels of government, engineering firms, universities, the business community, and both private and institutional investors. Since 2012 Deerns has been a partner of Waste Transformers. Orange Goes Green OrangeGoesGreen (OGG) is a public-private partnership for the purpose of strengthening economic relations, promotional activities and the exchange of knowledge between Dutch and North American government organisations, knowledge institutes and the business community in the field of sustainability and green energy. Climate Neutral Group The Climate Neutral Group is a social venture with a corporate objective: realising a 100% climate-neutral world! Via this organisation Deerns compensates all CO 2 emissions caused by air travel kilometres.
